I have literally never owned a fish in my life, and I've now watched 10 of your videos this morning. You are so funny! I have been considering a freshwater aquarium, and your passion for your "wet friends" has increased my interest and excitement!
If youre ever wanting to go to the saltwater side of things (like me after having freshwater planted aquariums for 4 years), you should totally check out saltwater macro algae aquariums. I am about to set up a 40 gallon macro algae aquarium and they are a lot easier to keep than corals!
A good list, tangs always seem a bit intimidating to me, with only a RS170, I understand BRS saying get utility fish but at the same time I want fish I’ll enjoy keeping and not let go out of lack of interest. This is why I love your content and suggestions because you offer the good advice with the extra aspect of go with your heart!
My list 1: Angelfish - Amazing colours, brings a specific thing to the tank, lots of personality, did i mention colours? 2: Clownfish - Cool way of swimming, lives in a kind of jellyfish (i know anemones arent actually jellyfish, but it sounds cool) 3: Blennies - Lives in holes, lots of different colours and cool personality 4: Hawkfish (specifically Flame/Scarlet) - Speeds around the tank, looks like a bandit, red which is a rare colour 5: Tangs - so many colours and body shapes, cruise around the tank all day, hardly ever hide and always come to see you when you come close to the tank 6: Wrasses - Super active and cool movement, patrols the tank all day and eats various pests, goes into the sand when it goes dark, which is awesome 7: (honourable mention) this one isnt a fish, it is a Boxer Shrimp - Because he is awesome. Enough said.
I've raised one Regal and several Atlantic butterflies from juveniles. I actually catch Spotfin's and Four Eyes on the south shore of Long Island, NY. I have found that each of them has gone through phases where they picked on certain things. At some point in their lives they have all taken a liking to flower anemones and the tiny Four eye that I currently have still likes the flavor of Rhodactus. Evidently they are quite spicy tasting, as he shivers every time he takes a bite. Cheers, Chris
Can't argue with those picks. Copper and butterfly and Regal Angel fish are truly stunning. I hope one day I manage to have both of those fish in a reef aquarium. 🙂👍
I don't have them anymore - It's biologically impossible for them to eat anything else I'm afraid so you have to move them on or they'll starve to death
Awesome list - and very close to my plans. I'm building my tank entirely around a copperband and regal angel. Copperband was the first fish in - zero competition for food and able to get comfortable. He now bats green chromis out the way at the feeding tube... Amazed you've not had issues with regal and zoas/acans. I wasn't planning any fleshy corals like that entirely due to their reputation...
I have a dwarf hawk fish and I love it but he is just the meanest fish I’ve ever owned. Mind you it’s only to a select few fish(fairy wrasse, royal grama and fire fish)
Is your white tail kole tang a bully like mine?? I have a 120 gallon and my tang doesn’t mind my yellow tang but he has a vendetta towards my copperband
Awesome video Alex 100% agree on the regal angel my 4000l system was designed so I could house a pair off them they are my favourite fish by a country mile and if it came to it and could only have these then so be it 😀
Hi, how is your regal angel with your corals? I’d love one but worried may nip. I’ve got a reefer 350, do you think the tank would be big enough? Thanks Stephen
Great video and list Alex - shame the Royal Gramma didn’t make the cut - IMO the ideal reef aquarium fish given colouration, temperament, size and ease of care
Our LFS just sold us a very young one spot foxface for our 3ft x 2ft tank (DD900 reefpro) they claim it will be fine in there long term but.... what are your thoughts and if it needs moving on how fast do they grow? Live aquaria suggest 70g for it and we have 65g, they say the same for tomini tangs but i understand tangs need more room as they are more active, we want to do the right thing by the fish of course Thanks
How do you always manage to keep algae off of the front glass of your tanks?? I struggle with that very much still. Love the footage of the tank. Made me realize mine needd more color
@Reef Dork youve got a hell of a lot of patience man. I've been slipping up on my tank for a while. I'm trying to get back in the swing of things though!
I just lost a double saddled and Auriga I think due to sickness, and maybe not eating enough? I absolutely love butterflyfish I still have my collare and raccoon but losing two fish out of 4 made me cry so hard, it’s super hard to lose a fish especially a 1 inch baby Auriga and double saddled :(
i know this comment isnt relevant for this video, but by any chance are you going to do a video on RODI systems? Im completely lost about install and possible good places to get one and what to look for!
I've thought about it but there's no point unless I get a brand new one and show the install process. Might happen in the future but it's not on the list...
Sounds like you have lots of time and patience to get them onto frozen food however myself away at work I don’t have that luxury. Clowns and damsels for me 😅
Saltwater tanks are beautiful..but what I find as a roadblock is how pricy it is to first get the supplies, then buy coral/inverts/fish, not to mention how the maintenance for a saltwater tank.
Why no talk about the long nose butterfly on the thumb nail? Just got one and it’s just sitting in my sump until I can pull out my purple tang to reduce the stress. Also worried that he might eat my soft corals and LPSs.
Your copperband looks skinny. Why you dont feed scallops? I use carlic press to squeeze scallops and freezing again. Then Put food inside the net with an elastic band on something heavy in aquarium? Otherwise beautiful fish🐟
My List would be very different but I guess that shows how many great fish we can get in this hobby: 6. Coris Gaimard 5. Mag. Foxface 4. Engineer Goby 3. Blue Mandarin 2. C. Naokoae 1. Banded snake eel (see profile pic)
0:03: - Scopus is my favorite fish! very calm and friendly to other fish up to the point of swimming side by side. Mine always consume all the uneaten food at the bottom. I will buy it a pair if I know its gender, I just hope its not LGBTQ++

Can't believe the Copperband is 2 years old... feels like a couple of weeks when you added it

Blennies rule 👊
1 fish not many know about is the shoulder tang… Now that fish is a beauty

I love your channel! I've been hesitant many times over whether it's more fish or more coral
My two bar rabbit is an absolute pig. We love Judy
Nice collection. I've had a few of those guys. RIP Falco my flame hawk who sailed away 2 weeks ago. Definitely my favorite with the most personality.
Nice list of fish. Hawkfish can have some interesting personalities!
Oh, a Dork'n Good friday video!
do you feed your harlequin shrimp starfish to eat? Do you find it will eat anything else?
I don't have them anymore - It's biologically impossible for them to eat anything else I'm afraid so you have to move them on or they'll starve to death
Very beautiful tank awesome list of cool 😎 fishes thnxs for sharing

My Copperband Butterflyfish and Regal Angelfish are usually the two going straight to the top of the tank anytime they see a glimpse of a person
I gladly give up tangs for fairies and flashers - I thought the whitetail would have been peaceful. Definitely need to get a longnose hawke.
I love your channel man… Building my aquarium around your suggestions.. 250gallon!
Great choices. The one of yours I would have included in the list is the Iridis wrasse.
wow that cbb looks so cool lol, like a little alien; I love saltwater fish
Congratulations on 50K subs
I have a dwarf hawk fish and I love it but he is just the meanest fish I’ve ever owned. Mind you it’s only to a select few fish(fairy wrasse, royal grama and fire fish)
And I just realized it’s the falco variety that you did say was feisty
Is your white tail kole tang a bully like mine?? I have a 120 gallon and my tang doesn’t mind my yellow tang but he has a vendetta towards my copperband
No, only with the flasher wrasses
How is your regal angelfish? I’m currently looking to add one but worry to eat my corals 🤦🏼♂️. Thanks in advance
So far, so good - hasn't touched anything yet...
Awesome video Alex 100% agree on the regal angel my 4000l system was designed so I could house a pair off them they are my favourite fish by a country mile and if it came to it and could only have these then so be it 😀

Fine so far but it's still early days. I'd be OK with it in that tank...
@@ReefDork nice one, thanks, planning as the centre piece of the tank.
Great vid. I managed to keep my purple and copperband. I found mashing mysis into reef mastic got the CB eating in a week
Nice list of fish Alex. My CBB will only eat clams which I buy at the market but he decimated my aiptasia which was great. 👌
White Tail Kole Tang, kinda sounds like a 70s southern rock band. 😂
😂
Can i run a 15 inch cube saltwater aquarium with HOB filter??
Yep, absolutely. I run a 12 inch cube (approx) with no filtration...
what's the name of the jellyfish lamp you have in the background of your videos?
Just a generic one from Amazon - there are various different brands at different prices but they're all the same!
thanks man!@@ReefDork
Great video and list Alex - shame the Royal Gramma didn’t make the cut - IMO the ideal reef aquarium fish given colouration, temperament, size and ease of care

He'll be fine size wise for at least the medium term. I have one in a 150 litre tank...
Thanks, i guess behaviour will change if he is not happy
Very informative video, thank you 🙏
Do you have any recommendations for beginner videos for freshwater aquariums?
Haven't kept freshies for years I'm afraid
flame hawk and long nose hawk fine together???
😎 for 4 years no less!
@@ReefDork Brilliant - is all the confidence I need too add a long nose to my tank :)
How do you always manage to keep algae off of the front glass of your tanks?? I struggle with that very much still. Love the footage of the tank. Made me realize mine needd more color
I clean it twice a week and almost always before filling but if you look closely you'll see patches in the corners that don't scrape clean!
@Reef Dork youve got a hell of a lot of patience man. I've been slipping up on my tank for a while. I'm trying to get back in the swing of things though!
Is that a super rare tunze algea magnet glass cleaner fish sitting on the bottom?
Thanks for the great content, as always!
my ornate leopard wrasse eats flakes from day 1 😇 such a beautiful fish

@@ReefDork No worries, i thought that might be the case! Do you have any recommendations on brands or place to look at all?
Sounds like you have lots of time and patience to get them onto frozen food however myself away at work I don’t have that luxury. Clowns and damsels for me 😅
my only experience with a scarlet hawkfish was of it immediately eating a cleaner shrimp within a few hours of me putting the shrimp in the tank
No aggression issues with the hawkfish?
The Falco is a bit of a dick sometimes, but nothing really. The other two are gentlemen!
My Falco would catch my gobies and swim around with them. My nightmare fish.
How many gallons is your aquarium?
110ish
I see that you have the rock with algae . Wowwww!..it's normal?
Saltwater tanks are beautiful..but what I find as a roadblock is how pricy it is to first get the supplies, then buy coral/inverts/fish, not to mention how the maintenance for a saltwater tank.
What do you actually do for a living?
I work in dispute resolution
I want a couple harlequin and couple cleaners
Why no talk about the long nose butterfly on the thumb nail? Just got one and it’s just sitting in my sump until I can pull out my purple tang to reduce the stress. Also worried that he might eat my soft corals and LPSs.
Found this a little broad, maybe make it a little more specific on what purpose the fish should have. Otherwise, great video!
My long nose eating every shrimp I put in tank 😢 like peppermint shrimp now I have aptesia again 😅
I find saltwater fish are case by case you can get two of the same fish one be amazing and the other a holy hell
Just had to get rid of my 2 clown fish because they were knocking 10 bells of crappie out of my flame angel.
Your copperband looks skinny. Why you dont feed scallops? I use carlic press to squeeze scallops and freezing again. Then Put food inside the net with an elastic band on something heavy in aquarium? Otherwise beautiful fish🐟

That said, I wouldn't put him in a reef tank....

God almighty week of a waiting and only 6 minutes video 😢😢😢😢😢
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤
This is the worst channel I’ve subbed to in a long time. It’s going to cost me a bloody fortune at this rate…
