    I recorded myself reading the outlines for the essay topics that were not MBE topics (i.e. the topics not focused on as much) and listed to it while I slept. I didn't want to devote too much time to those topics and I have always been convinced that the act of writing something over or reading it out loud helps me remember it even if the listening while sleeping doesn't end up doing as much as I think.

    MIND MAPPING has helped me and also doing practice questions. Im not in law school, will never go, im old, but im interested in taking a 4 year degree in law and society program and becoming a legal assistant maybe, SO im trying to get a head start by learning as much about law as I possibly can. Im scared to learn because I suffered Educational Trauma from when I was a child, and I'm strictly a Visual Arts major, but the law helps me to balance the extreme amount of creativity that I have in my brain. I am also studying math too. I need to use the left side of my brain. I've been doing art for 20 years and got lost in math in grade 4.
    Educational Trauma:
    experiences can impact , behavior and relationships at school. Recent neurobiological, epigenetics, and psychological studies have shown that experiences in childhood can diminish concentration, memory, and the organizational and language abilities children need to succeed in school .

      I know the feeling! It's not so much that you don't know the material or haven't memorized it. There are other factors that affect your memory on an exam. For example, stress and fear of failing an exam can affect your memory. So when it comes to improving your memory, you have to use good methods and develop the right mindset.
      One good method, as I discussed in the video, is to use memory enhancing techniques, such as the loci. you must keep in mind the 4 memory principles: RAVE = Repetition, Association, Visualization, Exaggeration. If you use a memory technique that incorporates these principles, you're golden!
      I'll definitely post more videos on this topic. But you can also check out a FREE 7-Day Bar Prep Mindset Checklist and Audio Training here: www.barprepmindset.com. The module 3 the full training discusses these memory principles and some effective techniques to memorize rules.

    Hi Leila, Thank you for making this very insightful video. I have a question for you. After reading the course and cases, I believe I have a good understanding of the material. However, I don't know what to focus my memorization on; I always feel like I should recall as much information as possible to make sure they are in my memory after I made sense of them by taking (A LOT OF) notes and reorganizing them. Also, as I tend to worry I will not be able to express them as well as the book does, I tend to fall into the verbatim reciting of these notes. Recalling a lot information in a very similar way the book presented them is very time-consuming. My question: what should I focus my memorization on? Only the outline, key concept names and key words and simply read the rest? Also, do you believe rereading to be a good strategy if coupled with other learning strategies for the sake of saving time? Many thanks for your help :)

    • @LawwithLeila
      @LawwithLeila  6 лет назад +3

      Hey there, I'm glad you found the video insightful.
      Now to answer your question, all the problems that you addressed are common problems, or rather challenges, when it comes to memorizing anything. In order for the information to go from short term memory to long term memory you have to understand a few key memory principles: RAVE, which stands for Repetition, Association, Visualization, and Exaggeration.
      Repetition helps you to remember. So, rereading something and repeating it over and over will enhance your memorization. However, you have to engage in spaced repetition, which means just rereading your outline 100 times the day before your exam will not be as effective as spreading it out over a period of time, say, reread at least once every week, or 10-20 minutes every day.
      Next, when you associate the thing you want to learn to something you already know, something that's already in your long term memory, you memorize it faster and easier. For example, if you want to learn someone's name, you can link it to someone you know with the same name.
      Visualization is a memory principle that's very important-When you turn abstract info into visual imagery, you can memorize it better. Let's say you want to remember a person with a last name Baker. If you visualize that person BAKING a pie and imagine it very vividly, you'll be able to recall that name in the future. Because all you have to do is remember the image.
      And last, information that is exaggerated tends to stick whereas things that doesn't necessarily stand out fade quickly or don't really make into long term memory. With our previous example, if you picture the person baking nude, or baking the biggest pie you've ever seen, the more likely it'll be for you to recall that information in the future. The more exaggerated and out of the norm you make the images, the better.
      So, if you keep in mind all these principles when you're trying to memorize anything, you'll improve your memory.
      Outlining, rewriting your notes, condensing your outlines, making flashcards, using mnemonics...all these are great ways that use the memory principles to help you memorize faster and easier.
      Outlining is an organization tool that will help you condense the information that you need to know into linear, easy to digest format that'll help you to use the memory principles in a more meaningful way.
      Hope this helps. Now let me ask you, are you in law school? If so, what year are you in?

    • @Etienne-oq6we
      @Etienne-oq6we 6 лет назад +1

      Hi Leila, thank you for taking the time to give me this detailed explanation. The RAVE principles are definitely something I will keep in mind moving forward. If I understood well, the steps consist of reading, taking notes, outlining and condensing these notes and then using the RAVE principles to memorize and move this info into long-term memory. Is that correct?
      I am at business school, but, as part of my curriculum, I was required to take several law classes where I was confronted with several challenges of a law student. For instance, after reading a course, I had understood what I read, but when it came to repeating the details of the reasoning or the case, I noticed I was often unable to do so, most of the time because I am lacking the vocabulary, English not being my native language. I have very good understanding skills, but recalling is often a bit more challenging to me. It is not because I remember an idea that I will necessarily be able to articulate it clearly and precisely. Hence, why I tend to fall into the trap of verbatim reciting.
      A million thanks for all these helpful tips, Leila. I can't wait to try them out.

    • @LawwithLeila
      @LawwithLeila  6 лет назад +2

      That's correct! But keep in mind that if you activate your imagination and keep RAVE in mind, while you're reading, taking notes, outlining, condensing your outlines, you'll enhance your memory. For example, after you read a page of your book you can take a few minutes to visualize the information you just read and repeat the story and add some exaggeration. You can make your notes more memorable by adding colors and pictures. You can use RAVE when condensing your outlines by using mind maps and making the maps colorful and visually memorable. And then once you have your condensed outline closer to exam day, you can then work on memorizing it using memory techniques (such as the loci, mnemonics) that utilize the memory principles.
      For example, if you want to memorize defenses to Contract Formation, you can use the mnemonic "SAD FILM: Statute of frauds, Adhesion k, Duress, Frustration of purpose, Impossibility, Lack of capacity (illegality), Mistake of fact and law" and utilize the memory principles to make it stick. Perhaps imagine a scenario where you're trying to convince someone you know to get into an agreement with you (maybe marry you) and as you're begging them, that person is sobbing and screaming while looking at a very sad film. Then repeat this scenario, visualize it, and add some exaggeration. Obviously this is just an example. If you come up with your own story/images it's a lot more effective. And the more exaggerated and out-of-the-norm the better.
      I was also a Business major in undergrad. I took a few business law courses and ended up liking it so much that I decided to go to law school. It was also very challenging for me, especially in the beginning. But being challenged means you're simply going out of your comfort zone. With enough practice, you can master any skill. Keep up the great work! Let me know if you have any other questions.
