  • Documentary in which a woman, who was adopted out of a Gypsy family after her mother supposedly left her in a burning caravan when she was a baby, tries to uncover the truth about her past.
    Annie has grown up believing that her severe facial scarring is the result of her Irish Traveller mother trying to kill her by setting fire to the caravan in which Annie was sleeping. Could she have been driven by a fear of being ostracised by the community, having had an affair and given birth to a mixed-race baby?
    Annie was adopted, and 30 years later, she wants to investigate her past. Armed with just a few names and dates from the original social services documents concerning her adoption, Annie is determined to find people who know the truth of what happened that night in 1986.
    Annie was adopted by a white family. Her adoptive mother taught her there was nothing she couldn't do. But she felt her identity was a 'blur' - part Afro-Caribbean, part Traveller, part white. Annie has had no contact with the Gypsy community and is desperate to understand what it was within the culture that might have caused her birth mother to take such extreme measures. Was it the colour of Annie's skin? That she was the product of an affair? Or both?
    In a meeting with representatives from the Gypsy Council to find out about Gypsy culture, a shocking revelation causes Annie's investigation to change direction. Did her mother really do it? Or was she simply blamed for an accidental caravan fire by her outraged community? Supported by her fiance and her adopted family, Annie won't give up until she tracks down the people who can give her the truth.

She is an absolutely beautiful person inside and out. Her physical beauty is all wonderful, but her soul, is so much more impressive and stunning. @samc2460 3 года назад +2

      @@shemeciahaskell322 if her mom had already had a hard life… I’d imagine that she wouldn’t want her to have an even harder one. She had been burned and she also wasn’t the skin tone that the rest of her family was, she would of most likely been judged and shunned.

    • @BhappyD
      @BhappyD 3 года назад +10

      @@shemeciahaskell322 I don’t believe it was her biological grandmother. From a different video I watched with her (haven’t finished this one yet so not sure if it’s mentioned here or not), it appears that her mother had an affair, as both her mother and her mother’s partner were white, and when she was born she was black, which she said caused some problems for her mother. The person who pulled her out of the fire was her mother’s partner’s mother, so at least from what I gathered she wasn’t related to her biologically, because she wasn’t the biological child of the mother’s husband. There could have been a multitude of different reasons as to why she needed up in foster care instead of with family, but a common reason is simply not having the finances. Living a gypsy lifestyle often isn’t very prosperous or financially stable, and if you haven’t planned to be responsible for raising a child for the rest of that child’s life, having that massive responsibility suddenly thrown on to you can be impossible for some people. Then when you factor in that she wast biologically related, was older (meaning more limited options for income etc), the baby/child having severe burns and needing extensive medical treatment and surgeries as well as emotional care, and that the “grandmother” was recovering from burn injuries herself after saving the baby from the fire, on top of the lifestyle they were already living, it’s likely that it was in the child’s best interest to be placed in foster care and adopted by a loving family who could meet her needs medically, financially, physically and emotionally. She clearly proved her love by sacrificing herself to save the baby from the fire. Her not being able to take in the child doesn’t mean she didn’t love her. In fact, it could be BECAUSE of her selfless love for the child that she knew she couldn’t be the parent the child needed or provide the life the child needed, and selflessly gave the child a chance at finding the family she knew she deserved. And given the incredible person Annie has turned out to be, and the adoptive family who loved and raised her as their own, I’d say the right choices were made.

      You would think a highly discriminated ethnic group wouldn't be racist, but sometimes being discriminated brings out some of the worst behaviors and a strong desire to fit into the larger nationality. And finding that they are barriers to fitting in already culturally, religiously or with different languages, they might not want to add another barrier for their children to have to overcome to fit in by making them darker through intermixing.

      Of course, it doesn't make it right to have prejudices against another HUMAN group because of people discriminating against your own group. I agree with this commenter about every ethnicity all over the world being racist to others different than themselves. There are those in every country that are that way as well as more welcoming people in every ethnic group.

      yeah I thought about that too but maybe they felt terribly guilty or like it was their fault, maybe because of guilt they thought she would be safer with a stable family. Remember caravan fires were common because they use paraffin and open flames as heat sources. They could have been scared to deal with authorities as gypsies are looked down upon and vilified. We will never know but it's possible that the mother and grandmother were in shock and scared so that's why she ended up in state care and adopted. Or maybe the mum did try to burn her baby alive. We will never know.

      How they have described the mother have big similarities with the language in general written by social workers. Who color their reports with believing. Personal opinions and the fact they in general are super racists. The fact the mother never was convicted speaks its own language. It was most likely a very tragic accident. That they never visited was probably because they wasent allowed to. Everything this women have heard is only one side of the story. To forever separate her from them because authorities hates gypsies the mother is labeled the worst they could come up with. Social workers do the devils work. Damaging her identity and integrity only to keep her from her biological origin.

She had every chance to "get rid" of an "unwanted" child. So why kill her when she could've just as easily given her up?? Like I learned from Judge Judy, if it doesnt make sense then it probably isnt true.
