- Twitter employees filmed the moment they joined together in the office to count down to the moment they were fired.
Elon Musk gave staff an ultimatum to either "go hardcore" or go home, giving them until Thursday (17 November) to decide.
"We're all about to get fired from Twitter ... I've been here for nine years and nine months now," Matt Miller says as he stands with his coworkers.
The Tweeps cheered together as they counted down to zero, before they went to check if their badges had already been deactivated.

This may shock you but many tech and social media companies work at a loss or at low profit margins at the prospect of future monetization or sale of the company such as amazon who really only has one major profit generator being AWS with most other of amazons services working at a deficit being funded by AWS. Considering the work these guys put in over the years allowed the company to sell for a whopping 44 billion dollars deserves praise if anythiing whether you think it was worth that price or not.

🙈 guys it pains me to see people believe you can reduce the staff that much and not tank your company. Yes of course Twitter runs as he didn’t demolish the servers, but there is no staff to fix bugs, no staff to implement new features, no staff for content moderation, nobody with talent is going to work for him and advertisers are pulling out fast. It’s going to get ugly really fast.

Being laid off is different than being fired. But that wouldn't sound as dramatic in their Twitter posts.
"You're fired, you're being laid off, we letting you go" different way to say the same thing. If you give an ultimatum, technically you're not fired... But you are. If you refuse to do what I want, I will get rid of you.
@@Kryssthealien contractually a termination aka firing, and a layoff ARE different. It's not just semantics. Was there was an ultimatum? I got an "ultimatum" to get the vax to keep my job. What was the threat?
While the connotations of being laid off and being terminated are quite a bit different, for most California employees , there is NO real LEGAL difference, 😅unless for subordination. California is an at-will employment state. (Hope this help).

I ran some numbers today on the count of former employees x $175K/yr. It totaled roughly $750M.

I'm in surfers paradise Australia. Some years ago, South Australia had rolling black outs over summer. Elon Musk said he could build infrastructure to address this, and there would be no more black outs. He achieved the stated goal, in the time frame he outlined. South Australia does NOT have rolling black outs over summer anymore.

I'm a software engineer - the level of incompetence he's showing with this kind of stunt demonstrates that anyone who knows his history was already aware of: he has absolutely no technical knowledge, he's a garbage programmer and an even worse leader.
He's not even aware of the concept of a "Death March", which is what asking people to work 18-hour-days, 7-days-a-week is. When you do that in software engineer, after a month you've six months behind, after two months you're a year behind, and at your deadline date you've often got literally nothing to show for it whilst code rot has taken root in the rest of your system.
Only the most incompetent engineers will agree to stay on and work under these conditions.
Oh, and none of these people were fired - the deadline passed. Elon Musk is an idiot and his threat to let people go was bullshit, and reports are that 75% of his employees chose to ignore his ultimatum. He literally cannot fire them - that would bring twitter down to barely 25% of its original staff, and they were already critically underfunded.

I have been laid off multiple times and I always have to think hardly to come up with a good leave reason for a new interview. Those guys won’t get their next job. This act make them look like to recruiters that they are fckin entitled and ungrateful. Reality will hit them hard down the road

I don't think these guys are going to have a problem "earning a living". They have highly valued skills. They don't need an employer. They will easily be able to freelance etc. Elon Musk needs them a lot more than they need him. They know they will likely be fine going forward.
People seem to forget that there are hundreds of ancillary tech companies in Silicon Valley supplying qualified staff at short notice, and they're paid far more for it. Musk is so dumb he's not only lost 80% of his skilled and dedicated workforce, he's now going to be paying contract workers triple for doing the same job, and some of them will be the same people he's just lost lol
There is no shortage of jobs for skilled engineers and tech industry professionals in Silicone Valley, 99% of these people are going to be headhunted by the companies Musk is now going to have to rely on just to keep the servers running.

Elon Musk doesn't understand that they aren't like operators on a line at Tesla who can be trained and working to a reasonable level of competence in a few days. I've worked in car manufacturing plants and I know how quickly you can be replaced if you walk out. But without the techs that maintain and repair the infrastructure, you are pretty much sunk. I can't imagine companies will be happy paying for adverts on a site that could collapse at any point. I doubt Twitter will disappear, but the way it's going, it's only a matter of time before something else rises up and ears it's lunch, dinner and breakfast.
