Well, you've done it again with another lovely atmospheric video that propels me towards book stores in search of your recommendations. I didn't know before I watched this that I must read Japanese women writers. Now I do. Thank you very much.
seeing this late tonight, I was transported again to the shores of the Island of Sherdstube, that unique place where story and place and haunting music come together in a most beautifully dissociative way. There is no other place online that truly allows what philosopher Byung-chul Han would call the art of lingering to be practised. Thank you again Sam.
Love this! By the way, i just found your Podcast and was wondering why it ended so early, will it continue in the future? Really enjoy your opinions, you are one of the most passionate voices on literature out there!
Ah very pleased to hear that. Actually, much of the music in my videos - with some exceptions where I sample/manipulate other things - is written and recorded by me. Very happy you enjoy it - it's one of the most fun parts of making the videos for me.
I always love a good bookshelf backdrop. Though I'd kill for one more level of quality settings, there are some gems indeed in that Danielewski to Isis frustum.
MY GOD ! I have just started Watching the video …and it’s going to take a long time to finish …I will finish it in two or three sittings …but I am hooked right from the start ! The visuals …the setting …your beautiful country…and your engaging insightful words …everything is so captivating! Congratulations on making such a long video on the women writers of Japan ..I am very intrigued and excited to watch this . All my best wishes and love ( I will comment here again after finishing the video piece )
Hi Priyanka! Ah, you're so kind! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch it - I know it's a big time commitment. I hope there's some nourishment in it for you. :)
Just this morning, I was thinking it seemed time for a new sherd to drop! I've been drawn to Japanese women writers over the past few years, and Mieko Kawakami has become one of my favorite writers. I highly recommend her powerful novella Heaven. Been meaning to read Izumi Suzuki for a while now. Excited to check out the authors you mentioned. I wonder if you've read or are familiar with the novel Out by Natsuo Kirino. It is a feminist noir crime/horror novel that goes about as dark as a novel can go. Unlike any other story I've encountered. Really one to check out when you're in the mood for a twisted, intense Japanese crime novel. Thanks for these meditations!
I actually picked up 'Heaven', too, and almost covered it in this video, but changed my mind at the last moment. Of the five, Fumiko Enchi was probably my favourite. I can't wait to read more of her work. I know of 'Out', but I haven't read it yet, I'm afraid. Speaking of crime novels, I also picked up the two 'Lady Joker' books by Kaoru Takamura. Have you come across those, by any chance? Really glad you enjoyed the video! :)
@@SherdsTube I've not come across the Lady Joker novels by Takamura. Working as a bookseller, I've just had them put on order to add to the store shelves and am eager to check them out. I've been amassing Japanese crime novels by Masaka Togawa, Yukito Ayatsuji, Soji Shimada, and Seishi Yokomizo for my personal collection. I sense a crime spree in my future...that being of the Japanese fictional variety, just to be clear.
Come on, Sherds! Do us another video. It's wet as a duck's arse in Blighty and my spirits are damp. Make it about spooky, spectral stuff-- you do that well!
Haha oh go on, then. 😊 Seriously, though - it's weird you should say that, as I was thinking about doing something a bit ghostly soon. Also, this comment is the most English thing I've read in a while! 🤣

Thanks so much! Haha, I've got to stop doing that ;)

Some more quality stuff
Have you try to tackle the two big Monogatari?
Not yet! They're both waiting patiently on the bookshelf. ;)
@@SherdsTube I am also waiting for them to call to me.
Do you have any plan to read the 6 Chinese classic?
Not at the moment, but perhaps at a moment of greater stamina! ;)
