Great video David. I liked the individual sonic attributes ranking. I've had this on the back burner for a while and just sitting down with a few different copies today.

I purchased the Rhino Cars lp direct from Rhino, but they’re not emailing me new release notifications. I didn’t know they are up to three now. Busy with life and work. Thanks for the video!

using your numbering system, adding them up and dividing by 6 the Rhino gets 10.3 SC and Nautilus tie at 8.33333. Good video, I like that you called Kevin Gray!

Rhino pressings are almost always a cut above. Even going decades back. I have lots of Rhino lp and cds. When I see that word Rhino, I know chances are I'm going to get sound quality above the norm. Maybe the best recording I have on cd that was not recorded as an audiophile release, but re-released, is Chicago's first Christmas album (snowy trees cover). Besides being one of the best Xmas recordings ever, it also has A+ sound, and the Rhino version includes many extra tracks that you would not want to miss. My go to over the years on The Captain & Me has been the Mofi gold cd. A home run. This is one of the best rock albums ever. The songs are great and there's so much interesting detail, that it boggles the mind. Try playing it once through headphones. A very important album to me. Great video!

Thanks! I agree about the majority of Rhino releases. They often employ great mastering engineers like Kevin Gray. And while this one didn't win, we are talking about tapes 50 years + for reproduction.

You are right about the bass being held back on the Nautilus. I compared Long Train Running & China Grove to the same 2 tracks on their Greatest Hits album. Definitely more prominent bass on the Greatest Hits. I think what Nautilus was doing was cutting down the bass level to make the grooves wider, to get cleaner more dynamic sound. The acoustic guitars on Long Train Running really ring out clean as chimes. The slight brightness really brings that out vividly. The Captain & Me were one of the first half speed master lps to be reviewed in a major publication (High Fidelity Magazine). It got a very favorable review. Everyone takes for granted that Mobile Fidelity was the first re-release label to use half speed mastering from master tapes.of popular music. I am not sure that is so. .I know CBS Mastersound came a little
later. The London Blueback CS 6000 series of classical lps, which came out in the 1950s into the 1960s were half speed mastered originals. Half speed mastering goes way further back than Mofi & Nautilus. You can read about that in The Guide To London Blueback Lps by Robert Moon. It is hard to find this guide on the used market.

Thanks for the feedback and I’m glad it’s helpful because obviously it takes a bit more time to do and produce the video. Adding the spectrographs was a new touch and flipping back and forth to see relative differences is an enhancement I can do now that I have a good analog-to-digital converter.

As always thank you for a terrific review. Really don't think two different copies of an album can be called a shootout. Having at least three does. I was glad you did include the Nautilus really because that could constitute three versions. Also I has been know to sound pretty good. I had asked you if you were going to include it some while back and I think you were not going to. To my surprise today you did. I thought that was fair to do so. Contacting Kevin Gray was just icing on the cake. Smart move with the inside scoop on his past and present involvement. Keep it coming! Thanks!

I guess I'll just keep my speakers corner record sounds like the one to have and like I always say.
just like you said on the video it's all about what are you comparing it to.

The intresting thing is, everyone's room and equipment is different. One might prefer a different pressing with their room/equipment. I know I sound like a broken record, but the room is the most important part of the audio chain and the least addressed.

Brilliant shootout, thanx. I have the Speakers Corner and i think i don't need another one. The Rhino's High Fidelity are to expensive for a German Customer because we must buy in the US although they were pressed in Germany by Optimal. I buyed the Cars and this was the first and the last from Rhino High Fidelity. It's sheer madness that the LPs are pressed in Germany and then transported to the USA and then sent back to a European buyer. I don't support this just so Rhino can give a coat of paint for exclusive items. The normal Rhino items you can buy everywhere. That's a shitty business policy and a rip-off of the consumer. Sorry for the harsh words, but it really pisses me off. Greetings from🇩🇪, ❤your channel.

We have the same problem in Canada, as Walmart and Target records are pressed in Canada. Yet we have no access to them, Walmart Canada doesn't carry records and Target is nonexistent here. If I want them I have to order from the US and it now becomes big money with shipping, taxes, Customs fees, but yet the records are made in Canada....go figure...🙄

I live in Ireland. Totally agree with you. Its crazy also that normal reissues pressed in Germany or the Czech Republic are then about 16 to 20 dollars more expensive in equivalent currency when sold in Europe. Its a mad rip off.

I hope the next Hifi series rock release is a record I can’t find in every dollar bin in every record store. Something a bit more deserving of an audiophile treatment. 2 disappointments in a row. Not sure what their criteria is for choosing which albums to do. 🤷‍♂️ Desirability certainly doesn’t seem to be considered

    • @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion

Availability of tapes is a biggie along with Artist permission. They look at sales numbers as well and think they will sell. The Cars certainly sold out fast, but it was needing a strong treatment as the MOFI was pretty poor.

David thank you for taking the time to do this shoot out. I like the grading system that you use and comparing those results side by side illustrates how you came to the conclusions that you did. Thank you.
Rhino still needs to find a sturdier mailer than the one that you received your record in. I received The Captain And Me in the same mailer that you did and my record sustained damage to one corner of the record jacket from what looked to be a minor bump to the shipping mailer. That shipping mailer is NOT sturdy enough to protect against corner damage to the record jackets! The two corners of the shipping mailer that are on side of the mailer that opens are not sturdy enough to protect the record jacket. Those two corners on the “open side” of the mailer expose the weakness of that flimsy mailer and it needs to be upgraded to a sturdier mailer constructed of heavier duty cardboard.

In fairness, I haven’t heard it. From my experience, if Joe Reagoso was the sole mastering engineer, I don’t have much hope for a high quality outcome.
