Here in 2021 I am watching all of the videos on the King Cobra. There is something about this car that none of the new cars can match. The closest that I can think of is a crotch rocket motorcycle.
I'll never get tried of this car or car story.
Wow ! hearing these beautiful cars again gave me goose pimples ! Cobra became my favourite school boy car when i read in Motor Magazine John Bolster's road test , he said it was awesome and I had to agree , although obviously I couldn't drive one , 50 years on I still think the Cobra along side the E type are two of the best looking cars , thank you for posting Ken .
We probably both read the same road test! I read it in 1962 and I think it was of the first Cobra in England, a 289, flat-side body.
I just craved a Cobra after that, and finally built a replica 427 with a pumped-up 302 V8 out of a Fairlane many, many years later putting that on the road in 1992!
I have never forgotten the acceleration numbers of the real 427 which were unheard of back then - 0-60 mph @ 4.2 secs and 0 -100 - 0 (full stop) in 13.8 secs!
Mine was not that quick - but plenty quick enough!
I can beat Quentin's story though! In about 1969 I was driving through Ripon, in Yorkshire in my Lotus Cortina MK1 and in the showroom of Glovers of Ripon was a Cobra 289 - I slammed on the brakes, went in a took a look. It was a one owner, wire-wheeled, white with red interior pristine car for 1300 pounds!
The salesman was ready to take my Lotus Cortina in trade and I could finance the balance at about 14 pounds per month. But the deal did not happen as being an under-25 year old driver, insurance was going to be horrendously costly, if even I could find a company to offer cover!
Talk about a lost opportunity!
