  • Betty and Dan Wilkens have devoted much of the past decade to transforming the gravel pit on their land in Kanabec County, MN, into prairie, wetland, and oak savanna wildlife habitat. Betty walks us through the major steps in the restoration process, the challenges, management, and the obvious benefits to a wide range of pollinators and other wildlife species. Sorry about the delay in replying to your question. This project was done over many years by the landowners, Dan and Betty Wilkens. They partnered with several agencies and there would be individual reports by that agency regarding the seed mixes. Winter seeding was the most successful, with seeds broadcast after November 1. For two years, the new seeding was clipped to keep competing vegetation down while the native seeds had a chance to build roots; on the third year, one clipping was done in late June and after that, maintenance was done by a variety of methods.
