Gretzky wasn't lured by money, if that's what you're suggesting. His rights were owned by the team, and they were traded to another team. Peter Pocklington (the owner, and the bearded guy who spoke first) claimed he needed to trade Wayne Gretzky to clear personal debts from several failed business ventures.
@@ryandebruys2762 That was kind've my point. He was traded to LA against any personal wish of his. To be honest, it was for the best. The Los Angeles lifestyle made him who is today as an elderstatesman of the game. He made people love hockey who otherwise would've never paid for price of entry or pay per view.
Many still blame Mr. Pocklington, but the fact is Wayne said he wanted to play out his option year before committing to anything. This meant Oilers would have risked Wayne walking with no compensation. There's no way they'd let that happen, so the deal was made. Oilers won another Cup without Gretz, and Gretz helped get the Kings to the finals but never was able to win another championship.
