Super73 ZG Controller Upgrade

- This video goes through the procedure for replacing your Super73 ZG’s original controller with a controller that gives you far more options for tuning.
First of all, I am not a professional bike hacker, I just did this to my own ZG, so if you do follow my video, it is at your own risk. Any sparks, shock, smoke or flames were not put there by me.
The parts on this list were correct at the time of publishing, but they tend to be low stock items and the links may change at any point. you just helped me a ton. Both my Z1s don't turn on anymore and i figured i would just do this... i think the battery is still fine as that still lights up. I have a feeling it's the controller. Might as well upgrade the whole thing. If it works, I'll do it for the other bike as well.

@@user-ot1dv6ri4f not right now, fellla.... i could easily run a 48v but a) they are expensive 2) i need two, one on the frame and probably a custom one to go in the seat and iii) running 48v will cut my range considerably (range anxiety is worse than going a bit slower)
but technically, i can connect a 48v directly now, rather than these 2x36v ones

Thanks man... I appreciate your feedback. I would recommend checking out the ZX as well as the ZG though... certainly a lot of the things I would have changed ( i did a video on that) were updated for the ZX. They don't do it in orange though, which is a blocker for me.
@@orange73 I saw that video too 👍 think it all boils down to the price range the difference between the two is quite steep trying to justify €1500 compared to €2500 to my mrs would be hard to do 😂
yeah, thats fair... but do consider that all the mods I have done to fix the niggles I had would ultimately bring you a lot closer to that second figure and not have the other advantages such as alloy frame or all the mod mount holes or the gearing. I think the ZX is genuinely likely to be the better of the 2 bikes, but the ZG is amazing too.
Nice job man, very detailed and explained. I have just bought a ZG (Orange one obviously) few days ago, I am happy with it at the moment but I might do this upgrade a bit later. Thanks again for your video

Really great in-depth video on how to replace a controller. My only critique is that I would have turned the background music down 50% so it wasn't so pronounced at certain points when you are speaking. Really top notch video. I love the color of your bike too.

Mate, i've pulled off two cranks now off ZG's, and boy they were a pain to take off. Seriously you must have loosen it prior to making the video :)

@@orange73 parktool one, some proper cranking needed to shift, struggled on both. Feel weak now watching your video.

Can I put a 48v battery in my ZG with everything else being stock? Or so I need to buy the new controller aswell?
Nope. I don't think so. The default controller is 36v and kinda went a bit mad (with all its 5 LEDs) with my 2 batteries. Part of the reason I switched this out. I now run a 48v battery with this controller, no problems.

i was doing the controller and you have an adapter from the green ended power cables to the black and red power cables i dont have that do you know anyway i can get that or not

@@tommiepow7270 can't say for sure, cos I haven't tried, but watts are power, and power brings speed
I've had a half dozen kits over the last two decades and sometimes o find with both throttle and pedal assist fitted most times the pedal assist feels it has more torque than the throttle, and that's with no torque sensor. 💯🤠🤟🇬🇧 Chesterfield woz ere 👍

I have not upgraded my motor, just the controller and wiring, so yes, the original motor is fine!

This video has helped lot of people. I'm looking at replacing the controller in mine with a throttle but have a couple of questions before I open up the bike - does the standard PAS not work with the new controller? Is the motor extension cable necessary?
The standard PAS is not compatible with the new controller, which is why i say to replace it. New one is cheap and works. The motor extension cable is 100% necessary. The electrons will not jump from the controller to the motor without it.

Maybe, maybe not.. but either way, I think you will regret not paying that little bit extra

I bought my battery with the correct connections. You can chose when you buy.
Hi there! I just bought a Super73 ZG and looking to upgrade it. I saw your video and it’s really helping me out! I just had a question. I don’t want the display like you have but I’d like to keep the PAS controller that comes with the bike. Since it both have the 5 pin green connector could I just plug it in where you have your display? And keep the original that way?
No. It won't work.

@@motlab nope. It is custom Super73 and undocumented. You can get different displays for the kt but they still need you to swap out the pas.

From the user manual:
When the electronic control system of the electric vehicle fails, and the meter will
automatically display (flicker) fault code. You can't exit the fault code display only the
fault is removed.

So it seems like you have the wrong kind of throttle, I think.. where did you get it ?

cheapest part, get another one.
incidentally, the one i fitted is the only part that has failed on my bike so far, and i bought another too.
@@orange73 damn, those throttles are weak. I'll let you know when i get a new one if the issue remains
@@orange73 new throttle fixed the issue. Warning: don't ever plug faulty throttle when bike is powered, my bike went to the wall indoors!
Just stuff those wires in the seat box and it's just like the first version of my orange Z1.
yeah, all the wires i wanted tucked away are tucked away now... how different were your mods?
@@orange73 I'm now 48v with a giant UPP triangle battery on my frame. I didn't/couldn't use the brake cutoff switches as I have aftermarket Shimano hydraulic brakes.

What kind of performance increases can one expect from these tuning capabilities?
well it de-restricts it for a start. The rest depends on other factors, such as 36v or 48v, etc.

You should able to work it out from the items in the video. I can't recommend any sources now, because my sources are no longer valid.
Do you have a link to the crank puller. I think there two types, square and splined?
I don't, sorry. Bought mine in Halfords.

Where did you get the red en black cable to connect your controller to the battery
The controller I purchased already had Anderson powerpole connectors on it, the same as the original battery. This meant I could just plug it in. No extra lead needed.

Can you program this to have walk assist on throttle only and not full speed, or alternatively require both PAS and throttle to go?
If I remember correctly you can have walk assist by pressing and holding the down button on the handle bar controls
@@orange73 thanks, so you could leave on one of the modes throttle off, keep walk assist with down and run pedal assist to 15.5mph if you see were I am going? Just got a ZG but really hating that initial push off, thinking of perhaps a new PAS sensor only or full controller job

@@EboyzLondon doubt you will get 30 miles out of original battery 8ah. I didn't get close to that without throttle. Less with.
Has the top speed of your Super73 changed after this upgrade?
yes, it does about 22 mph now, but i am sure it would be faster for lighter people. The biggest advantage is that it now gives motor from the line rather than from 8mph up...
does the 48v setup also work with the 250watt motor of the ZG
and how does the pedal assist feel compared to the original one
@@chatblogvanlars5168 yes the new controller works fine at 48v and does not cause issues to original motor
@@chatblogvanlars5168 as I mentioned already, the pas is the same, with the exception that you get power from the line (0mph) rather than it kicking in at 8mph
Can I do this upgrade to the American version Z1
I have never been to America, let alone seen an American spec Super73 Z1, so I can't really say for sure if it will work exactly the same way. If I was you, I would go looking for @RunPlayBack's videos on youtube for the Z1 ;) There is a link in the description. Tell him I sent you ;D

@@GOrilzsTa did you watch @runplayback's videos where he does the controller mod to a Z1 yet? As he has actually done it to a Z1, I would still recommend you do. It's not just about connects.

@@orange73 yes but with the basic battery, is it possible to set the setting to a maximum of 30 km/h with these modifications that are mentioned in the video, like a setting in the lcd display or the controller
