  • I get this very basic vinyl player from the early 70s going again and see just how bad it sounds.

The HMV Kingston went from 1970 to 73 the later one's had the black power Cord and as your one is the front panel always comes off I'm a big HMV collector good luck with it 👍🥂

N neutral would prevent denting the rubber idler when the player is not in use.

To get the speaker front's off you have to use a long flat head Screwdriver the front's will come off at the four holes at the back

I'd this is anything like the ones we saw in the UK (generally made by Contek in Ireland) these would generally just be cheap Japanese units (from kits) repackaged with the woodwork built locally. That might explain the half a portable chassis inside. So the "Made in Australia" probably doesn't mean much!
They were seen as a bit of a joke here, the big stores would badge them up with German-sounding names but that fooled no-one.

It did happen, probably right after this one. Looks like these were put out around 1970 and ended around 74, when the Australian Electronics industry still had tariff protection. The fact its full of Euro transistor type numbers, some if not all likely made here, confirms it for me. Not long after, the Whitlam government removed the tariffs and like you say, these, portable TVs, etc all instantly became rebadged imports, followed not long after by all but the larger colour TVs, which were put in a local cabinet after the rest came out of a box from overseas. There were a few stragglers that tried to resist the tide in the early colour days, including a fully Australian designed and assembled colour TV from HMV.
