The part about podcasts vs standup.. Comedians are expected to be funny all the time. That's why some comedians suck at podcasting. Because they are better writers than personalities. He was probably just trying to be the "class clown" guy when put on the spot and everyones attention is on him.
From experience, I know people like Pete who acts like everything is normal, makes jokes of their issues and sprinkled moments of honesty about their depression. Without the right people by their side, they will kill themselves. You need to be there for people who make jokes like that. You can laugh with them, but being approachable saves lives
