  • Happy hearing birthday, Cooper.
    As a mama, these videos are still hard to watch back. But I see where we are today and I know unequivocally that we made the right choice for our family and our child.
    I share these because I believe it’s important to know what to expect going into activation day, and the reality is that this reaction is far more common than the viral videos you’ve probably seen. ❤️

    This is how you do it. Thank you for doing things quietly and taking your time with him. There are so many videos out there saying their child is crying tears of joy when they are actually terrified out of their minds. To make things worse, everyone is shaking really loud things in their faces or playing loud toys/music and talking really loudly. What people don't realize, hearing sounds for the first time is very painful. It's like bombs going off in your head because your brain has not had the chance to learn to regulate sounds and tune out what's not important. And it takes a while. A few months at least and many adjustments until it's comfortable provided the hearing device is actually working for them. Not everyone is eligible for hearing devices because of their type of hearing loss and what causes it.

    So many people shame others for choosing cochlear implants and think doing it is blatant snub to the entire deaf community. Hard to know what to do. It's hard on every level no matter what is done; even though all we want is to make all efforts plausible done for ease and quality of life...no matter which way its done. You're awesome parents!🎉

    • @liamevans7661
      @liamevans7661 Месяц назад +43

      I’ve only seen shaming parents when they choose CI and refuse to learn to sign, which honestly, yeah screw parents that just want to pretend their kid isn’t deaf. It’s so selfish.
      Thats far different than this I think.

    • @Jacqueline_Thijsen
      @Jacqueline_Thijsen Месяц назад +25

      @liamevans7661 agreed. Coop gets to choose because they went for the headband and also sign language. Letting your child choose (after some gentle pressure to at least try out all available options) is awesome.

      @TerranTaro Месяц назад

      Those people are idiots. Being deaf is a huge disability. People try to say it isn't but it 100% is. Most of the world is built on hearing sounds, without even a partial ability to hear you are at a hige disadvantage.

    • @clairbby5436
      @clairbby5436 19 дней назад +1

      i think the option is important. it seems to be one of those procedures that are easier to acclimate to at a young age, and i applaud parents for making that decision either way. i clearly can’t speak definitively on this subject as im not deaf, but just knowing that there are parents like beth that will always give their child a break from hearing, or even just support their decision to no longer use their CI is so beautiful. not only is she giving him the opportunity to hear (albeit a bit differently), she’s also learning AND teaching him a separate language simultaneously. parenting a disabled child the way they deserve takes a very strong heart and is not for everyone

      I can only imagine that it must be super overstimulating?
      I'm hearing and I have auditory hypersensitivity, and it's really directly tied with emotion! When I hear certain sounds, the emotional reaction (often dysregulation) is lightning-fast. I manage it, but it can be a lot. So I really feel for the people in videos like this (CI first turned on) when they cry. I don't know if it's a similar process?

I remember the kids with cochlear implants, and I remember seeing their joy as they could hear for the first time. I think it’s amazing how technology has enabled hearing where there would be none or limited, and I applaud you as a mom for advocating for your child just as much as my mom did for me. Hearing is a gift and I’m grateful for having technology to help me and others do it better. ❤

    I’m grateful you posted this.
    I’m wary of those heartwarming videos that show how awesome cochlear implants are the SECOND they’re turned on.
    Sometimes I think the child is terrified but they show it in a particular way because this is such an overwhelming experience.
    It’s not perfectly joyful instantaneously.
    And yes, they can be wonderful tools but they can also come with a huge adjustment period that’s much harder than what people are prepared for.
    There are so many sounds we aren’t aware of because we’ve been adapting since birth: planes, trains, horns honking, dogs barking, doorbells, etc etc.
    A child receiving a CE may be excited to hear their parents voice but they may also get very overwhelmed by all the other stuff going on that hasn’t yet faded to background.
    It can be anxiety provoking and just HARD.
    As a parent it’s completely reasonable to think a mistake has been made, BUT implants can be turned and taken off.
    Let the child adjust and go at their own pace the way your family does with Cooper and it’ll all work out the way it should.
    I see a lot of criticism from people in the community who think CEs are bad and nothing is that black and white.
    They argue that ASL should be taught and I agree because some folks will want to not use their implants and that is fine too.
    I just really appreciate how real you guys are about the complexities.
    Thank you!

    I was born with EVA, an orphan disease that causes hearing loss/deafness. I remember when I first got my hearing aids when I was 9 years old and it was the strangest feeling... I could almost feel the pen on paper when the audiologist was writing, could hear the fan when I never could before and the wind outside the window. Moments that were always silent suddenly filled with sound; it was overwhelming. It turned up the volume and made every sound feel 3D--- thats the best way I can put it. And words that I always struggled to hear became easier for me. I definitely have days, weeks even that I can't wear my hearing aids because its too much of a sensory overload and I feel so much more comfortable without them.
    You guys are fantastic parents for both learning sign which is essential, and providing him the ability to hear. As he grows up, he will have so many options and ways to communicate.

I decided to learn asl and I know because I said it to him out loud, when I opened my RUclips app tonight, it brought up your shorts to find your page, your story and see the video of him saying he heard something and that’s why he was out of bed - it made me laugh exactly how I laugh at Skyler because he is just as silly, as bright a light, in fact the brightest. Maybe his hearing will be gone but it won’t take away from who he is.

    I love these videos and I’m not an audiologist, lol but I really wish that they would let the babies look at their parents, Mom or Dad and then let the baby see moms mouth moving as well as let the first sound they hear be the moms voice!
    The baby is used to seeing moms lips move so you’d think it would be a little less scary to see as moms talking that she’s now making a sound to go with it!
    As well as to many sounds then all at once, is very overwhelming to even a hearing child!

    It makes sense that most babies get scared and cry when they first hear, after never hearing before -- it is probably like a jump scare!! This unknown, unexpected sensation, overwhelming! Imagine we discovered a new sense one day, one random moment. I'm so glad he had that opportunity and parents who will do everything they can for him!!!

    I dont think many people think about how overwhelming hearing is for them - esp at the beginning... overwhelming and even a bit scary. Your baby boy has clearly come such a long way!

    This reminds me of that video of this lady whose kid was hearing for the first time, and she was like “HEY BABY CAN YOU HEAR ME!!! HIIIII” and he started crying. And then he heard the sound of his cry which scared him more and he started crying harder 😭 moral of the story is don’t yell haha

    From the time in a baby is in their mama's belly, they hear everything. The constant hum of mama's uterus. Outside noises as well. You're already used to sound as soon as your born. BEFORE you were born or even fully developed. Imagine the brain explosion of hearing so suddenly 😢
    We can only do what we think is best as parents. Everyone has a different opinion and way. Want people to know you can also say NO to certain things as well 😢
    I regret eveyday clipping my seconds tongue tie. It wasn't all the way and she would have been fine and was nursing fine. She just couldn't latch on to old leftie. But ms. Righty was keeping up just fine 😅 i know because she still just drinks from that one. She was a calm calm baby until I put her through that trauma. I didn't realize it would be trauma. Because everyone and even the pediatrician assured me it was what we were supposed to do. Until i heard my baby crying in the next room. I couldn't go to her. Also found out they don't even numb the shit. 😡 let someone cut an adult mouth without some kind of numbing gel. But babies cant complain.
