Lol. I lived in Berkeley for 22 years, and this is not a picture of my Berkeley. Why didn't they show the beautiful gardens, that are all over Berkeley? Why didn't they show Ashkenaz? The Berkeley Botanical Garden? The Berkeley Marina? And the winding staircase paths all over the Berkeley hills? Show the community gardens too.
This is more of North Berkeley experience where rich hippies, grad students, and professors pretentiously show off. Not really the Telegraph/student side of Berkeley.
@@naryfonrasth But you lot are also constantly trying to portray it like this stuff in the video is not part of Berkeley. We are a much larger and more complicated place than either side wants to acknowledge. Your two sides of Berkeley insist on exiting separately and pretending like the other side does not exist.
It's amazing that there was not a single tie-dye t-shirt nor any vendors selling hash pipes. Telegraph Avenue must be considered too unremarkable at this point, especially for readers of The NY Times.
It's been cloned in too many college towns across the country and even the world. It is kind of "regular" these days, yes. It didn't actually change that much, but the world changed around it so it doesn't stand out anymore.
I live in Berkeley and have for my whole life. I think that this video beautifully captures Berkeley and sums it up into 6 minutes. Nothing is going to please everyone but this does a pretty good job of depicting Berkeley as it is now, not 50 years ago.
Are We Now post pandemic and what effect did that have on Berkeley? Do the homeless shacks and shacktown still exist? Isn't this video completely out of date? The Great depression started in 1929 and less than a hundred years later it is repeating so on the streets of Berkeley for some but not all, not the privilege Berkeley citizens that pay high rents. Too many Berkeley residents feel discarded like old newspaper on a rainy day. Did Joan Baez fail?
+Denise Simpson What do you expect? NYT 36 hours in manage to whitewash every destination they sell. Even New Orleans looks 60% white from their point of view. This is a blondes, basic travel guide for bland, basic bougies.
Sorry, I've been living here 25 years and Berkeley is gone thanks to gentrification. More like SF Jr. Full of pretension, way too expensive apartments, cafes and restaurants. No more hippies either. Vibrancy is gone. Absolutely nothing going on in this town after 11PM. Go to SF for a better time.
Isaak Akosta , I grew up there, my mom was a original cafe med person, gone now, it was a very nice place till about 1980 now it's a study in who gives a crap. When I go home I don't recognize the place and can't wait to leave.
“Encourage’s free thought” suurrreeee. Just as long as those thoughts don’t support current politicians, have conservative views, or conflict with Berkeley’s one sided thought process Oh and I’m perfectly aware that people in Berkely will hate me for saying this but seriously, step back and consider more than one train of thought
Berkeley has lost half its black population since 1970. Very different from how I grew up. But I’m in south Berkeley - Chez Panisse and the gourmet ghetto are not the Berkeley I know.
+Señor Invincible actually, I went to Berkeley as an undergraduate student and I went to ici, the ice cream shop. I do have to agree with you regarding the bar and chez panisse (it's supposed to be really expensive)
Berkeley smells like good food, and then you get a smacked in the face with the strong stench of human feces left from one of the homeless psychopaths that live in People's Park.
Berkeley peeps! Have you tried TooLow - Download the app and you can get 50% off on your favorite food items in Berkeley right away - available on both IoS and Android
I used to live at the Chateau Co-op and recall the days of the Berkeley Square. Both are gone. This town now has a Soul Cycle and an Equinox gym. Punk is dead.
I live in Berkeley. The free speech movement was born in Berkeley and seems to have died in Berkeley. It’s my experience that people here have totally lost the plot and will “cancel” you if you question the narrative of the mainstream media, particularly during this time of Covid. People are super fearful here and while there used to be more punk anarchists, (and anarchy leans to the furthest right on the political spectrum), Berkeley really is the communist capital of the US, and the liberals lean to the farthest left: socialist/Marxist/communist/fascist. I have come to hate this place. Reading the “next door” app makes me loathe my neighbors. This place is a shithole. There is a lot of money here yet the city is so corruptly mismanaged. The homeless problem is out of control, and Berkeley is so obnoxiously PC that we have to call them “houseless” rather than homeless. I could go on but I need to keep my bp down. 😆
Yeah. I moved here 6 years ago. This town isn't what I thought it was going to be. I've been cursed out many times by these uber-sensitive kids (that border on psychotic) for my center or center right views. I'm leaving next year... BTW, have you heard the term "residentially challenged" for the homeless? LOL
Less than 100 years after the Great depression started it has returned to make its home in Berkeley. If the woke people are truly fed up with white think then why are whites still running Berkeley ? Can blacks afford property in Berkeley and can they afford to rent there without government grants and student loans? Should People's Park be renamed Needle Park?
Hmm. This isn't the Berkeley I know. These pieces usually present any biased slant they choose. Downtown Berkeley is a skank-hole overrun with homeless. (Back in 2014 as well). Overall, the town is neither cultural, trendy nor sophisticated. Yes, there are some cool spots to visit but, you have to run the gauntlet of street people to get there.
Berkeley is where wannabe hipsters go for training. They receive a little rainbow book in a burlap bag smelling of patchouli oil, with a picture of the Teletubbies on the cover.🤣😭🤮🤮🤢

The rose garden!!

completing what's south Berkeley like by comparison? Thinking of moving there....
Suzie you don’t want to live there
Yeah, this is a pretty whitewashed take on Berkeley, unfortunately. The city is way more than what this video portrays.

"Berkeley has a good smell to it, an aroma" yea it's the weed
The first line had me crying
“Berkeley smells really good”
Hahahahahahahahaha
Ya I’m in stitches
The NY Times rarely gets the West Coast right...and it didn't here either.
@bumdog I think Anthony is referring to giving balanced takes on what a place is like. This video is an unbalanced, skewed portrayal of the city.
Guess there aren't any black folks in Berkeley.. there is soooo much more to this city than depicted in this video.. sighhhhh..
totally not my experience of Berkeley.... lol. and i live here. also by smell, I think he means weed. hahahahha
MMSGEE and urine
Drive up the 13 to Hillegass Ave. The smell of flowers and the beauty of the green and the light will hit you on a spiritual level.
Let’s be real Berkeley is just a college town their entire economy revolves around UC Berkeley Outside of campus it’s better known as gentrification
This piece does not show the real Berkeley AT ALL. It's a hipster wet dream and nothing more.
“He makes it more American without making it less Japanese”
That does not make sense.

Completely forgot all of the homeless people.
Prizefighter is Emeryville and it used to be Kitties Lol. And I can't believe Jupiter or Triple Rock wasn't added to the list.
I think we all know what that aroma is that reminds us all of Berkeley i’m not naming names
I loved living there in the 70s. from the streets up.
I love how Telegraph Avenue is hardly shown. That place is a hell hole.

Gray Young you’re not wrong-Iam from Berkeley and I left Bc of the political climate in Berkeley
Did Joan Baez completely fail in Berkeley? No lasting impact at all?
Did I miss 924 Gilman, Jupiter on Shattuck and Ashkanaz on San Pablo? get around some more.
Let there be Light

The people you described don’t deserve free speech, the founding fathers didn’t have these people in mind when they wrote the constitution.
