    I just bought a 2TB Samsung 990 EVO from Amazon for about $137, to go in my laptop computer. It runs great. It replaced a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro, and their Crystal Diskmark benchmark scores are about the same. The 990 EVO tends to run a little hot with large sequential writes, so I got a flat copper heatsink that is held on with little rubber bands, so it fits inside the laptop. With the heat sink, the 990 EVO stayed at around 60 C during a large sequential write operation and in the 40-50 range during normal operations. Overall, I'm very happy with this SSD as a high end gen 4 drive.

    If you have air going over it you don't need a heatsink. I'm in Sydney where we are having a pretty warm summer with a lot of humidity and with a heatsink my 980pro and 970 evo's are under 50 degrees celcius. This is without any AC.

  • @jamesking7868
    @jamesking7868 7 месяцев назад

    the problem I can see is that at least here in the uk the 2TB 990 evo is almost the same price as the 990 pro. So until the price changes you get less (no 2Gb dram cache and lower performance) and the 990 evo uses system memory (which you also paid for) and requires drivers to use that memory, so linux and unix uses will be left out, unlike with the pro. Its pure marketing that its gen 5 when it can't saturate gen 4.

    • @mingyi456

      Honestly I feel that will not be an apples-to-apples comparison, because dramless drives cause extra system ram usage which consumes power that is logged under cpu/motherboard power consumption instead of ssd power consumption.

      Perhaps in future we will see MoBos with PCIe5.0-Chipsets and multiple short 5.0x1-Slots -> than you can place such an SSD with adapter in it and have Gen3-Speeds (3700 max) using only ONE PCIe lane.

    • @FuelX

      @@Wlad1 This SSD requires 5.0x2. I don't know if it would work with a single lane. But yes, I guess an adapter could allow me to use 2 of these instead of a single 4 lanes gen 5. Maybe it could be useful on a storage server.

    • @Wlad1
      @Wlad1 7 месяцев назад

      @@FuelX No, it doesn't "require" 5.0x2, and Yes, it will work with a single lane and loose perhaps 10-20% of its speeds, so instead of 4800/3600 it will have about 3700/3500. In other metrics (random speeds/real life performance) it would loose even less - perhaps 5-10%.

    Samsung is a terrible company that doesn’t stand behind its products…..specifically the 2tb 980 Pro which I bought and it promptly went in to “read only mode” thereby rendering it useless. Samsung knew these drives were bad with the early firmware, but still chose not to warranty my drive. I will never buy another Samsung product. FU Samsung. Every time I see a Samsung review I will post this comment. Don’t by Samsung…….buy WD Black drives. They bury Samsung drives.
