I am a firefighter in Austria for various units (water + height rescue and the normal fire brigade). In the smaller towns there are "only" volunteers and nobody is paid for it. So there is no schedule. When you're called out, you just go to the station as quickly as possible. In the larger cities, there are firefighters who do this as a job. For them, it's a rotating shift that lasts 24 hours, with firefighters working a shift every other day. The shift starts at 7:30 a.m. with the handover of equipment and ends at 7:30 a.m. the next day. The firefighters are off duty until 7:30 a.m. the next day.
