    Love the video. The pen makes it so easy. I was always told by my tutors that the reason the gold gets dark is that it combines with the silver at the surface and the only way to avoid this was by nickel plating before gold plating. It can also be improved, but not eliminated, by using fine silver rather than sterling silver.
    It would be good to see a video of you experimenting and comparing!

    Thank you so much for this video. It has completely de-mystified pen plating plating. I tried looking at others on you tube and it all look too complicated and expensive, because they are all trying to sell you the kit. I can see from this I can use my regulated voltage supply I use for electro etching and few other components. I loved the shading effect you achieved with it.

    Thank you for this video. This is an interesting piece of equipment. I would love to find out whether this plating system could also be used on vintage pieces of jewellery. Ones that were originally gold/silver plated, but lost some of the plating as a result of wear. I am thinking about items such as vintage Florenza pendants/lockets or HAR Moghul star brooches. I think a video showing your attempt to re-plate this kind of item could become very popular. Once again thank you for sharing all your wisdom and experience with us.

    Hiya yet again, having seen and read about gold fill I'm thinking this would be wonderful to plate any cut edges, like with a disc punch. The exposed edge would show against the gold as it tarnished so any gold you could use to cover the brass... Thinner than the original GF coating but still it will protect the brass or whatever from tarnishing. Again a great video, thank you, Dear Lady Stardust. Steve xx...

    This is great information to know we can do plating at the home level, I didn’t know before this! Thank you. I have a question, on the second ring that you plated (the closed ring) with the angles...I have just started soldering wire into rings and I love it! I would like to learn how to bend/shape it like that hexagonal ring that you show here. Do you have a tutorial on how to get the wire shaped like that into a ring?

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  4 года назад +2

      Hi! Thank you so much for your lovely comment! :) I'm very happy you've enjoyed it. To answer your question, I have an older tutorial where I show how to make similar, simple stacking rings: ruclips.net/video/Sw0g9PTNIwI/видео.html I don't think I have the one that's hammered like this in there, so basically the extra step that you would take to add these flat hexagonal shapes, would be to use a hammer with the flat end and hammer carefully. This will enlarge your ring, so keep that in mind! Make sure your ring before hammering isn't precisely your size, because after hammering it will get bigger! But yes, it's achieved by hammering, very simple trick. Hope that helps! 😍

    Hiya again Lady Stardust, I forgot to say last time, was that really 10 months ago? Anyway, your makeup is perfect, wonderful effect.
    To darken the effect:- Higher voltage? More layers of in this case gold? I've just seen the comment on nickel plating, my bad, oooppps. But what effect would the first two have? How about on to copper? Something tells me you may need to do a series on this. Having watched your video a few times now, I think I may indeed want to buy one of these. My design geans are finally working...

    Hi! It was a great video. Have you tried to apply this technique to quartz by the chance? It has piezoelectric properties so probably can work.

  • @dr.lexwinter8604
    @dr.lexwinter8604 3 года назад

    Being able to buy gold in general is a tricky thing. I wouldn't trust gold in solution from anyone, it'd probably be brass. It's far easier to find gold where I live though (Australia), a weekend out panning and you'd have enough to make a good solution.

  • @hallieshouse13

    Thanks for the video! How long would you say it’d last? Also, would applying several layers be an option? Or, does it not make a difference? 😊

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  Год назад

      Unfortunately, adding several layers won't work, the plating will only stick to the areas not previously covered. In terms of how long it lasts - I made an experiment on a ring (the bezel) and it lasted could of months is a nice, fresh state. Then it was till there, but you could tell that it started being polished off (usually by my own fingers and normal wear). In the necklaces, however, the effect lasts much longer. I'd say earrings( stud earrings) would have similar issue as my ring, the layer would get brushed off after some time. Generally, the areas that don't come in contact with clothes or body aren't affected.

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  Год назад

      Thank you! Supper happy you enjoyed it :)) As for cleaning the pen, that's a very good question. I noticed the same and that it seems the white bits aren't reusable. Most like a new one is required for each plating session. But you got me curious and I will double check this!

  • @jo-lynneoliver8913
    @jo-lynneoliver8913 3 года назад +1

    Hi, thank you for the video. Do you know how long approximately the gold lasts? I want to maybe gold plate my copper rings but if the gold comes off quickly there won't be much point. I see other jewellery makers sell gold plated copper rings, do you think they use this technique or is there another way? Thanks

    • @suesun7072
      @suesun7072 3 года назад

      How long it lasts depends on how much gold you plate on the copper. If you just brush your ring one time with this kind of pen plating, it won't last long. If you brush it over and over again with refreshed solution, the plating becomes thicker and will last.

    great vlog again flower but the plating tool not for me dont think i will bother, the effect is in my opinion a bit on the wishy washy side not enough beef behind it to give the piece any luster it looked very dull, the price and the result for the money to me are not good enough, i would not like to try to much to polish anything to often either, could get better the more you get used to it more or less power i will await with bated breath but i have my doubts, how are you getting on with the engraving i hope you are still practising, take care keep well keep safe.

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  4 года назад +2

      Hi Albert! It could be because of the matte finish that I used on the fish design, I wasn't aiming for the shiny effect. I could've mentioned that actually. If you look at the manta, which was polished prior to plating, the effect is more shiny. Though obsviously it's not going to look exactly like the polished piece of solid gold, it is just a thin layer of plating after all :) But great for those smaller details and adding some colour. Anyway, thank you for you comment and feedback! Take care and stay safe
