People don't understand what male depression looks like because men do an incredible job hiding it. I think a big part of toxic masculinity is not allowing men to express their emotions- including anger- because they are deemed "negative" emotions. Just like women are supposed to always smile and be nice to be "feminine". Maybe that's the root of it- negative emotions have no place in a healthy society so they just eat you alive.

Thank you, Jake! As someone that’s lived with bi-polar disorder for decades, who’s lost jobs, friends, family, and homes due to admitting to another the state of my mental health, I don’t talk about it with anyone anymore. Silence maintains the job, maintains friendships, keeps a roof over my head. More people need to understand that the happy guy telling jokes and that’s always willing to help others is the guy that needs someone to help him. I understand that in my cases it’s a chemical imbalance, so even in my deepest despair I know it’s temporary and won’t last. I also know that when I’m manic and high on life that I make bad decisions like telling people I’m bi-polar. So … the silence.
I dont understand...how do you do it? How do you live with it? Ive recently been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and its scary. Now, not just that I cant make friends and keep those relationships, when you tell people they shy away. Highschools already shit for me but now I'm the "weird girl" because of it. Theyre always saying I'm just weird, saying that I'm too unpredictable. I'm trying to be nice im trying to make friends but just because I dont understand my own emotions, or even my own disorder dosent mean I'm a bad person. I'm scared of being alone and my fears have come true. I'm only 15, I know I have forever to go, to get the right help but just...how do you live with it? My only coping is drinking till I'm blacked out and forget it all
@@augie197 I’m 48, and was diagnosed at age 28, but I’ve lived with it all my life. It doesn’t effect me as much as it effects my loved ones. For me it’s like riding a brief wave of hyperactivity between long lows of lethargy. I schedule my life so that I have things I need to do regardless of how I feel; this keeps me centered during the highs and gives me direction during the lows. Alcohol is not a good way to self medicate, you need to speak with a professional and get on the correct medication (not all medications work the same, it takes time to figure out what will work best for you). That will even you out, smooth out the highs and lows. As to friends, get a hobby you enjoy, and find the community in your area based around that hobby, then just be you. Let those that like you for you share with you the hobby you all enjoy. The most important thing is that you speak with a good therapist, who will teach you the techniques for mitigating your highs and making your lows fulfilling.

But at your age, with the way our hormones go absolutely crazy, it's gonna be the hardest time of your life. Its only temporary though. It does get better and you can learn to live with it. It's better you know now so you can learn to love yourself for your faults as much as your good parts and you'll find others that will do the same. The video that brought up the "engagement baiting" discussion actually did it in two ways. Partly the acting weird thing, sure, but I've also seen a LOT of people/pages making another type of engagement baiting (often involving astrology, I've noticed) where they get people to comment. both of my sons open up to me about their feelings instead of going to their dad because their dad just tells them to man up or stop being such a baby. he also doesn't approve of their sexuality and has said many times that he will never accept a gay child and has belittled both boys for their long hair, but more the oldest because he's openly pan and has even talked about bringing a guy friend home for prom, to which his dad raises hell over. and after some recent convos with my oldest, i realize he is a lot more like me than his dad and for that i am both grateful because i am able to understand him easier and explain things he might be confused about, and afraid because i have anxiety and depression and i'm still working on changing all of the horrible things done to me over the past 23 years and he has told me that he has also been feeling depressed. but both of us have found other ways to work through our dark days without needing therapy or meds, but we both know those options are there if needed. but i am glad that my kids feel like they can come to me with any issue that they have, or just want to talk about something to see my reaction or have my take on it since they know their dad refuses to accept anything that isn't "real man".
You are a wonderful parent - thank you for being there for your kids, just listening to them is a lot more than some children in the world get these days 😔🥺
Im a kpop stan (and army/BTS fan) and, yes, kpop is made to be addictive when it comes to surpass barriers in the western. But not all the groups or idols are like this, and many of them struggle to get out of this and have their own voice about their music (and we know SK is not very open about many things). The Oli thing is: they are not a fan, they not "fell hard", they are using a bunch of sensible topics to make themselves relevant, but this is disrespectful. Its not a matter of being a kpop fan, its just that they crossed so many limits in so many ways, and yet they get what they wants and all people see is that they are a kpoper. Apparently, they used to have some self-esteem problems and "copying" someone was their way to get over this, but we all know this behaviour is very far from trying to be a better version of themselves, and is closer to a weird obssession + midiatic engagement. We (and for "we", I mean armys and reasonable ppl who have saw what he did) really hope they stop using sensible topics and kpop, because this just entice hate and prejudice against ppl (ppl who just like a certain music genre and ppl who is really suffering with dysphoria and violence) (and yes, he is VERY FAMOUS) (im sorry for my long rant and broken english, i love you, you are super cute and is weird seeing your teeths white

I probably just had the most meaningful and important conversation in my head when he started talking about depression in men, and it is absolutely true, girls if you're man doesn't seem to be himself try to get him to talk about it, maybe not bring it up straight away but try to steer the conversation in that direction, and just let him vent, that's what I do with my boyfriend, or any guy you meet just try to strike up a conversation

They speak against the harsh corporate conditions that have been placed on them. I love them. And yes I do love other music
yes yes, I feel like a lot of people don't know that one of the reason why BTS is famous is due to their divergent from the 'factory' side/image of Kpop, BTS does many genres (including hip hop, funk, ballad, classical, edm etc), and they write, produce and compose most of their music themselves, their label have given them full musical/creative control from 2013 till now and are paid well (percentage wise) too, even when they were not making much
yes! another form of engagement baiting is when people pretend they don't know popular things, particularly songs. They'll do video's like "if you were born in the 90s you'll know at least 80 % of these" and then they'll look really confused at songs like fricken 'cotton eye joe' like they've no idea what it is, just for the "how have you never heard that, omg!" comments urghhhhhh

I think it’s great that you’re talking about male depression and those topics because it really isn’t talked about even though I’m not male I was raised by my dad who projected those expectations of “masculinity” onto me and so when I developed depression my first thought was no one gives a shit because that’s the culture and it really does need to be talked about love you’re videos keep it up!
still barely any people gives a shit about male depression
@@royalecrafts6252, well, the best way to fix that is to keep talking about it.
@@wretchelttv well if I get angry I will probably go to jail so no I can't really show emotions to be honest
@@royalecrafts6252 I understand that. My hubby is a large man with RBF and he's intimidating when he's happy. Back in the day men could fight it out and walk away. Now everything is PC. I'm not saying fighting is the answer, but naturally men have testosterone and anger as evolutionary defenses. How do we adapt from PC culture to allow men to BE men?
Your reaction to the screaming woman was the same as ours: wtf?! I think she swung on the woman that was recording then tried to flip it as if she was the innocent bystander.
Something close to this from what I remember. I don't recall if there was any physical attack, but she was full on the aggressor until the camera came out.
@@RBelmont007 exactly. I saw a small clip of her swinging but not making contact, then segue into the shrieking.
So … the silence.
keep on keeping on man, hope you continue being kind and find someone you can trust
My only coping is drinking till I'm blacked out and forget it all
@@augie197
I’m 48, and was diagnosed at age 28, but I’ve lived with it all my life.
@@augie197 Hey, I don't have bi-polar but I have lived with a variety of mental health problems my whole life and was a lot like you at your age. I didn't fit in, I got bullied, it was the worst because it didn't seem like anyone would do anything. But at your age, with the way our hormones go absolutely crazy, it's gonna be the hardest time of your life. Its only temporary though. It does get better and you can learn to live with it. It's better you know now so you can learn to love yourself for your faults as much as your good parts and you'll find others that will do the same. Just because it's hard doesn't mean it's not worth it. I almost took my life at 13 and I would have missed out on a great man and 3 great kids. You never know what awaits you. Sorry that got kind of deep but as a mom I worry about our youth and maybe you don't have someone to tell you this.

I'd totally be here for a video with more serious subject tiktoks and Jake giving his thoughts on it. Like he did here aroud the three minute mark. Don't get me wrong I like the other content aswell.
Same.
i love when he gets on those tangents a lot
Agreed, I would be just as interested in hearing his mind work with critical thought as I am satisfied listening to his criticisms and laughter at the hilarity of TikTok.
Thank you for talking about men and depression! Mental health is stigmatized but Men's mental health is ignored. If men felt comfortable taking advantage of supports then we would be able to do so much more. They would streamline that stuff for real!! They would make a drive through for counseling and drinks as well as shopping all in one place. I am so glad I found your content it has opened my eyes to so much!
The toilet thing was most likely done on purpose, there are too many 'cleaning' videos on tiktok where they mix a bunch of chemicals in their toilet
The ones who make those videos are so toxic too. I got doxxed once for pointing out they mixed 3 or 4 chemicals that WILL create a very toxic gas and WILL freeze their lungs.
But no I'm just a "chemical karen"
@Eddie Gluskin oh I'm glad to. It's just so infuriating
@Eddie Gluskin idk if you understand how annoying things work. they dont just get less infuriating when you realize its biting the people in the a$5. It is still infuriating knowing they're destroying the environment and plumbing and hurting their pets too. Wasting so much product too.
I'm glad they'll be getting karma. That doesnt mean I get any less angry when I see this stuff happening.
@Eddie Gluskin yes it is hilarious. But the stuff I mentioned pisses me off nonetheless.
I HATE that. Someone who doesn't know better is going to die because of those videos.
I miss not knowing a lot of things about what people do.
This entire episode was a fuckin fever dream.
On the whole Kpop thing: If you look at just what goes into the labels crafting their idols, it is beyong insane! its not just about being pretty and singing, you spend years before you debut being molded into the most desirable person possible THEN you debut and you have to be social media savy and work hard to be the best. The Koreans piss all over UK/US in terms of engagement and working their idols to the bone!
And the worse? They don't even know when or if they'll ever gonna debut and if they get to debut they never know when they could disband suddenly (someone said: "winning the lottery is easier than debuting in kpop")

More people need to talk about mental health, especially males, hopefully the more we have these conversations the more normal & accepted it will become not just for men but everyone
As an American if I ever walked into Walmart and people were just singing the national anthem I would perform a lobotomy on myself. I don’t know how but I’d figure it out.

The video that brought up the "engagement baiting" discussion actually did it in two ways. Partly the acting weird thing, sure, but I've also seen a LOT of people/pages making another type of engagement baiting (often involving astrology, I've noticed) where they get people to comment. Things like "the signs as SpongeBob characters" or whatever and of course everyone will be like "omg I'm a Gemini and I'm Mr. Krabs!" or they will literally straight up ask for comments like "tell me ur height, zodiac sign and age, I wanna see smth 🤔🤔🤔" and they get literally thousands of comments. NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR HEIGHT THEY JUST WANT TO GET MORE COMMENTS!

Trans-racial is a thing, but it’s in reference to kids adopted by a couple of a different race and culture. The act of adopting a child of a different is referred to as transracial adoption.

That’s just having a different heritage. Race is not referring to culture or behavior (Despite common belief). Race is only made up of genetic makeup.

I lost a really good friend to suicide and I wish I would have walked with him the day before he did what he did. Yes, we need to address the issue of male depression and female too. We need to care more.
both of my sons open up to me about their feelings instead of going to their dad because their dad just tells them to man up or stop being such a baby. he also doesn't approve of their sexuality and has said many times that he will never accept a gay child and has belittled both boys for their long hair, but more the oldest because he's openly pan and has even talked about bringing a guy friend home for prom, to which his dad raises hell over. and after some recent convos with my oldest, i realize he is a lot more like me than his dad and for that i am both grateful because i am able to understand him easier and explain things he might be confused about, and afraid because i have anxiety and depression and i'm still working on changing all of the horrible things done to me over the past 23 years and he has told me that he has also been feeling depressed. but both of us have found other ways to work through our dark days without needing therapy or meds, but we both know those options are there if needed. but i am glad that my kids feel like they can come to me with any issue that they have, or just want to talk about something to see my reaction or have my take on it since they know their dad refuses to accept anything that isn't "real man".
throw the whole dad away jeezus
We (and for "we", I mean armys and reasonable ppl who have saw what he did) really hope they stop using sensible topics and kpop, because this just entice hate and prejudice against ppl (ppl who just like a certain music genre and ppl who is really suffering with dysphoria and violence)

3:03 it feels so good to actually hear someone talk about this especially when its someone who has a big influence on people. My cousin took his life last year and no one ever told me thats what happend until a couple of months ago i was always told he was killed in a forestry accident my mum never told me cause last year I really just didnt want to be here any more and she thought that telling me what really happened would ya know make me do it. even tho i didnt know my cousin very well i still think about him all the time. but alot of the time people dont want to be here any more but they dont wanna go cause they know that the people who know and love them will get upset and may try to harm themselves too. what i think is stupid is that "its fine for a women to feel sad" but when it comes to men they are always told to suck it and to be a man and are always told "real men dont cry"
"I will make you my stepson know your place and act accordingly" had me shook.
