Mount Olympus beckons... and Percy must face his greatest battle yet.
Demigod Percy Jackson leads a quest across America to prevent a war among the Olympian gods.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is an American fantasy television series created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg for Disney+, based on the book series of the same name by Riordan.[1] Walker Scobell stars as Percy Jackson, alongside Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri.
Development on the series began by May 2020, following a pitch by Riordan to Disney Branded Television. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz were announced as showrunners in July 2021, with James Bobin hired to direct the first episode in October. Scobell was cast in the lead role in January 2022, with Jeffries and Simhadri joining the cast in May. By September, Anders Engström and Jet Wilkinson were also set to direct multiple episodes of the series. Filming began in June 2022 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and concluded in February 2023, with additional cast members revealed throughout 2022 and 2023.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiered on December 19, 2023, on Disney+, with the first season consisting of eight episodes. The series received positive reviews from critics, who largely praised its faithfulness to the source material, the worldbuilding and the performances of the cast, with many deeming it better than the 2010-2013 film series.
Walker Scobell as Perseus "Percy" Jackson, a young demigod and son of Poseidon[3]
Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, a daughter of Athena who has been training at Camp Half-Blood for five years[4]
Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, Percy's best friend and a satyr disguised through magic as a 12-year-old boy[4]

I like more this ending with luke compared to what happens in the book. This shows luke as someone who actually cares about percy and wasnt actually jealous of him and his success. He actually sounds like someone who cares about demigods and how the Gods treat them. Also
Grover: No one has checked the seas.
Cronus: Your survival is the key to my return.
I am glad they are going ahead with everything on book 2. We better get a season 2

and having Annabeth there was a brilliant touch that made it hit even harder. Especially the way Luke says her name, you can hear just pure horror in his voice

@@brayanisrael9175 i see a lot of people bring this up but honestly there's no saying the shoes would've risked percy's life. they were meant to safely deliver the master bolt directly to kronos along with percy (who kronos & luke want to recruit). realistically it would NOT have been a dangerous one-way fall, but many assume so based on... iykyk (heroes of olympus spoilers)

@@typo1345 AND how Annabeth chose Percy over Luke without a second thought. One of the few things that irked me in the book was her loyalty to Luke even after knowing of the betrayal. Imo it seems that Riordan has also realized that it drew on way too long

An answer to your spoiler question:
If I remember correctly, we learn that the Great Prophecy exists in Sea of Monsters (book 2) so that Thalia's revival has more weight to it. But we don't actually get to hear the Great Prophecy verbatim until the war is getting closer, probably in Battle of the Labyrinth (book 4).

I don't think the Great Prophecy is even mentioned in book 1. It's definitely hinted at in book 2 and is important to the plot of book 3, but we don't hear the full thing until book 5.

i’m gonna miss this show and your reactions to it so much!!
the prophecy is explained more in book 2 and really starts to drive the plot at the end of it / start of book 3 once thalia is brought back so kronos could try to use her the same way he did with percy.
anyways finger’s crossed for season 2 (and all future seasons)

Of course Annabeth is very close to Luke - and I think Leah packed a LOT of anger and pain into "I heard everything" - but I have to disagree that he's all she had. Chiron is like a father to her (as we see in the next book, when he leaves), and remember that she has a cabin full of siblings as well.

Hi Lexi! I think I may be fairly unique among your viewers in that discovered you through Buffy and Angel reactions (love your humor, girl!) and I have never read the Percy Jackson series. I am now watching the show with my 10-year-old daughter, who has also never read the books (I know, crazy- she has friends who have read it but she tried when she was 9 and I think it was a little advanced for her at the time). Anyway, we both really enjoyed the first season and are definitely hoping Disney continues with the series. Since we can't compare it to the book, we enjoy it for what it is. I particularly love the cinematography and the way the sets combine the ancient with the modern. That said, your criticizms of the show have really made me wonder what I am missing- I like the idea of the kids discovering more on their own and messing up at bit more in their journey. To that end, my daughter and I decided to read the first book together; I may be even more excited to read the books than she is!

I am a viewer who only watched the show. The only background I have before this is the first movie which was also not that clear. I think my criticism is the same for a lot of book readers too because I hope they improve the “Show not tell” aspect they have going on because I would love to connect the dots myself. Though I guess it’s understandable considering they are compressing a book with huge lore into a series. It just feel like a lot was going on off camera that we should have seen but didn’t. Harry potter movies did a good job with this though I wouldn’t really say Rowling is the best world-builder so I guess that’s why it worked too. But yeah I’m still looking forward for season 2, will now read the first book hopefully I control myself and won’t read the next book before the second season since I want a pure viewing experience first 😅

I haven't read the books in a couple of years (except for Sea of Monsters, which I reread to see if I could identify Reyna, or if she was a retcon for _Heroes,_ which yeah, I think she was), but I rather liked the series as a whole. I kind of agree with you about pacing, and personally I think they didn't allow enough time to pass between Percy coming to camp and having to leave for the flashback with Luke to have occurred. Doing it as a flashback instead of as a foreshadow was a decision, and I wonder if it was in post rather than in the original script.
It's sad that they'll have to replace the actor for Zeus in Season 2, but I think he doesn't make a direct appearance in the books until Book 5, so they have time to seek a suitable replacement. Meanwhile, I have your _Angel_ reactions keeping me going. So thanks, Miss Lexi, and keep it up.

it’s true reyna isn’t mentioned directly but hylla is in sea of monsters by name sooooo it at least does feel connected there (and ofc later when annabeth meets her she recognizes that hylla greeted them but reyna was one of the attendants who just took care of annabeth and brushed her hair)

@@another_julia Retcon means that when RR wrote _Monsters,_ he had no intention to reuse those characters in another story, so there was no reason to name them or give them any recognizable features. The decision that one of those girls would become so important in later stories was made later. But that's what I was looking for.

    • @another_julia
      @another_julia 5 месяцев назад

@@menachemsalomon yeah i get that. it’s technically a retcon, but i see using a name he already had as less so, just in my interpretation. for me, more direct retcons would be rr deciding thalia actually has blue eyes after saying they were green in sea of monsters. or that blackjack is a guy

I was very critical of this show overall, but I actually liked the finale. I still don't dig most of the changes, but if they work in the long run, so be it. I liked all the scenes with Luke (he's one of my favorite characters, so no surprise here). The actor is doing a great job, in my opinion.
And I think Walker's acting improved a lot through the season, which I'm happy to see.
Annabeth's reaction to Luke's betrayal was... nonexistent. Which is disappointing. I blame the writing and I blame the acting (I'm sorry, but I don't get Annabeth in this show mostly because of how Leah portraits her).
I hope there's S2, and I hope they do a better job with showing instead of telling. I know these kids are smart, but them explaining everything almost right away killed all the suspense.
