I feel the same way about young adult books, you really cant ever be too old for them! They’re just fluffy fun reads with low angst! I feel like everyone should just read whatever makes them feel good, regardless of targeted age for the book. I recently read betting on you by Lynn painter which is is a YA and looooved and instant 5 star!

As a reader who isn’t into fantasy or sci fi I feel readers like me largely miss out on some of the best covers, sprayed edges etc. I love beautiful covers etc but most are kept for epic high fantasy which would go over my head

I used to love star ratings as a kid but as I've grown older I've really started to hate them to be honest. I don't even use goodreads very much anymore simply because it insists on you rating it all the time. I guess I've met too many people who only think about what they would rate the book out of five, rather than trying to critically evaluate what works well about the book and what doesn't, if that makes sense? It seems so reductive to me and often kills any kind of literary discussion that you can have - my friends now don't tell me the reasons WHY they loved or hated a book, they just say "It was a 5-Star read/1-Star read for me" and leave it at that, which is such a shame because I'd love to know the reasons behind why they love their favourite books.
My hot take (inspired by a lecturer I had at uni) - writing in your books is a good thing actually, and should be encouraged, because it tells us so much about the person who owned the book. Historians love it when they discover marginalia inside someone's book cos it sort of acts as a window into lives from the past - e.g. the reason we can date when Shakespeare's Hamlet must have been performed is because somebody, completely randomly, scribbled in their book "I went to see Hamlet today lol" or something like that. That sort of stuff is a goldmine for telling us about the past, please encourage everyone you know to write literally anything in their books.
Great video! But then again when do you ever NOT put out a great video?

@@thJune-ze7dn Thankyou sm, that means a lot!! I love this outlook, I completely get what you mean with the 5 star rating system (although I love to give my books a rating) it is definitely a great thing to speak about what was good about the book and not just the overall star rating. In terms of the writing in the margins I think that outlook is so cool… boutta go run and write in all of my books!!😂
