LED Ring - Laser Position Indicator

- This video shows a bracket used to hold a ring of LEDs intended to produce a visual indication of the position of a CO2 laser focusing lens. I install the bracket onto a K40 CO2 laser cutter in the video.

Officially just had a nerdgasm at work. Will be making one of these when I get the chance. Pure genius.
Why is this not the standard way of doing things? The head mounted position lasers get in the way, require chain to route power to them, don't stay aligned as you change height of table. This is so much better. I'm just going to use flat acrylic though.

Fantastic and one of the easiest and useful addons for the K40. It will be my first addon but as my second is going to be air assist and I trust your choices, where did you get the design for the nozzle you are using?

Thanks, it was different than what I saw on Thingiverse so thought there was something special about it. VERY nice you did it in OpenSCAD. I was surprised to see there was no inner chamber and the laser head was exposed to the pressure. I figure it is since the laser head makes the blocking surface for the air and I figured it was a hallow funnel with the angled mirror. Thanks again. I'm making space today in the garage for the laser cutter(still in the box and it's killing me! ).
seeing your video just gave me an idea: could you put a red line laser on the side of the hole? one vertical line on top of the hole and one horizontal on the side of the hole. It feels like you could get a fine cross from that, still without the inconvenience of having something actually in the path of the beam.
I am not sure how bright the lines would be where the lines cross. Could be cool if it works. Let me know how it works out.

That was a very smart idea. One of my biggest pet peeves is that the red led that comes with the unit is not accurate. If you move the table up or down, it changes the position. I have a bunch of Harbor Freight dead flashlights that have 8 led's on the outside and one on the inside. I am going to give this a try. I don't think it is necessary to 3D print the bracket when you have a laser that can make the parts much easier. Also, would it be a good idea to mount it directly to the laser at the exit of the laser tube? I think making a bracket to fit there would be pretty easy.
Yes, there are many ways to make this concept work. (Of coarse mine is the best...just kidding)

The original video, by Peter Jensen, that I reference in the description used red LEDs.
Do you happen to know if there is a shop that manufactures these types of lights? I don't have all the tools and components that you have on the video to make the LED light, or the expertise in electronics to solder everything together correctly. I would hate to invest time and energy into making the light and then end up frying something. Marvelous product to produce a quick center on the K40! Thanks!

Brilliant! Love the idea! Can you provide a link for the lights and perhaps a picture or video showing the wiring downstream?
The LEDs came from a "Guidesman 210-1004 14 LED" flashlight. (I am pretty sure my mother in-law got if free after rebate at a hardware store.) The magnet was salvaged from an old microwave oven. The power supply was a 5V DC power supply from a flip style cell phone. I wired a 180 Ohm resistor in series with the LEDs. This was completely made with things I had in my parts bins. The intent was to show the concept not the best way to make it.

+Anthony Atkinson The magnet came out of a microwave oven. This was made with stuff I had lying around so it might be difficult to reproduce exactly but the basic idea could be be reproduced in many ways.

The circle got smaller, but it was harder to see because part of the arc of the LEDs was partially obscured by the air assist nozzle from the way it looks.
Nice! Maybe a few smaller neodymium magnets instead of the one big one...
I am sure a couple of neodymium magnets would work and be more compact. The magnet I used was salvaged from an old microwave oven. I managed to make the whole thing from items I had lying around.
