just had an issue with my 05 forester xt and this video helped me solve the problem myself. A few days ago I wasn't able to put my car into park after driving around after work and getting to my driveway. I assumed the transmission was messed up or the breaking mechanism that lets you engage the park was broken. I decided to pop off the housing to check and see if any coins or anything fell down in the track that would be preventing the shifter from moving and Voila! there was a chap stick that fell down between my ashtray area and shifter. puled it out, popped the covering back on and was able to finally put the car back into park and take the key out of the ignition. Thanks Zookeeper JohnG for the plug
I used size 37 from Sylvania. I put the new bulb in and initially it didn't light up because the metal wire contacts on the bulb weren't contacting the socket. I took the bulb back out and used a flathead screwdriver to pull the metal contacts at the base of the bulb outwards. The contacts went from flush against the bulb like this: | | to sticking out like this: \ / When I reinserted the bulb it made contact and worked great. Just in case anyone else has this problem.
I was going to say the same thing. I bought mine ay thur beginning of the year and just thought i need to look at the dash board to see what gear i was in if it was night. 🤷♂️. Now i have to go change it. LOL
Mine just came on randomly the other night while moving it to another part of my driveway. Figured it mended itself, but I was wrong. Did he say what kind of lightbulb we need?
@@JorgioBeckett Oh good, I'm not the only one just stumbling upon this recently. Never knew it had one, but now I feel compelled to fix it. Did bulb 37 like Josh suggested end up working for you?
@@BloodAsp Honestly haven't touched it. It came back on and it hasn't gone out again. I'm actually considering getting a new shifter assembly out of a Baja turbo, so I'll be dealing with the light from that while I'm swapping it out. No point in opening it up when I'm just going to be replacing things in the near future.
Thank you for the video I was hoping you would tell me what size bulb You are replacing, mine went out and no lettering on the bulb. But again thanks for taking the time to do the video
That black strip under the trim you pulled off that protects the shift, whatever that is, I need to replace it because mine was severely degraded and cracked which jams the shifting stick because the plastic crumbles up

... so how do I find your other video? I have to replace the gear select cable and I don't want to break any of the plastic surrounding the shifter itself. Thanx for the video anyway, we're all in this together. PEACE
@@ZookeeperJohnG haha! Thanks for taking my comment with grace. I found out that if I jiggle my gear shift handle the lights come on…I guess I have a faulty connection. So, for now, I will wing it and hope it doesn’t get to the stage where I need your videos. But will come back if I do. Thanks!

I'm so happy I was able to find this, now I can clean my car and now I can replace my bulb too. Thanks! Gonna save this Playlist for future usage

Thanks a lot. I was just looking for that.
You are most welcome

Should be in the owner's manual, but I *think* it is a #37 lamp.

They call it a ribbon, I'd salvage one from an auto recycler for like $5 if you can.
@@ZookeeperJohnG you can't just put a boot cover on instead or can't you?
Wow so there is one there. I always asked myself who designed this area and why is it so damn dark down there.
Thank you for sharing this, I just changed mine😁 (2007) LL Bean edition & I also switched out the interior lamps with blue led’s
Hey Id love to have mine be bluebinstead of the default. Can you help me find the blue led that would match the default light bulb this car has?
But how do you take the cover off!
Would this method work for my ‘05 Outback?
It might, I do not know if or how that shifter is different.
what size bulb is it
is that the same size for the clock light?
How do you get the bulb out the socket, mines really tight

will this work on 2012 and are there led equivalent bulbs?
I have not done this on a new model, so cannot say for sure.
What kind of lightbulbs do you use for the gearshift
I do not recall, the bulb ID is in the owner's manual.

Anyone know what size LED for a 1999 Subaru Forester?
I imagine a t5
New Foresters don’t have that little bulb. Now you have to replace the whole unit. $$$$. Subaru engineers do it again. Thanks
That stinks!
I cant figure out why my 1996 Outback, the shifter light works in P, R, N, 3,2,1 but not in D, is there more than one light bulb?
Do not know about a 1996, but the 2005 only had one. The operator's manual would be a definitive resource.
How do you get the bulb out of the socket?
I am also stuck on this
Quarter turn twist of the holder to get it out of the cover, then pull the bulb from the holder.
It anyone's doing this with the 05-07 saabaru the light bulb cable is super short why why its not coming out. Twist the bulb out
Why not put a link to the previous video where you take the first piece off? This is kind of useless without it.
Not a bad idea, thanks for the suggestion!
