I saw this a couple months ago and decided to do myself. It works great. I am here in Texas and decided to do for my fall winter garden of lettuces, etc. It creates a tropical effect inside and the plants love it. Plants grow faster and bigger. Glad to have seen this video.

Here, I recommend to staple bare wires about 1/4 inch apart, , around the outside of the top board of the raised bed, and attach to a battery or step down transformer from ac voltage.... This will keep slugs and other night crawlers out of any raised beds.. . Because the wires do not touch, they will not use any electricity...put in a fuse in case the wires are ever crossed for any reason, , like carrying a board and the board rubs against a wire , shorting it. Also may need to just keep the weeds from growing over the outsides of the raised beds. -Teach the children how to put the wires in, and let them do it and sort of maintain it. .. That may be something that would interest them... Especially if they decide to transform the voltage up to a couple thousand volts and forget to tell you !! - At this time, most of the world is in shutdown, and I need to build one of these real fast.

You should try boc choy...such a fantastic plant to grow..quick growth and very hardy and doesn't mind the cold and doesn't mind being cramped together in tiny space. Oh, and i think amazing that you're teaching your son about how to grow food. Its so important for him. My dad was a prolific gardener but he never taught us anything about gardening!!

Christopher this is the first of your videos I have watched and I am so happy to have found your site. It has given me the incentive to try growing peppers again. I live in Subtropical Australia and the rainy season always waterlogs my capsicums. I think a hoop house may be the answer, so I can control the amount of water they get. Keep teaching your boy English as learning another language makes the brain flexible. I am learning Japanese and I am 71 years old. I hope it works for me! Christopher: Two things I would do. 1. Slip an aluminized Mylar sheet ( space blanket) between the builders plastic and hoops on the back to reflect the low angle sun back on the plants. 2. Transplant the peppers from the house to the back of the bed between the others. Hurricane Maria may move some warm air your way in October. This will lengthen your season. You could also place some plastic bottles painted black across the back to pick up some heat during the day and releasing it at night.Bert

Remember: He's growing in Norway...warm roots are hard to achieve with Scandinavian weather...a hoophouse and a greenhouse are almost a necessity to grow quality produce. If growing outside...once again warm roots are necessary...laying black 6 mil plastic down around plant rows, even in raised beds is a great way to achieve good produce for Scandinavian climates. Good jod. Here in utah i start my peppers in Dec/Jan inn doors just so i can get a head start and some of the habaneros i keed all year round. in the winter they go in to the green house with a don't heat but i do cover them with a concrete blanket I have to put on everyday and every morning take it off seems like a lot of work but it's worth it.
Great design. By manipulating the bacterial/fungal activity at root level, cold temps and sunlight become less of a factor. Also, chili peppers are tropical and need bacteria/fungus that thrive in hot temps.

Haha i also tried a few peppers outside (west Norway): so tiny and no fruit, but the rainforest i got from you is in the greenhouse and is humongous with lots of pepper and finaly starting to ripen.

Nice hoop house. Beautiful carrots.i grow the rainbow mix and think they are all sweet when you pick them. All carrots lose their sweetness as they age, whether just picked or held in some type of storage.

Christopher why don't you employ the square foot gardening method to that raised bed, that way you can grow lots of different things and a lot more of them than normal spacing getting continued harvests of things right throughout the growing season.
Would it help if the pipe is longer to raise the top a foot or two for grawing taller plants like tomatoes. You did an excellent job of putting the hoop house and video together. thank you for sharing.
That was my concern, as well as fitting it with a rough temperature control system using a 12V and a thermistor circuit to open ventilation if by chance it gets too hot.

My imagination tells me to create the same thing using a mesh cover. Mobile hoop house on wheels. Take it a step further by designing the hoop cover with solar panels connected to sensors that keep the hoop house warm or cool. The bed of the hoop house rest on a movable platform to dump the soil. I see vegetable hoop houses as the future of Home gardening

With the sad exception of your outdoor peppers, your vegetables look beautiful -- really healthy. By the way, your hoop house might allow you to grow vegetables through the winter. (I'm thinking of the American organic gardener Eliot Coleman, who has videos on RUclips about growing vegetables during winter.)
Thanks for the update, Christopher! Interesting to see what a difference such a simple structure can make :-) Will you use the bed for growing some winter salads, too? Your carrots look great - do you not have problems with carrot fly? It is nr.1 problem in growing carrots here. I tried growing carrots in a double raised bed this year to avoid it (carrot fly is supposed to fly close to the ground) and it helped some but not 100 %. I'm thinking of trying a triple raised bed next year :-) And about language education: my husband is Dutch and I am Czech and our children are bilingual. When they were little, we used to talk in English when we wanted to discuss something without them understanding. Until they told us we needn’t bother anymore - they could understand. It proved to be a great way to stimulate their learning 😊 We still have Norwegian in our back pocket but I think it wouldn't take them long to learn it either - it's so similar to Dutch..
Hi! No, I will not use it to grow in winter time. We don't have any sun this time of the year and a ton of snow hehe. Not had a single problem with the carrots. A raised bed with a hoophouse like i build would be great to keep the flies away, but I would change ut the plastic with fabric. :-) PS, I liked your channel!

smileandlaughs you just need to go in and shake the plant after you see the blooms. Shake them gently whenever you think about it. No stressing about it.

I'm in WA too, LOL, and was thinking the same thing, especially after this past summer, hot weather veg did not like our cool weather one bit.

Oh, I really can't remember. A long time since I built it now. It's 4 meters long and about a meter tall I think.

I'LL BE DARNED! IT'S A MINI-GREENHOUSE. GREAT IDEA! I wonder if a hot water circulation system would allow these plants to grow thru the winter???

Take it a step further by designing the hoop cover with solar panels connected to sensors that keep the hoop house warm or cool. The bed of the hoop house rest on a movable platform to dump the soil. I see vegetable hoop houses as the future of Home gardening

We are a little late to the party. We have built our first hooped gardens... But we're having a hard time finding information on when to open and close the hoop during the summer? What zone are you in and how did you use them for your summer season? I'm in zone 6a. Thank you!!
If you lived in the tropic rainforest, where the bugs are ravenous, and you didn't want them in your hoop area, what would you do differently? And, by the way, do you think you could grow passion fruit in there?
Beautiful carrots! Peppers have done fairly well this year but cool weather crops are pretty hard in zone 8

With the sad exception of your outdoor peppers, your vegetables look beautiful -- really healthy.
By the way, your hoop house might allow you to grow vegetables through the winter. (I'm thinking of the American organic gardener Eliot Coleman, who has videos on RUclips about growing vegetables during winter.)

Christopher Brandsdal There gardener is located in Chicago, USA which can get -10F and he was able to grow in winter without heat.
Thanks for the update, Christopher! Interesting to see what a difference such a simple structure can make :-) Will you use the bed for growing some winter salads, too? Your carrots look great - do you not have problems with carrot fly? It is nr.1 problem in growing carrots here. I tried growing carrots in a double raised bed this year to avoid it (carrot fly is supposed to fly close to the ground) and it helped some but not 100 %. I'm thinking of trying a triple raised bed next year :-) And about language education: my husband is Dutch and I am Czech and our children are bilingual. When they were little, we used to talk in English when we wanted to discuss something without them understanding. Until they told us we needn’t bother anymore - they could understand. It proved to be a great way to stimulate their learning 😊 We still have Norwegian in our back pocket but I think it wouldn't take them long to learn it either - it's so similar to Dutch..
Hi! No, I will not use it to grow in winter time. We don't have any sun this time of the year and a ton of snow hehe. Not had a single problem with the carrots. A raised bed with a hoophouse like i build would be great to keep the flies away, but I would change ut the plastic with fabric. :-) PS, I liked your channel!

Don't leave those carrot greens behind! As beautiful as your carrots are, the more nutrients are in the greens. Eat everything!
You could plant it out with onions, garlic and other bulbs now then compare the harvest to one without a hoop house.

smileandlaughs you just need to go in and shake the plant after you see the blooms. Shake them gently whenever you think about it. No stressing about it.
