How to Make a Dog Drink Water (When He Doesn't Want to)

  • Sometimes your dog won't want to drink water. Whether he's recovering from surgery or just not feeling well, you need to know how to make a dog drink water when he doesn't want to. It sounds simple, but as the old saying goes, you can lead a horse (or dog in this case) to water, but you can't make him drink. Read the full guide here: topdogtips.com/how-to-make-a-...
If you already know the reason for the aversion to drinking water, you just need to find ways to entice your pup to drink. In this situation it is best to only offer small amounts of water at one time. You can increase the quantity as your dog begins to feel better. Drinking too much too quickly could cause your dog to vomit, which will make him even more dehydrated.
"You can also check your dog's gums to see if he is dehydrated. I also demonstrate this procedure in my video guide. Gently press your finger on your dog's gums until the pink color fades. If the gum doesn't pink up immediately, it is a sign that your pet is dehydrated."

I make his dog food homemade so I basically make it into soup and he's staying hydrated but it is SOOO frustrating. He should be drinking much more water since he had kidney stone issues/surgery

Lots of dogs don't drink as much as we *think* they should. Same with people. Animals drink when they're thirsty - and people should too. There's a myth that says, "If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated!" which is pure malarky. Thirst is the body's perfectly healthy way of letting you know it's time to have a drink, and animals respond to thirst - not to magazine articles or advice on social media recommending, "eight 8-oz glasses of water a day." There is ZERO science behind that. I suspect it's something people like to do to "feel healthy" because it's easy - and, of course, drinking water is healthier than drinking soda.

I didn't realize how dehydrated my dog was until she almost died of dehydration and went incontinent. They injected her with water under her skin. She's soooo stubborn. The vet suggested I put some water in her food, and she learned she could let the water fall out while eating, so she won't drink. Then they suggested I put water directly in her mouth with a soft needle they gave me but she protests and freezes and refuses to swallow it. It's getting on my last nerve it's so frustratingly demoralizing. I'm SO frustrated at her. She's costing me so much in vet bills now just because she wants to become a raisin. I'll try the sodium-free broth I already know she doesn't like ice at all. I've even tried warming up her water slightly to body-temp. I'm going nuts she's going to get herself dead. It is irritating that her highness now requires broth to drink her queenly water. Anyway I digress I'm venting now from desperation, thanks for the tip.

@The Matadore i can totally relate! My doggie already has kidney stones.. I tried everything! Maybe you could try it too, hopefully it'll work for your dog..: The Dog Mate fountain or any other pet water fountain.. Also, the Viyo supplements, which are high-quality liquid vitamins which seem to taste amazing and pets adore it.. i add a bit of extra water to it (not much, just a spoon or two..) but sometimes she gets bored of that too.. I walk her on long distances and play with her in the house too so i can make her tired and determined to drink water... sometimes it works, some other times it doesn't.
Mine also would drink if she sees another dog drinking from her bowl, because she's jealous and possessive.. But that can't work often either..

I am extremely concerned for my 11 year old Chihuahua. His behavior has changed drastically to the point where he's starting to defecate on carpet instead of outside or on potty pad, excessive hiding under bed, won't play with his toys without my urging and insists on staring at wall for long periods of time and quite anti-sociable. Bc of all of these behaviors, I believe he's suffering from something more than his tooth decay which is definitely a situation I'm now unfit financially to provide. I'm trying so hard and reaching out for positive feedback as I'm desperately trying to remedy him from his silent suffering which is now quite obvious to me.

I have a 6 lb poodle who has always been scared of her bowl. I have changed many times and lately she has wanted me to actually hold the bowl while she drinks. I keep a water bowl on our patio and she begs to go outside and drink from that bowl but she has not drunk any water, that I have seen, for the last day. She acts fine and runs around, plays, etc. I went home today at lunch and pulled a huge tick off of her head. She rarely has a tick. I wonder if this could be affecting her not drinking. I think it's more behavioral because she is a very jumpy little dog and scared of loud noises, etc. I will try your idea of adding a little low sodium broth, or the syringe. Any more suggestions.

If you know the dog is dying just get it put to sleep. All the starvation dehydration and suffering is pointless. Sometimes you have to learn to stop trying to hold on to something thats ready to let go. My grandma taught me that, she was really pissed off because my family kept taking her to the hospital and she was ready to die because she was tired of being sick and suffering. Dogs seem to know when they are approaching death..starving themselves is not common. I think its their way of speeding up the process of death.

Im on night 2 out of the 7 for my puppies parvo treatment. I thought he was doing well at first but recently the vomitting came to be and he has become worse. I'm following the vets meds and recommendations but I've cubes aren't helping anymore. Flavored water isn't helping anymore. I'm using the syringe with 20cc of peta-lyte every two hours as instructed but it's becoming hard and hard to get him to actually swallow. I just don't know what else to do

Your dog wont like it and will fight you but the biggest thing is to make sure they are hydrated. You will have to do it every 30min :( and if you can take him/her to the vet. They can give you medication and you can treat him/her at home.

@@sadge824 if he/she starts to vomit or have diarrhea then yea its most likely parvo. I really hope your dog makes it. Sending prayers ❤ but if you can, try and take him to the vet. Parvo can last up to 8 years in your backyard and up to 6-7 months in your house. The virus isnt lethal to us. But it is to other dogs. So getting them the shots are really important. And making sure no family member bring their other dogs around unless they have their shots already. Its extremely contagious for them.
