His guard design is the worst possible configuration you could have on a sword. If you do any actual high impact sword fighting that guard will dig into your hands and wrist. Very bad. If anything it should be reversed
I was thinking the same thing. Anyone that is relatively proficient with a rapier would finish him and his student off very quickly. Really any sword with a decent guard. Also his sword blade is too short. From what I have read, these swords were essentially ceremonial. The Chinese straight swords that were meant for combat had wider guards, longer handles and blades. Nice dancing routine but not realistic self defense.
