  • Triumph may now offer a bewildering array of so-called ‘Modern Classics’ motorcycles that fuse traditional style with the latest technology, but Jon Quirk reckons the Bonneville Speed Twin could be the pick of the bunch. A day trip taking in the best B-roads of East Sussex only served to confirm this.

    Just bought one. Only have about 60 miles on it. Mixture of snow and rain right now but when the sun returns I will ride some more. This is the Triumph I waited all my life for. Handles right, sounds right with more power and torque and even looks right as driveway art. Great bike. I like it and got a great buying experience at Select Cycles.

    Just bought one. Traded in my retro style 2024 Honda cb1100
    Got a great deal
    It handles better than I can ride it with more power than I will ever use
    Works good on my favorite curves. Look forward to some drier and warmer weather to take it on s trip to the beach about 200 miles away. It will be a great beach and mountain cruiser. Love that big twin soundtrack roaring the rhythm of the road. Lots of torque.

    Great review. I think you are right about the Speed Twin superseding the Thruxton - as a package, the Speed Twin simply is more user friendly and fun. I would even say that about the Speed Twin with regard to the R Nine T - it just works better as a whole. I suspect the Thruxton won't stay as it is but will benefit from the weight loss the Speed Twin benefited from.

    It's not really a retro... Triumph has never stopped making these kind of bikes! This is just a Triumph motorcycle.

    I sat on this bike. I couldn't believe how comfortable it was. Just perfect. And no, I would never want keyless go on any motorcycle. If a 50k bmw takes 30seconds for thieves to steal, how long will this take?

    As for grab bars for a pillion, I don't think you can get them from Triumph's catalogue. At least you couldn't when I got a Speed Twin back in July 19.
    You can get a luggage rack from TEC bike parts that has a hoop on it, yet to fit my one of these.
    The Speed Twin is an awesome bike, more power and handling than I need or can utilise and it looks wonderful :)
    My main moan is that the fuel tank could have been a couple of litres bigger. At 50 to 55 MPG it has a range of about 160 to 175 miles, so fill ups happen at about the 135 mile mark.

    If it was just for me I’d go for one of these; but for my pillion / partner comfort I’ll stick to the T120.

    • @karlosh2422
      @karlosh2422 5 лет назад +1

      My wife finds our Speed Twin pretty good, but Triumph do need to make a luggage rack and sissy bar. Otherwise yes I can see the T120 is better for pillion.

  • @karlosh2422
    @karlosh2422 5 лет назад +1

    The Triumph after market catalogue for the Speed Twin is currently not that large. No luggage rack, grab rails or sissy bar. It could also do with an easily changeable Thruxton like seat for spirited solo rides.
    Triumph or someone needs to fix those holes in the options catalogue .

    If you were spending your own money which one do you pick the rninet or this speed twin?

    • @JonQuirkUK
      @JonQuirkUK 5 лет назад +2

      Thanks for watching, Roberto! Objectively speaking, the Triumph Speed Twin is the better bike and the best Bonnie, but I personally prefer riding the R nineT. I like the 'character' of the cylinder rock and at 6ft, the geometry feels a little more comfortable for my (admittedly lanky) frame. Hope that helps!

    • @robert.reimon
      @robert.reimon 5 лет назад

      Jon Quirk thanks. And one more question, for commuting everyday what do you think will be better going for the new r1250r or the ninet?
      Any other options you will consider as an all rounder?

    • @progste
      @progste 5 лет назад +2

      It's all down to personal taste, for example I can't stand bmw and their boxer engine so I would go for this or even the z900rs.

    • @barcibus
      @barcibus 4 года назад

      Imo the Speed Twin is a more attractive / classically beautiful bike that also handles better and is more fun to ride.
      The RnineT has more power (but is heavier) and looks more unique / quirky, and has many more customization options. The RnineT is also significantly more expensive than the Speed Twin.
      If I had to choose only one, I'd go with the RnineT (which is exactly what I did); however, I'd love to have an RnineT to customize to the n-th degree.
      Edit: your size may impact which one is more comfortable. Taller folks will prefer the RnineT.

    Gorgeous motorcycle, but once you've ridden bikes with back rests it's hard to go back to a flat bench. Any time you've got a torquey engine, you want a saddle that keeps you firmly in place.

    • @CraigUrbansky
      @CraigUrbansky 5 лет назад +1

      Almost threw myself off my Speed Twin yesterday. Gotta be careful with that much HP/Torque and nothing to grab you but your own two hands.

    • @karlosh2422

      I guess someone will make a bucket seat soon. If you want to pin the throttle it could do with a Thruxton like seat for solo rides.
