    The problem with all these comparisons is that we didn't see the original scene and so can have no idea how accurate the pictures are. I wonder if adding a really good DLSR camera into the mix would give a fixed reference point?

      Max Goodman lol that’s what I was thinking. How do we know how it really looks like lol. That’s why I think the S9 is honest with the pics. Something isn’t right.

    The Best Cameras Rank:
    1. Pixel 2 XL - When you look at the pic at the bar and really look closely, you can see very well its superiority over all the other phones.
    2. Note 8 - A weak mimic of the Pixel, but they mimic the best phone camera.
    3. Iphone X - Right behind the note 8 very close but they still don't get the exposure or colors right.
    4. Galaxy S9 (I own one) - The worst Auto settings out of all, this looks scary but YOU CAN take good pictures, just not in auto mode. The phone just came out and needs a lot of work.

      I definitely thought the iphone was consistently the worst, always blown out and unnatural looking (pretty ironic) and usually the worst at clarity. The S9 moving picture issue is a big problem though. I suspect it's just trying to use the wrong shutter speed for whatever reason. Hopefully can be fixed in an update. All of the others have had plenty of time for fixes, so they're going to be about as good as it gets.

    I have 2XL and I had samsung series... bare in mind that 2XL hasn't got pro mode, samsung has. I was dissapointed with the lack of controll of the camera. With samsung s9+ you could easily achieve same colour as Pixel 2XL in post or on pro mode. I am still keeping my 2XL though.

  • @mrmrgaming
    @mrmrgaming 6 лет назад +1

    Had a Iphone 8 plus, great phone (though not a fan of IOS) took amazing photos, but its not great with anything moving (auto)
    I take many photos of young son in our house, I found I had to delete 50% because of blur and focus, he never stays still, even when he does I found I took 2x the amount of shots because I knew many would not be good due to him moving.
    I don't remember doing this so much with my old S8, now today I just got a S9+, just took few quick photos of son running about the house, 95% came out with little blur and mostly in focus as how I remember the S8 doing.
    So far loving the S9+ more than the Iphone 8 plus, though the speakers on Iphone 8 plus were far better than the S9+, like night and day different, I will miss those.

    Do you have a link to download the untouched images from each phone?
    All this nitpicking I see on youtube is just comparing exposure and white balance. But whenever I compare the actual image files, I tend to see the most dynamic range I've ever seen on a phone in the GS9 images. You just can't recover as much with the Pixel and iPhone images in both shadows and highlights. Also, the GS9 images are more forgiving when you adjust the white balance.
    I mean, we _are_ being nitpicky, right? Lets really compare how much "data" each camera system can produce and retain in JPEGs.

    • @domzjb5053
      @domzjb5053 6 лет назад

      Aw Snap the gs9 does have better dynamic range, but the average user doesn't notice it unless they zoom the image in and realize it's preserved

    • @2006lilmoe
      @2006lilmoe 6 лет назад

      Domz JB
      Again, you're mistaking dynamic range with exposure and color balance.

    • @benjmiester
      @benjmiester 6 лет назад

      In Jerome Ortega's tests, he always crops in to check out fine detail. On that, you're right, the S9 tends to be sharper than anything else especially in night images because that 1.5 aperature just plain beats everything else. It lets in more light. That said, if you have to zoom in to see if a picture is better... is it really better? By that I mean it only really makes sense to judge it based on how it would be viewed. I guess that's just one of those to each his own scenarios ya know.

    • @prasenjitsarkar4390
      @prasenjitsarkar4390 6 лет назад +2

      Aw Snap
      S9 has better dynamic range, really dude!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
      U know what, Shadow brightning mode can't be considered as dynamic range,
      S9 are prone to blown out the highlights, s9 has one the most aggressive noise reduction process which make object smooth, blurry and less detailed.even in low light pixel 2 multilayer HDR makes images more noisy; still, the details of various objects can be seen where in s9 every thing look so clean like a indistinct oil printing.
      S9 might have a relatively good camera yet it's certainly not the best.

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh 6 лет назад

      Dynamic range is the range between brightest and darkest. For example, being able to see out of the windows while keeping ability to see colours and textures in the shadows. Lower dynamic range usually means the camera will choose between clipped highlights or will preserve highlights at cost of making shadows mostly black silhouette. Which can be artistic, but sometimes you want the sunset _and_ the rest of the world :)

    the last photo , it almost looks like the s9 is focusing on the roof , the note too ? if you look in the distance , it appears you can almost read the writing on the framed sign on the wall , it does seem both the galaxys are more focused higher or that is just the way they frame the shot ??? it would be interesting to see a bunch more photos in the pub scene to see if the blur thing was a one off or if it is indeed something to look at in an update ?
    Nice effort in the comparison anyway , but i do think you need more shots though to make a definite conclusion .

    Wow, great comparison David! The Pixel 2 XL pretty much killled it. The Samsung 9 reminds me a lot of the quality I get from my two and a half year old Lumia 950, especially the pic in the bar and the way it pulls in light when it's not necessary in auto mode. It's a shame that phone (Pixel 2 XL) has so many user issues.

      I'm glad the new one is good! I'm seriously considering getting the Pixel2 XL. I was scared away at first because of some of the early reviews. The weird green edges on the screen was one problem and there were other issues too, but I can't remember exactly what they were at the moment. I think there was something with the OS not being installed in shipped units...

      I have a Pixel 2. Slight green tinge if you look at the screen on a big angle, but nothing I really notice in day to day use. What is annoying is the black crush that happens in the OLED. Coming from a Sony phone, the screen isn't as good of course.

    It's safe to assume that, if you decide to pick up a 2XL right now, even though it's 2017 device, you're not gonna be disappointed one bit. This phone is a beast when it comes to the software experience, and it still outperforms pretty much all the phones, 2018 devices included. Google's doing a great job and there's only room for improvement ahead.

  • @AWA-jv6rt

    that motion blur is an issue, I have an s7 and it does that too as well. I think it is a problem with the dual pixel technology. It focuses super fast and when you click to capture even a slight shiver of your hand makes moving things comes out blurry. Obviously all of these photos were not taken at the same time, these people are not moving at the same time when you click with a different phone maybe that is why the note 8 didn't do it!

  • @wayne891004

    2nd photos from Pixel.. changed to darker colour just to show more background details.. but losing the fact that actually a very bright area. Very common technique from Pixel, but is out from reality and too much post processing. Not sure why everyone praise it.

    • @yawowusu8543

      wayne lau Because it looks good to the eye for most people.

    • @wayne891004
      @wayne891004 6 лет назад

      Yaw so it doesn't matter bright or dark.. the result is going to be the same. Like a scanner scan all details.. not real photography?

    • @yawowusu8543
      @yawowusu8543 6 лет назад

      wayne lau Yes Wayne, using phone camera cannot compare to real photography. People who take most of these pictures with phones edit them after, in order to make it look good and pleasing to their eyes. The Pixel is just trying to do that job of enhancement they would have done, for them so as to assist them. Thus they can post whatever picture they took straight to their social media platforms without worrying about editing or filters. Remember, the aim of the Pixel phone is to assist you as much as it can in every way.

    • @wayne891004
      @wayne891004 6 лет назад +1

      Yaw is that case... That should be editing power comparison instead of camera comparison... As i believe the rest can edit into that style as well.

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh 6 лет назад

      wayne lau but guess how many people will do that? Not many. Dynamic range is a big part of what looks nice in a lot of photos. The issue here is the tiny lens and sensor, and then trying to fit all this detail onto the limited dynamic range of current picture formats. What is natural also differs between people. I prefer the better dynamic range, because that's what you see in real life.
      Edit. Re original comment about darkness, just tap to focus and it will expose that area better. It's something anyone can and should do. The Pixel 2 can do blown out windows if you focus on a really dark area :)

The HDR on the Pixel is just phenomenal for stills but video is average and it always comes out of focus and the pixel and pixel2 don't have the other features to back up the price... Samsung has always had an immense problem with indoor low light and motion. The camera favors a slower shutter speed to allow more light, but the slightest movement results in image destroying blur. It's been the same since the S7 introduced pro mode.

    I might be knit-picking here, but the position of the cameras does make a difference sometimes. My iPhone X consistently blows out backgrounds when there is a lot of light behind a subject, whereas my GS9+ doesn't. I find in most lighting situations, the GS9+ does a better job than the X, especially with the sharpness (the iPhone tents to smooth things out too much).

    Pixel 2 XL still the better camera phone on the market. If any tech guy says otherwise. They are being paid by that company to say good things about their phone. I think DXO was paid by Samsung to give the S9 a better score than the pixel

      @fightnight14 6 лет назад

      george clark
      No, dXo is right for giving the s9+ a high score on less noise, zoom and bokeh. The overall score is where the problem is since they scored it 1 point higher than the Pixel 2, making it look like its the best smartphone camera ever when in fact its only better in a few certain areas and for that reason I also think they got paid

    • @georgeclark397
      @georgeclark397 6 лет назад

      fightnight14 it's not one picture from the S9 that's better than the Google pixel

    • @georgeclark397
      @georgeclark397 6 лет назад

      fightnight14 pause these photos and really examine them. Background,shadows, details in face. You can't show me one picture the S9 actually won. And I'm suppose to believe DXO wasn't paid by Samsung

      fightnight14 Looks like you guys forgot to consider front camera where S9 beats the shit out of xl.. and btw hence the higher score in DXO...

    iPhone X and pixel 2 are definitely the best cameras. I do like the natural look of the iPhone. Samsung over saturate everything and do not handle light as well.

    It seems the Pixel 2 wins the overall camera comparison, but honestly any of these cameras would be great options. The problem with the Pixel 2 is that it is lacking in other areas. There is obviously no headphone jack, SD card etc, but mostly despressingly the screen is really subpar compared to the S9 and Iphone. Also the overall design aesthetic is lame...I know that might not be important to some, but when you're paying top dollar for a phone, the design and looks matter to many people. Finally I know you get updates on the pixel, but can you really name any break through feature on version "o,p,st" whatever that really is mind blowing? I would probably get the Pixel if I was really into flashing the rom a lot, which I'm not into that much anymore, or if the camera was the only thing that mattered to me. But otherwise I would recommend one of the other phones on this list...
