- Made from copper and glass, this diy bird feeder is squirrel proof! It allows birds to enter to get to the bird seed but prevents squirrel entry. Most small birds can enter holes 1" to 1.5" and squirrels can get into a hole not much smaller than a 2" hole (as you can see in my little test video where I determined the smallest size hole that a squirrel could enter. • Squirrel ● Literally B... )
The squirrel proof bird feeder guards I've seen can be pretty ugly and are not very aesthetic but this bird feeder actually looks elegant and sleek with the patina of the old copper pipe and glass. It's easy to fill and very easy to clean-out. Seed stays dry due to the solar effect of the glass. This squirrel proof bird feeder is see through, so watching birds in your yard will become even more enjoyable and more entertaining as the squirrels attempt to get to the bird seed and fail. I used my new Gopro Session camera and got some pretty interesting shots of the birds as they enter from inside and outside the feeder!!

Although it is aesthetically pleasing, there is a fair amount of unused vertical space. If you wanted to double your capacity, you could silicone in another tray about halfway up.

@@zoeyblouin6527 you would need a wider base than the pole though. I think it is aesthetically appealing in portrait mode and adding another platform is nice but unnecessary. I love it just as it is!

I just built one exactly like this (I had an old 10 gallon fish tank lying around), and built it almost exactly to your specs. The only difference is I DID make it two-tiered, with a shelf of seed and an attached perch in the middle, so there are two trays of seed. It's only been up a week and it's working like a champ. The small birds have finally noticed it and are going inside without fear, and the squirrels just can't access the seed except where they can stick an arm through the holes.They try, but there's nothing they can do - and they give up. Thanks for the suggestion - it was fun to build!

I saw another, similar design to the splendid and attractive one in the video. The squirrels also put their paws into the round discs to retrieve seed. The designer merely emptied the seed container of its contents, placed a tray inside, and filled it with seed. The tray was the same shape but SMALLER than the perimeter of the seed container which created a significant boundary on all sides. The squirrels, who were able to put their paws through the discs, could no longer obtain any bird seed except for the few stray ones left by the birds on the perch.

When I am blessed with a garden, I shall commission you to make me the same. Your design is aesthetically pleasing and practical. The only adjustment necessary is to insert a smaller tray of sufficient depth inside the feeder to create a border around the perimeter. This border will prevent squirrels from putting their paws through the discs to obtain seed. Other suggestions would be hooks to hang fat balls etc. Lovely design.

You could put a second level inside there and have mixed wild bird seed and the black sunflower seeds on separate levels.

Great job! I have to admit that squirrels, resilient problem-solving creatures, can be tenacious in finding ingenious ways to get the food. I built one just similar to yours using a chicken wire with 1-inch diameter. Some big squirrels could get their heads in or maneuver their paws through the grids to pull out bird seeds while the smaller ones could go right through.

have you considered making your feeder a multilevel feeder with a couple more levels above the one you have now? it would then accommodate more birds at the same time and could even be used to present different foods for different guests?

That’s exactly what I was thinking! He definitely needs to patent this design and make at least kits to let all of us enjoy one of our own.
Every other squirrel baffle I’ve seen is clever but ugly.

Looks great but, no drainage. Very interesting video. Would love to try this with Plexiglas so drain holes could be drilled.
Maybe having it set up landscape vs portrait orientation would have made usable perch area for more birds to graze... great idea with the copper pipe sections for access!

Seems that it would be possible to use small cans that cat food comes in -- take out the tops and bottoms of the cans and you have something about the same size as the copper rings you made. What do you think? The individual cans would not be as sturdy, but when they are all glued together, they should be fine.
That's a good idea. As long as the cans are the same diameter that should work. Good luck.
I like this idea. I, also was thinking of pvc instead of copper. Are the Cardinals able to get in to the feeder? I noticed in the video he comes to it but never went in. I have several cardinals and want them to be able to feed. I do not however, like the dozen + grackles, blackbirds and cow birds that are chasing away my little birds since spring is here.
I will be uploading another squirrel proof bird feeder video in about 4 weeks where I use another type of pipe that is a lot less cheaper than copper! I also show why you shouldn't use PVC. Stay tuned!

Tbh I like the last bird feeder a little better in terms of econometrics but the idea and design still remain ideal.

This is a novel design, but the one flaw I see right off is the selection of materials. That plywood will split, crack, warp, and separate quickly out in the rain. The trim wood is not treated either, so it will eventually rot, if not painted or stained. The copper pipe is nice but rather pricey, as someone already mentioned, PVC could have been used instead. Other than that, it's good!
Just so ya know I did treat the wood. If you watch the video again you'll notice that all of the wood is a pail green colour. If you use PVC the squirrels will just chew right through it. You can use any metal you like with a 1.5" ID.
How do you keep it from cooking the birds in the summer? It’s got to get hot with the glass but I absolutely love the concept!

I'm working on a jail house type design with stainless steel bars that the squirrels can't get through but the birds can. Experimenting starts soon to see what distance the bars need to be apart to prevent entry from squirrels. If it's a fail, it will still make an interesting video! Thanks!

He has another video where he tortures a squirrel. 10 minutes in it’s very painful to watch as the terrified squirrel panics. Unless you hate squirrels... just a thought 💭How about feeding both birds and squirrels especially during winter when both are hungry.

where do you find 1.5" copper pipe?
Maybe have some levels inside the tank to fill some of that empty space?

I really like this idea a lot. But I also have a concern about the small amount of bird seed given the height of the feeder. I would be interested in glass in the front, allowing more bird feed to be available for the birds to eat.

Maybe a second floor with corners of water, perhaps even at an angle so you could have water storage that slides down into the corners? Also, maybe make it accessible both front and back, the lil’ birdies were having a bit of trouble when the pigeon was taking up the entrance.
The rings we used did not hold up, so we replaced with plexi glass and drilled out holes for songbirds. WORKS FANTASTICALLY!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this feeder. I would like to make a couple for our seniors home. They are avid bird watchers. Do you possible have written instructions? I would be more than willing to pay for a set of plans. I recently made a free Library for the seniors and I am looking for something a little more challenging. This is just beautiful.
This feeder is good and keeps the squirrels out but I found that the birds were not entering on any of the upper part. I am in the midst of making another version due to copper be so expensive. I will be using steel rods and placing them horizontally and spacing them equally apart. I will first do a test to find the perfect distance apart they can be to not allow a squirrel to get past. That should be an interesting video! Then I will do the build. Stay tuned

I have been trying to find the supplies for your original feeder, but can't find any copper pipe that does not cost over a $100 and since I want to make three for my senior bird watchers that due to the Covid 19, have been cooped up in their homes watching more squirrels in their feeders then birds. @@sharonhogg161 Use aluminum tubing instead. It has to be a lot cheaper than copper. You can also price EMT in the home supply electrical department. That's probably even less $.
Thanks Joe, I have been trying to find conduit pipe with the borehole @ 1-1/2" but so far no one in Toronto carries anything that big. I guess I will just have to wait until Chris releases his new video.

What size pipe? Copper DWV thin wall? How about PVC ? You could glue it.
They will chew right through PVC. They are prolific chewers and have to chew for proper teeth health.
I think vertical rectangular shape would be even better to allow the birds in and out more easily and at the same time to prevent the squirrels from getting in.
Just out of curiosity, do you build covered feeders for your larger birds and squirrels, if not for summer use, then for those cold, snow- filled Canadian winters?
Do the seeds get wet when it rains ?
The sun through the glass quickly dries and wetness.
I really thought squirrels would simply grab some seeds "by hand" but watching your other videos I can't help wondering what's wrong with the damn squirrel.
I had them on my "smart" list until today... Any smart reason why they wouldn't grab things??
It's just that they are not able to articulate there hands like we can.

It doesn't get much easier than with silicone. Alignment is easy and exact. Slightly flexible and very strong.

Each time I have cleaned it out, there is no evidence of feces or urine.
metal on top of plywood might make it last longer. Due to weather conditions.
Its pressure treated wood. Weather is not a concern.
Nice but ya better not have Red Squirrels in your area cause they can get in there no problem. I have a small caged feeder for small birds and the square wire holes are a third smaller than your holes, reds get in there, it's a struggle but they get in.
Reminds me of the time years ago when my daughter had a pet Hampster. It got out and we couldn't find it. The next day I did a serious search and moved the dresser and there she was, she had fallen down between the dresser and the wall. She was flat as a pancake. I took her out and laid her flat little body on the bed, and minutes later she morphed into her normal body and was perfectly fine.
