It was true until ai features are being rolled out. Image Denoise with AI feature is GREATLY enhanced by a modern Graphic Card, What takes 5/10 seconds per picture with a rtx3070 is taking up to a minute with the integrated graphic.

Both Lightroom Classic and Photoshop use the GPU rather than CPU if you check the "Performance" settings. Secondly it is better for many of us to use more practical measurements than a benchmarking software. I can see significant improvement in processing times with a better GPU. Going from a 5600XT to a 3060, my results were three times better.

An extremely helpful video for all of us who are wondering if the graphics card really matters in Photoshop!! Years ago Adobe advertised a special "engine" within Photoshop (I think they called it "Mercury") that would harness the GTX 470 to shift some processing loads from the CPU to that graphics card. Photoshop still says it connects to my current GTX 1070ti to aid in processing, but turning that off seems to make no significant difference. Please continue to remember us photographers as you offer such wisdom! Thanks!

Ive got an Intel 12900K and a RTX3050. Because it lacks the flash seen on some gaming rigs, I felt silly having this lower end card paired with that CPU. Now, I see that it is more than I'll ever need for my photo editing. Thanks for calming my "gotta have it" brain. 👍

One notable exception to this will be the use of DXO's Deep PRIME de-noise, which is used in either DXO PureRaw or DXO PhotoLab. It typically shows an increase of at least 2x on a GPU compared to a CPU, even with older mid-range GPU and mid-range CPU. For example, I have a Geforce GTX 1050Ti which processes a large 100MPixel file in 48 seconds, compared to my CPU (Intel I5-10400F - yeah should have got the non-F) taking 112 seconds. Other people show much larger increases, and over 10x increase has been reported.
Other de-noise tech may also use GPU acceleration, not sure about increases they show, maybe there are benchmarks out there.

I believe Capture One and Darktable make use of a dedicated GPU (especially Nvidia), but I don't think Adobe products do the same. There is a big benefit to having a dedicated GPU when using Topaz software. My workflow is a mix of various software for photo and video editing, so I am in the process of building a new i9-12900k system that will have an Nvidia RTX 3080 ti and 64GB of DDR4. One thing to consider is that even if a program can make use of a high-end CPU or graphics card, the code might not be well-optimized and the user experience might fall below expectations.

Agree with this for apps like Capture One. I upgraded to a 3080 from a 3070 and my export time for 200 1DX Mark II CR2 files went from 2 minutes to a 1 minute and 30 seconds. Generating previews also saw a similar speed increase. A fast GPU can really speed things up for workflows that regularly deals with high volumes of RAW files.

I use PS and Camera Raw to edit photos, zero video editing. I did my first ever computer build last year after watching you build an ASUS ProArt B550 system. I used an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, two Sabrent Rockets, and 32GB of RAM. Hardly any GPUs were available and since I only edit photos I didn't think I needed a great one. I installed an Nvidia GeForce GTX1650. The result is that I edit photos blazingly fast. Convert all my NEFs to DNGs, works great. And watching your video putting a system together helped so much.

Another interesting video. If I shoot in RAW I convert to DNG as my old version of Photoshop can't handle Canon CR2 files and the comments about core performance were useful as this is a slow process with lots of files. My basic understanding of GPU's is that they're used for crypto mining, video editing, gaming, driving multiple screens. Anything else? If your CPU has an iGPU how is the workload shared between the iGPU and the GPU? From your previous videos it seems that a good GPU is more important if you edit with DaVinci Resolve as opposed to other programs. Is this right? I'd already figured out that a GPU wasn't really necessary for photo editing, but necessary for video editing. You're making some great videos. From almost zero knowledge of PC's a month or two ago, I've learnt a lot from your channel!

I can console myself a little though, because I am also getting into video production and I think (I hope) the dedicated graphics card I purchased will provide some benefit on that side of things. On the plus side, I have a computer to start building, and no matter how you slice it, that will be fun. Officially Lightroom support GPUs and depends of GPU kinds offers full or partitional acceleration. Its actually helps processing big files for panoramas etc, but at least my graphic card sometimes working unstable and cause Lightroom crash ,so usually I keep "GPU Acceleration" option disabled. Capture One using OpenCL libraries and working stable ,but OpenCL initialization process takes some minuts, starting sometimes with software start and annoying.Agree with you ,for photography fast CPU and more memory is the best option so far.

I added an RTX 2060 S and in Lightroom Preferences I verified that hardware aceleration was now on my RTX and not internal Intel it took only a few minutes to export them. Varify that Hardware Acceleration is sctivated and also the Full Acceleration checkmark below is checked. Then do the Benchmark.

Great video! I have a question: Why haven't you also recommended Workstation Cards to your audience? I lucked out: I do Pro Photography as a second/side job, and more and more video is being demanded say, for Event Photography, so thinking of cards that specialize in rendering, last Jan '21 I bought a PNY (Nvdia) Quadro RTX4000 for what I was crazy-expensive at the time ($900)... since then the 30 series cards have just EXPLODED in price, even my card many places goes for up to $1100 - but that's far less than the top-end Nvdia cards; the difference I spent in maxing out my RAM (128GB Corsair Vengeance RGB RT), and got a 5900X and OC'd it to 4.5Ghz, instead of paying $200 more for the 5950X... The combo easily plays back, edits and renders my Sony A1 8K video files)... I think I have a 'best of both worlds' scenario in buying a less flashy video card and below-the-top processor, but spending more on the ram and getting great performance.

Yeah this video didnt age well. I hate to be the one to say it but sure this used to get us by and used to be pretty good info for old programs, however about 6 months back AI really hit the editing world. Denoising, ai sharpening, virtual blurs, it would take me 20-30 minutes just to render 1 single photo and my pc sounded like it was climbing Mt Everest. I just couldn't feasably maintain deadlines with this huge road block that presented itself. So i broke down, installed an rtx 4080 and now things that require denoise or topaz get blasted out in seconds.
Tldr, if your a photographer that doesnt do a lot of editing, doesnt use a lot of ai programs a gpu is just a super expensive paperweight. But if you do use many of the new ai tools at our disposal, you're hindering your workflow tremensously by not having a good gpu. Ultimately you'll need to decide if its worth it for your specific photography needs, but its no longer a good rule of thumb that gpu's are a waste of money for all of us

To my surprise: Lightroom is actually using the faster 12gb Vram primarily now, instand of the 64gb "normal" ram! Yes, I made some adjustments as gpu Vram is faster than normal ram. Thus, an 6800xt with 16gb Vram should be of advantage. Of, course performance is soo much better, worlds. Cpu often not eve fully used.

A benchmark might not change but having even a low end Quadro or GeForce card enables hardware acceleration in Lightroom Classic that makes a difference when using the program (zooming, making adjustments etc). This doesn’t show up much in a benchmark. I agree that overspending in this area, particularly at the moment, doesn’t make much sense. I went Ryzen 5950x and a Quadro RTX 4000 for Lightroom and it performs brilliantly.

I edit wedding photos. All I need is a picture, which is why I lean towards Intel. Intel integrated graphics works just fine. Fast clock speed is important. I don't think photo editing programs really use more than 8 cores even when exporting a lot of photos. A Threadripper is lighting your money on fire. A Ryzen 5 will work just as well. I have a 10400 and it works just fine, but on my next computer I will use a 13700k. A lot of RAM is important. Technically the software that I use will work with 8gb, but I use 32gb and I am told 64gb is better. No photo editing software is hardware accelerated. Photoshop is the only software that I know of that uses a graphics card for anything at all, and only for a few filters, like 3d letters. If you have a 10 bit monitor you might want a newer Invidia graphics card. I think any RTX graphics card will display 10 bit and 20 series graphics cards are 10 bit capable. Newer Nvidia graphics cards are the only ones that display 10 bit, unless you want to spring for a Quatro. AMD or Intel will not display 10 bit. I do not have a 10 bit monitor, so I do not know for sure.

Does this still hold with the introduction of AI-powered features many of which are done locally - like the Neural Filter Depth Blur, or pretty much all of Topaz AI suite / Luminar AI etc ? I'm looking to get a new desktop and I use these every day

This information is true for the time it was made. But today with so many AI tools being used, a quality GPU is mandatory. I went from an old RX 580 and upgraded to a RX 6700-XT (probably overkill) and omg it was unbelievable how much better the AI performance was. So if you are just doing regular editing, this video is 100% true. But if you use things like Topaz, Generative Fill, LR Denoise AI, etc... then a good to really good GPU will better serve you than a cheap one.

  • @majykyl

With the latest Lightroom you need a grunty GPU to run denoise. 3060Ti is probably a minimum.

Greetings, please make an updated video on this subject. I do believe things have changed with the denoise additions. From my research, it now matters. LR added AI Denoise which takes about 15 mins per image to render. I am using a laptop with I5 (gen 7) with 16g of ram and onboard video. My workflow is dead now.

Thanks for this. I could be wrong, but in August 2023 with LR Denoise AI the situation is drastically different - to a point where an RTX 3080 with 8GB VRAM is supposedly no longer good enough to get very the best performance from Denoise AI. I would get a Mac Mini M2 with 16GB, except I'm annoyed by the slow 256GB SSD. Thanks, Apple, but no.

As far as I know now the two king now of consumer's grade are 12900k and 5950x. Higher more cores = more performance in mult rendering, 12900k has performance core which helps a lot, these are the based on the research I did, it might not be true, but do look for reviews about these

Hello Tech Notice thank you for your video. I do have one question, how come you didn't mention any AMD cards? Are they no good for photo editing with Lightroom Classic? Have you tried Lightroom new Denoise/Enhance feature? I hear that AMD cards are really really good. What is your input, or anyone else's on that for specific LR functions such as Denoise/Enhance? The reason why I ask is because I have a Ryzen 3900X system. I am NOT an expert at these sort of stuff and I need a lot of help please I have no clue as to what I should get if NVIDIA or AMD and which model it is so confusing to me. I need help from people that have actually tested both NVIDIA and AMD I have read a LOT of stuff out there but they are all assumptions and guesses as to which one is best for LR Classic yet no one has real numbers as to which one finishes the job first and in how many seconds. I was looking at a RX6800 but I really don't have a clue what they do or what they don't do when it comes down to this particular LR Classic application. Thank you I will really appreciate the help.
