Engine Malfunction Warning message on dash display. vehicle would intermittently not start.
Brilliant video thank you so much for posting. My daughter has a 2008 c-max diesel with the same symptoms. On close inspection I could see dry solder joints on maybe 50% of the connector pins. Out with the soldering iron to re-solder all of the pins and hey presto it’s now perfect. I am electrically experienced and had no problem doing this repair but would recommend giving the job to an expert if you’re inexperienced in electronic type repairs. Thanks again 👍

Thanks for watching, yes well spotted, i had to go back, remove them again and repair, again, 2nd time was all ok. Never had that issue before. I wasn't even looking at the clocks when driving hence why i missed it.
lol I noticed that too and had to go back to check again after the errors were erased. what probelm had it though
Hi, thanks for the video, had also flahing warning lights and failure messages all over, ford focus 2007, that for sometimes could not start the engine, i did resolder all the pins of the interface connector on the board, seems ok now
I had similar issue in Ford Mondeo 2007 - in my case the radio would randomly turn off and not switch back on again. Turns out the instrument cluster contains the gateway to the multimedia CAN bus. Sure enough, disassembled cluster and the Tyco connector had dry joints on about 50% of the pins. Removed all that nasty lead-free solder and replaced it with 60/40 leaded -no more radio issues.
How much did you cost you to fix mate? I have got same problem started with the radio was not turning on for no reason decided to remove it then a month later car dash was showing system mulfunctional. Am going crazy with it
Exactly the same problem that this Ford Focus model had here in Brazil. The same thing happened with mine.

Hello! Thank you for the video. I believe my 2010 mk2.5 Focus may have the same issue. My car states “engine malfunction” followed by “power steering”, “break light fault”, “acceleration reduced” and the revs on the car go up to 1500 and all dials drop to zero. Eventually it goes away and sometimes doesn’t happen at all, but the messages do not impact the car at all whilst driving.. it seems fine. Would be a shame to dump the car because of this fault 😢. Do you think this sounds similar to the problem in the video? Would love you to fix it for me 😊

I did the resoldering and the engine malfunction message disappeared. But the check engine symbol is still on. Does this mean I have another problem? The car is no longer in limp mode. Do I need to delete the fault codes or something after doing the repair to get rid of the check engine symbol?

Great video! I'm having the "engine failure" message occasionally on a diesel version, the message triggers the car going into limp mode, turning off/turning on engine (while driving!) usually fixes the issue but I'm afraid that won't work for ever, do you think that repair would do the trick? I must say the car works perfectly beside these very occasional mishaps... Thanks again for sharing

4 days ago, my fuel guage in my 2011 Ford cmax diesel 1.6 would read empty when I turned the lights on, when I turn them off, the fuel guage reads proper readings. Then 2 days later, I started getting engine fault, service required.
The engine also started to misfire and was very jumpy. When I turned the car off then back on, the fault would go away. 2 days later, it started again then went away as soon as I turned the car back on. I wonder if I have a cluster problem too. Also, what happened to the speedometer on your repair, it loomed like it was stuck on 30 mph, was there a fault with it?

Great video.. I have the same problem and tried it, but I didn’t use a scanner to reset the codes.
However, my gas pedal doesn’t seem to work now and the screen still says ‘Engine malfunction’.
Do you think this is happening because I didn’t reset codes?

hi i have a similar sort of problem i have a 2008 focus 1.6 zetec which the engine manlfuntion light comes on only when i start driving. when i pull away the warning comes on now and then and the engine revs go up to around 1500 revs i then turn it off restart it and the warning goes out and the car drives fine i was told about this issue you have explained but a garage i used said the fault came up on there diagnostics that there was a fault with the ecu thought i,d share this with you incase someone has the same experience

Hi Adam, I have got similar problems on my Ford Focus. Getting same message on my dash, problem started with the radio as it wasn’t turning on for no reason then once i got it removed this message started to show up on my dash. Sometimes car won’t start until i slap on top of the dash that would start. Where are you based mate? And how much it would cost to fix?

When i turn my headligjts on, my fuel guage goes to zero although i have fuel in the car. When i turn the lights off, the fuel guage is fine. After driving a while the car thinks i have no fuel and it says i need to service the car and the engine has a fault. I took the cluster out and checked the solder, all good but still a problem, any ideas? When i turn the car off after it stops working and back on again, its fine then it all happens all over again
Hi thanks for watching. You can't check the solder visually, if there are cracks they won't be visible to the human eye. I would say cluster needs repairing potentially.
@adamautomotive hello, I have since fixed this issue. I tried everything, removed the cluster, re soldered it, although I couldn't see any damage, removed the headlights and switches to see if there was a problem, but there wasn't. In the end I just removed the positive wire from the battery, drained out any voltage from the ecu and all circuits, left it for 5 mins unconnected. Re-connected it all and after resetting the car, everything was fine. My fuel guage now works with the lights on. It must have been some sort of glitch in the ecu. It's been fine ever since and that was 8 days ago.
I have ford Mondeo mk3 2003 speedometer not working abs and handbrake light on can fix it with soldering.

Hi I’ve got a similar problem with my 10 plate Ford kuga fault code u1900 can communication bus receive error
Had the cluster repaired but still showing the same error
Check the BCM for water ingress but all clear
Car starts and drives but doesn’t lock properly the led screen in the dash is always on too
Any ideas where I should turn next

Hi, thank you for this. I have a 2010 Kuga with the same cluster. Stopped one day, lights all on, no response from start button. Had a friend collect it, changed battery and new earth straps. Starts and runs fine, but fuel gauge still tempremental, engine management light always on but no faults? Today plugged in, airfow meter needs replacing, reduced acceleration coming up. Phew! Do you think the reduced acceleration light is down to the airflow meter? Car runs fine? And all the other stuff, cluster resolder? Bit long winded sorry. Wgere are you based and what is cost of the resolder if delivered to you? Thanks, ian

Hello mate ive got a 2010 s-max the petrol gauge and temp gauge sometimes don't work car wont crank and the radio has gone off and the back driver's door doesn't lock all of a sudden do you think the cluster is at fault

I forgot to ask, what kind of "cleaner" is appropriate for contacts ? I have a contact cleaner spray can, that would do I guess?
I'm trying not to be sarcastic here, but yes, the clues in the name. Contact cleaner spray is more than appropriate for cleaning contacts.
I'm a decent self taught mechanic, but a bit clueless about how to handle circuit boards and I thought maybe some sort of solvent had to be used for a more thorough cleaning job... Thanks for taking the time to respond anyways.
I did think you may have been over cautious when asking that which is only a good thing so please forgive me for being slightly sarcastic. Best way to approach electronic repairs.

If u go "messages" it will appear....i reset ut brake and gas but keeps do it and going in limp mode... what to do?
Get a proper diagnosis, that's always best.
@@adamautomotive hello!i did visit mechanic...he told me the diagnosis point turbo and some mechanism in it..not so expensive...he check it and all was just perfect..he cleaned the sensor (as i understand)and all good for a 1000kml... suddenly again "engine malfunction"..i switch on and off and all good....is very annoying and stressful... what to do if i go again big yrip to be sure?

Hi Ive got a focus mk2 2007 the battery goes flat in about two days all lights on dash board work ok know warning lights and codes any ideas out there thanks for any help.
Hi thanks for watching is the alternator putting out correct voltage? 13.5 volts minimum under load if its ok. Might be bad battery too. Or just a drain somewhere.
Btw did the car shown in the video go into limp mode when the failure message came on? I mean can the dashboard PCB failure trigger limp mode?
Yes they always do or fail to start worst case scenario.
