My son is a big Tool fan. He grew up hearing Zeppelin playing all the time at home. When Tool redone this song he seemed to pay more attention to Zeppelin. One day he had a friend over and I had Zep playing. I heard him tell his friend....this is the original No Quaker. And don't tell mom but Jimmy Page is a Badass on the guitar. Lol

The MSG 1973 performance is the definitive live version of NO QUARTER. Filmed with a camera crew for a major motion picture called THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. That's the one to watch.
    By the way,
The 28-minute version of DAZED AND CONFUSED from the same concert & movie is the greatest rock performance ever captured on film.

About Medieval times & battles, No Quarter means showing no mercy. Yes the live version from Madison Square Gardens (1973) is so amazing. Any lives you can see from that concert are the best, since their movie was filmed from the 3 concert night there. Knebworth concerts the K is silent, are great for lives for later albums. Make sure you check out the lives too, because they are actually far better then studio versions. Thank you again.

    About the phrase "No Quarter".
It is military jargon (very old)
    "Quarter" is "surrender".
To ask for Quarter is to surrender to your enemy.
To give Quarter is to accept your enemy's surrender.
Thus, a general might announce before a battle:
"We will ask no quarter, we will give no quarter"
This is telling his troops that this is a battle to the last man, no surrender by either side.

The term "no quarter" is a military term. Soldiers and Officers live in their "Quarters" in their Barracks, so "give No Quarter" was an order to give no shelter ie take no prisoners. Eventually this became a war crime. If someone surrenders you have to take them prisoner and give them shelter, food and medical care.
In this song, it's the "Dark lord" or the evil one, and those carrying the news, know "no quarter" will be given and so none is asked for.

If you watch the live from MSG 73, just be aware that the video contains an extended “fantasy sequence” that shows Robert as a knight saving a “captive “princess”. Only live other than that would be Earls Court 1975, Knebworth 1979 and Celebration Day 2007. I’m partial to 2007, but if you don’t mind the fantasy sequence, then 1973 is excellent.

My young friend, I hope you listen to Led Zeppelin for as many years and even more! Take care of yourself! 🙏 (Maurice from France) PS: @13terapyn informed me that the term "boy" is not appropriate to call a black man in the United States and Canada... I sincerely hope I have not offended you. Here in France we say that often, (mon garçon) (my boy) it's more of a mark of affection, regardless of skin color. I have noted and understood my mistake and I apologize to you because I really have no unhealthy intentions.

In the US & Canada, "Boy," in reference to Black males, is considered bad form. And for good reason. It's a derogatory term that was/is used to demean and dehumanize. "My friend" would be an appropriate way to address our good friend Dreeezy here. Cheers

"No Quater" means the same as "Take no Prisoners".
Way way back in the day, in warfare, giving "quarter" meant that you would take prisoners and give them food and shelter until a prisoner exchange was arranged.
Thus if you stated that "no quarter will be given", it meant that you would not be taking prisoners, therefore it would be a fight to the death.
"Asking no quarter" would typically mean the odds are against you, but you aren't going to ask for any mercy, it's a fight to the death, you bastards!

There shouldn't be too much discussion about 'which' videos to use. LZ, in the giant form of Peter Grant, their manager was VERY controlling of what material was put out. Not for his own benefit, like many managers of the past, but for the benefit of the band itself, of which he was almost a fifth, non-musical member. There are 'videos' like this, where the studio recording is played, with a montage collection of stock images shown over the top; or, there are the videos of their live concerts. They were VERY strictly controlled. People even now get blocked on YT for just showing the full video on their channel.
Back in the day, there just wasn't the technology to turn up at the gig & make your own video and then distribute it. No iPads, no phonecams, no social media. Even home cine cameras would get confiscated at the doors. In their VERY early days, they went out for a few trial gigs, mostly on the continent of Europe, & TV shows, basically as the 'New Yardbirds'. When they started, the technology didn't even really exist to have the giant screens we are so used to now, so filming live concerts wasn't the norm. I first experienced them at large festivals in the mid-late 70s.
Pretty much all of the live footage available was put out on a 2 dvd package that you can still find. It basically features selected tracks from; Royal Albert Hall [RAH] 1970, Madison Square Gardens [MSQ] 1973, Earls Court 1975 & Knebworth 1979. If you find a 'live' performance, it is almost dead cert to be one of the cuts from that.
