I lived in Utah for five years while my husband was getting his PhD. We made a few friends who either were active in the LDS church or were former LDS. They confirmed about the butt sex being a very common loophole. They also tend to get married younger than non-LDS people and get married very quickly (like less than six months after they first start dating). So many undergrads, aged 18-22, were getting married. It was wild.
THANK YOU for addressing purity culture. Just acting like sex doesnt exist is so dangerous and wrong. And you're spot on with the shame aspect attached.
That story about Liberty University. So much for liberty and freedom. The hypocrisy is unreal.
I could go on for ages about my issues with MegaChurches and prosperity gospel, but I love to hear that someone else agrees with me about the terrible architecture they build. You have so much money (that you colllected unethically) and yet you make this weirdly "if an NFT was a building" church...
This was my favorite episode, because everything you said is accurate.
In Oklahoma, purity rings were definitely a mainstay in evangelical culture. The hypocrisy was all of the loopholes people would use to justify behavior deemed “improper,” specifically: anal and oral. At that point, it’s just psychological gymnastics to justify behavior.
It’s interesting those who are the most self-righteous and dogmatic in telling OTHERS what to do, e.g., Carl Lentz from Hillsong, Josh Duggar, Jerry Falwell, are the ones who have the most warped and deviant behavior! That’s how it always is! It goes to show you repression and guilt only lead to perverse fetishes OR in an effort to remain “pure” they get married at 18 for the physical purpose of being “allowed” to have sex.
The people that grow up in this culture are honestly being subjected to child abuse. Someone who chooses it as an adult is mistaking emotional manipulation for a movement of God.

My mother, who I can honestly say never liked me very much, would revert to baby talk any time she tried to compliment me or express a positive emotion she allegedly had. I gag thinking about it. BTW, I was in Houston for that hurricane and it is true that the Osteens did almost zero to help the community.

When I met my ex boyfriend he told me he was a virgin. I asked him this question because I could tell that he’s really nervous around me and very inexperienced. I was not looking for a virgin at all! But I later found out he was not a virgin, and in fact you slept with a married woman before me. I always thought it was very odd that he had lied about that.

yes about the mega churches 💀 I agreed to go to my husband’s family’s church 2 times a year, and every time I go I laugh because they have a whole rock band, donuts, and they even have their own merch. It feels so disingenuous lmao

Okay I have a story to go with this week's narrative!! 15 yrs ago David Lipscomb university a Christian university out in Nashville, TN now just called Lipscomb - there was a mandatory chapel, a hand book to abide by, a curfew of 9pm we were not allowed to have men in our dorms, we could have them in the community common area (very front lounge/game area of the building which was blocked out of our actual dorms) only during certain hours. The men had to go back to their dorm after the "visiting" hours were over (Was no coed dorms). No PDA in public. No alcohol on campus, an RA supervisor would make rounds to make sure u were in bed for curfew and nothing "not allowed" was found ie alochol, drugs, men LOL. We were not allowed to spend the night anywhere without parental sign off (even though we were 18+ adult) and it could get in trouble if they found out it was at a boys house. I had a supervisor called my parents in Texas to find out if it was okay that I was sleeping at my boyfriend's mom's house (who was a second mom to me) and they were not happy about it when my parents said it was fine. Had to even call and interview my bfs mom lol it was hilarious. Ontop of that our all girl dorms were set up where it would be 4 rooms with a little living room area per section so it was like little mini apts basically; so we called our roommates "sweetmates" not sure why but that's what they were called. So max was 8 girls (2 per room) ours wasn't maxed so I had a private room, and another girl (the one that got in trouble), then 2 rooms with 4 girls. I had one roommate next door to me that got kicked out of the dorms and I was interviewed along with my other 3 roommates bc I guess one catty girl got pissed off at her for being open about her sexuality (she was bi) and got into her stuff and found dildos after she asked the girls if they used a vibrator bc she had one. This roommate told the front supervisor "RA" of the "situation." So then they had to "investigate" the poor girls room, take them away, expell her, and before all that interview the roommates individually to find out if she was doing anything "inappropriate" - I couldn't believe it the poor girl. When they interviewed me I was like she's really nice I don't have an issue with her, what's going on? And it was all secretive like she hurt someone...then the RA said she had "sex toys" had I seen them and I was like huh? No. And was like why are we whispering? Lol - like it was honestly so scary to be interviewed in this weird office lol obviously then I asked roommates after I was interviewed what was going on and it was a ploy to get back at her bc they didn't "like her being weird" 🙄 needless to say I watched my back after that and didn't share anything bc I'm over here going to my boyfriend's having sex like a normal college student 😂😂😂😂 - here's also another kicker two of these women now are loaded, still with the same men they were dating way back then with their "fairytale" purity rings and making lots of money in Nashville where their husbands are well-off business uptight men, just popping out babies left and right 🙄

Ohhhh it's not just controlling fathers. That's just too easy low hanging fruit. The worst insane parent I ever saw was a high school friend's mother. They went to a ridiculous fire and damnation church converted from a warehouse. The mother kicked her daughter out after discovering she wasn't a virgin. Wasn't me. I liked her but way too much drama.

Recovering from being raised Jehovah's Witness here and, yep, when you're on a date (even if you're 50) you must ALWAYS have a chaperone and never be alone. I made a break for it when I moved away for college and moved in with my boyfriend. My family was like, "You're living in SIN" nonstop and pressured me into marriage as a teenager. It's worked out, but Jesus H don't do that to your children.

I live near an evangelical church and those people are some of the most annoying neighbors. We will intentionally stay upstairs most of the day so we can’t hear them knocking on the door every week. Leave me alone good lord!
