Regarding Lincoln Center: I talked with someone on the ship (I was on the late January trip to the ABC islands on the Rotterdam) who said they were negotiating with Lincoln Center to bring it back. We shall see what happens.
Holland America Line is elevating its partnership with Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and taking those shows to the main stage. The program will evolve from a quartet on several ships to a traveling ensemble that will perform on a rotating basis in World Stages on all ships. World Stage is Holland America Line’s main theater; on Pinnacle Class ships the venue seats more than 700 guests and features a two-story, panoramic LED screen. Holland America Line is excited to be working with Shanta Thake, Lincoln Center’s chief artistic officer, on the new vision for this program, which is still under development and will roll out this summer. The musicians who will be a part of this new program remain the highest caliber of talent and will be exhilarating to watch in the larger venue.
Great to see another video from you. Nice that you incluided a list of things that stay the same along with the changes. Very much looking forward to my first Holland America cruise in May.
Yay!!! So glad that you liked the video! Where are you heading on your May cruise? P.S. I'd love, love, love it if you subscribe to my channel! www.youtube.com/@cruisetipswithchristina?sub_confirmation=1
Great video Christina! Connie & I were said to see that Lincoln Center went away. We really enjoyed it when we sailed on the Nieuw Statendam in 2019. We were on a HAL cruise earlier this year and noticed many of the changes you mentioned. The pop-up sections in the Lido buffet were great! Plus the cruise we were on had 3 chocolate extravaganzas (it was a really long cruise) that had all kinds of cake, chocolates, etc. We agree that the service on HAL is top notch - all the crew has been amazing. We have more HAL cruises booked.
Was this for the open dining or assigned dining? I didn't notice any differences in assigned dining for dinner, but I did notice it being slower for breakfast in the MDR. Thank you for the comment!! 🙂
Just saw your blog and subscribed. I saw you and your mother on 2 different cruises in the last 5 months. Glad to see you like to dance and enjoy the music. I think that brings first hand experience to all of us. Thank you!
Yay!!! Thank you for subscribing (make sure to subscribe to RUclips) and I'm so glad you saw my mom and me!! Yes...we love to dance the night away!! 💃🕺 When is your next cruise? My mom is leaving for one in two weeks...but I told her I needed a break! (plus...I'm not retired. LOL)
Since my first cruise with HAL through the Panama Canal at the end of 2024, I found out that they now have “Starlink” on all ships. This is a big improvement from what I experienced only a few months ago. HAL had a press release where it mentioned that they now can connect to shoreside/dock power so they don’t have to run their engines at a port for power.
I didn't know about the part of connecting to shoreside/dock power. That's cool!! Thank you for sharing. And totally agree - the Starlink on all the ships is a HUGE improvement!!! What did you think of the Panama Canal cruise? Most people LOVE it, but my mom honestly didn't 😃
@@cruisetipswithchristina I sailed on the Eurodam 10-12-23 to 10-28-23, my first HAL cruise. I convinced my best friend Geraldo to try it after he lost his wife to leukemia. The seventeen day cruise had three missed or changed ports causing a chaotic mess with the excursions. We had unseasonably hot weather most of the trip, with high 90’s to 100+ degree weather after the first two days. After the last show of each night I would get a late night snack at the pizza palace and it was over 90 degrees. I booked a retreat cabana since we both had inside cabins and could use this as a nice way to see the Panama Canal crossing. Unfortunately with such high temperatures they were unusable as the air was very still and it was hotter in there. It was definitely a bucket list trip that I am glad to have experienced, but it was difficult with the high heat on a long cruise. We also had wave of sickness hit us mid cruise, you would always hear various degrees of coughing everywhere you went. Many neighbors would not see the ship’s doctor fearing being confined to an inside cabin and missing the transit. We still liked the ship but it was challenging. I agree with you that the Orange party wasn’t that big of a deal.
Thanks again. The 2 big things for me are the private dining room and advance embarkation since I understand the vancouver facility is a long process. Thanks for the response and keep those great videos coming!
Yes it's Dutch food not Danish. BTW Holland America is bringing out new show productions already. Not everyone is retired on HAL. On our cruise from Santiago to Buenos Aires we could stop looking at the gorgeous scenery while others traveling on our floor were in the Neptune lounge checking in to work and directing staff. My husband still works but took vacation leave. My sister still works. Not everyone is retired on HAL. We had a family reunion of over 30 people in our party and 80% of us still worked then. We had family members in their 20s and 30s and 40s as well as their parents. You will see more children during school holidays, the summer and around Christmas when HAL allows children 17 and under travel free. If you travel to the Caribbean or shorter trips to Nexico you may find more children on board vs unique ports like the Dalmatian coast with Albania. Kudos to you trying to get info out. I agree food on Holland America is excellent. Service is by far superior to other lines we've been on. Holland America is a traditional Cruise Ship experience. For Las Vegas or an Amusement Park Go Carts roar coaster or zip lining this is not the cruise for you.
I'm disappointed about Lincoln Center Stage. I'm a classical musician and was really looking forward that. Not extending the contract means prices went up. Such a shame.
HAL is Dutch, not Danish. Also, they were unable to come to an agreement with Lincoln Center out of New York to bring the musicians back on board. Sadly, many cruise lines are charging extra for certain things like fillet, lobster and so on. But on the other hand it is available every night and it’s a great way to use On Board Credit. I agree with the Step One Dancers. My husband says he could get up and do most shows. Thanks for a great update.
I know 🤣🤣🤣Maybe I was just thinking about Danish desserts. That's a great point that you can use your onboard credit to buy steak/lobster....GREAT suggestion!!! I'd love to see your husband perform! I bet if Holland America did a talent show of some sort for passengers and/or the crew it would be GREAT!!
My wife and I don't drink a lot of alcoholic drinks. We drink mostly sodas, coffees and juices. What is the charge for sodas, regular coffee and juices other than at breakfast?
Regular coffee and juice (orange juice, prune juice, apple juice) is free. For the sodas...I'd have to look at the menus. It might be $3? $4? I'd have to check!
What a bummer!!! The good news is that the Christmas cruises are still fun and enjoyable...and they will decorate the ship for the holidays and have special events/shows for Christmas. I heard they are bringing Lincoln Center back (or working on a new contract), but who knows if that is true and/or when it will happen.
I cruised the Eurodam in December and that is when they discontinued the BB. king band they were not the best version I have heard.they replaced it with Rollingstones
Thank you so much for sharing!! On many of the older ships (if not all) without the separate Rolling Stone Rock Room, they have done that. What did you think of the band? Did you like it? I personally like both bands!! But for BB King it really does depend on the band and the lead singer 😊
yes I agree I've seen really good bb king bands on the konningsdam and new Amsterdam but the ones I saw on the Eurodam were not, apparently holland agreed the rolling stone band was very good@@cruisetipswithchristina
We were on Hal back in April or May and I'm pretty certain they had tenderloin, which is a slice from the whole tenderloin after it is roasted, whereas the 'filet' is a slice while it is raw, and then grilled and presented as filet mignon. We were on the final few days of a ship being moved from FLL to Vancouver, but you could board in San Diego, which is what we did.
Hi Christina! Enjoyed this video. I'm recently off the Zaandam for the solar eclipse cruise and confirm many of your comments on 2024 changes. Regarding the full cruises: I agree that the current HAL promos offering free passage for 3rd and 4th contribute but I don't usually see lots of kids on HAL with one exception - Holidays. If you don't want kids around avoid cruises over school holidays and spring breaks. I was on Rotterdam over Xmas in 2022 and it was PACKED with kids. Lincoln Center was my favorite venue and I was pleased that they expanded the performance space to 2 levels on the Rotterdam, sharing with BB King. Hopefully it will return. Main Stage entertainment is sorely lacking in quality. I agree there are only so many times you want to see Step One dance do Humanity and Musicology and In Tandem. I have found that the quality of the Cruise Director impacts the Main Stage and general activity level a lot. Cruising Japan on the Maasdam in 2019 we had an individual/author who had extensively lived in Japan who gave lectures every day on the Main Stage. On the Zaandam for the solar eclipse we had Tom Vassos, a super enjoyable astronomy prof from Toronto who also gave frequent Main Stage talks. Both of the talks were always filled to capacity. I also miss America's Test Kitchen in the Wajang Theater. I'm a big fan of MDR meals and remember being surprised in 2016 when a lady at a nearby table requested 3 lobster tails on Gala Night. My mother, a veteran cruiser, said "Whatever the guest wants they get". Not a current policy obviously. I will say that as a solo traveler, I almost always request to be seated with others in the MDR and I have met some, not most, who are working. Particularly on the 10 - 14 day cruises, not the 28+ day cruises.
Very nice video. A retired viewer here, 3 months later who certainly gives you a pass on Dutch vs. Danish. BTW, I had one for breakfast this morning. 🙂 We are on the Nieuw Amersterdam in Alaska in June. Our first HA cruise and your video helped update the research we've done. So thank you. Question, on your cruise, was the Orange Party on a sea day? I'm sure we'll find out when ours is once we're closer to departure, but as you said, their app sucks and getting any kind of planning information more than 30 days in advance is really frustrating. Thanks again!
Thanks so, so much for the nice comment!! In my experience, the Orange Party is on a Sea Day 😃 And if you haven't already, please subscribe to my channel: youtube.com/@cruisetipswithchristina?sub_confirmation=1
You would think in the 21st Century of 2024, there is enough Information Technology expertise for Holland America to get an App that is not aggravating and is of value to the customer.
@@user-DrJoe-Future I agree!!! They just need to hire the right people! I feel like maybe they just don't have a person in charge of technology. Their website and their app need a TON of work. But I also had the same kind of experience when trying to navigate Disney's website...sometimes maybe there are too many cooks in the kitchen or not enough!
@@cruisetipswithchristina Either too many cooks in the Kitchen or no Chief Cook. I was a Senior troubleshooter for the DoD and Military to fix problems like that. They may not have Program Managers (PMs) to lead and drive such an effort. If you don't have the inhouse IT expertise to drive the solution, you have to contract out the task with a competent software application development house. The Cruise Line PM if they have one) would write the system requirements, find a company, hire the company, oversee the development and extensive testing effort, and if all requirements are met, implement the new system and train the customers via videos or other methods.
First time 50s year old cruiser, not retired…going with my 70s yo retired mom. Question about the drink package. What drinks are included with meals. And how much is a soda. Wondering if with my 1 or 2 diet Dr Pepper a day habit, I should get a pkg or just buy by the drink. If that’s even an option.
The only free drinks are water and then the juices at breakfast. I'd have to check...I just asked in my Facebook group if anyone is on a cruise with the current prices! I would assume under $5/drink. It's also good to remember that with the drink package, both you AND your mom would have to buy the package...so most likely better to just buy the Dr. Pepper a la cart.
Hi Christina, It would be nice to know where your cruise went. As I am in Australia not sure if the ship you were on comes here. Also if all ships are the same.
Yes, Holland America ships go to Australia!! And no, not all ships are the same. They are more or less the same...but the newer ships have a little bit more options when it comes to free dining choices (like the Grand Dutch Cafe) and more evening entertainment venues. Was there a particular cruise/itinerary you were looking at? 😃
I was a first time cruiser to SA and Antarctica 2023-24 - the Chocolate Surprise was underwhelming, even without anything to compare it to. you are spot on with everything else. Was on Oosterdam and enjoyed that 22 days. Fab destination.
Thanks for the comment. When they first introduced the new Chocolate Surprise 3-4 years ago it was REALLY underwhelming with rice krispie treats and marshmallows! 🤣 when is your next cruise?
Hi! My husband and I will be doing that same cruise Jan 28 next year. What pointers can you give me, especially for packing because we are spending 3 pre cruise days in Buenos Aries and it will be hot. Thanks in advance.
Im thinking about taking an Alaskan cruise out of Vancouver BC. I'm interested in knowing what upgrades are worth the price, and what's not worth the price or time. Never cruised before.
Yay!!! My #1 recommendation would be to pay for your room. Get a good room on 5th or 6th floor in the middle - and pay the extra for a balcony room. For the other upgrades and things...I think it *really* comes down to whether you plan on drinking 4+ alcoholic beverages a day. If so, you may want to pay for the Have It All Package. Many people like Club Orange, but I don't think it's worth it. The good thing about sailing with Holland America is that their cruises are relaxing and chill...no need to plan ahead a lot! P.S. Hey, another great video. Any comments or changes on club orange. I saw somewhere that the promised club orange bag, prosecco on day 1 and special session with crew are not being provided. Can I get your comments please. Thanks
Ooo!! This is a GREAT question! I'm actually not sure! It could depend on which ship you are on as well.... It looks like you DO get a Club Orange Bag and sparkling wine at dinner for sure. Not sure about the special session with crew...but that's maybe something that's not as special? My very very first cruise was a solo cabin on the Konningsdam immediately after Covid. Being the first cruise of the season out of Vancouver it wasn't at capacity. There were so many things I enjoyed and wanted to experience again. I just feel sad that so many things I enjoyed which attracted me to Holland America in the first place have changed or are no longer. I'd like to have thought I save the best until last, but these many changes have made me wonder if future cruises will compare favourably.
We're taking Holland America Eurodam ,Oct 10th 2024, thru Panama Canal. We are trying to plan our evenings and can't fine anywhere on the website that talks about shows and show time! Is there a link to that? Also, do you make reservations for any of their shows or is it all first come?
Two shows at night...I think it's like 7pm and 9pm. And no reservations...here's another video where I show more of the nightlife you can expect! ruclips.net/video/adIyUGgyS4g/видео.htmlsi=TSEG491kmq8JuKpM
Food = yes!! Alcoholic beverages = No (as it is on most cruise lines) However, basic juices at breakfast and coffee is free If you have any other questions, please let me know! Yes!!! I feel like they have sugar free desserts EVERY NIGHT in the main dining room. And thank you for the compliment! P.S. I'd LOVE it if you subscribe too! youtube.com/@cruisetipswithchristina?sub_confirmation=1
Note that not all ships have the same venues on the Music Walk. We are sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam on our next cruise and it only has Billboard and Rolling Stone. Danish food? Dutch food maybe? I used to haul a suit all over the world only to have it show up crumpled no matter how hard I tried to pack it carefully. Our first cruise after Covid was on Carnival. We found out about the formal night the day before. Since we drove to the port for a change, I could have brought a non-crumpled suit if I had known. Our next one was on NCL and if they had a formal night I didn't know about so I'm not doing that anymore. If Dockers and a Polo aren't good enough, I'll go up to Lido. If you drink, look into the Have it All package which includes wi-fi plus limited (but enough) drinks, excursion credit, one or 2 preferred dining nights (depending on length) and includes some gratuities.
Just a quick question. Just disembarked from the Rotterdam, and first time cruiser on Holland America. Will they send a post-cruise comment e-mail to my booking address? Can't seem to get an answer to this question
Like a survey to get your feedback on the cruise? Yes!!! They will!! Do you plan on cruising with HAL again? Did you like it? Or was it not as you expected? 😃
I find myself back at your site needing serious help booking my next cruise on Holland America. I have numerous codes that will not work. The latest is CBWEEKEND for a $25 deposit, yet is invalid and asks for full payment despite being 180 days out? Am I doing something wrong?
Another great vid, did you say you just got internet access per day, rather than for the whole week? That sounds a better deal than forking out for a week when we can use the local wifi in port....
Yes!!! That is EXACTLY what I did!! We had 3 Sea Days on my last cruise...and I just paid for it on 2 of the days. You can choose what time you start the 24-hour clock ticking too!
Hi Christina for the most part most of things she said are correct but I just finished a legendary cruise on a smaller Holland America ship and since the longer cruise. They will have some things that are completely different such as we were invited to a pop- tamarin chef that was on board that did a demonstration for us some of the differences I’m talking about us like that and there were some others like Craft that they had on board were completely different from other cruises because this was a 28 day cruise so on those cruises, Holland America offers a lot more and they do have a lot of sugar-free desserts so there has been some great changes.
How cool that you were invited to see a pop-up Tamarin chef!! That would be SO cool if they allowed everyone to see that demonstration!!! That's good that the crafts were different...I only see watercolors and painting and origami. What kind of crafts did your 28 day cruise have?
I know this is a repetitive question but still can’t find the day they have the OC party? Based on a 7 day cruise we r at sea Monday, Friday & Saturday! So 2 of those will be the gala nights but when do u think the OC party be? Just want to make sure they’re r not in excision days! Ty so much & enjoy your videos! So informative for first time cruisers!
I think it varies based on the itinerary. I could not find anything online that mentioned a specific day. Most comments did seem to confirm that it did not conflict with Dressy night. Also, it is usually held late (starting between 9p and 10p), so I think you will be safe from it conflicting with any shore excursions. Unless, of course, you are referring to be over tired from a shore excursion and wanting to just get to bed early.
Usually the Orange party is on the last sea day...at least that's how it was on our cruise! So glad that you enjoy the videos! I'd LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it if you subscribe to my channel too! www.youtube.com/@cruisetipswithchristina?sub_confirmation=1
HAL food is the best of the mass market lines. I just learned that there's a secret Asian menu in the MDR if you ask, with dishes that rotate. Whenever nothing is calling my name on the menu, that's going to be my go to. We had cooking classes on our May cruise, but we also had a celebrity shelf onboard, one of only 6 sailings if I remember correctly.
They have a secret Asian menu?!! What?!! That is so, so cool! What kind of food is that? For dinner? And do you mean cooking class? Or cookie class? It would be fun to decorate cookies!! And thanks for the comment...as always I love your comments!!
hello Cristina. we are goiing for the first time one a cruise with HAL. cab you book excursions abroad the ship in a harbour or something. is that cheaper? Theo from Holland
Hi Theo! It's usually cheaper to book excursions NOT through Holland America. We usually take a taxi to the beach and just do that. If you want to book an excursion, I'd check out Trip Advisor or Viator. However...YES - you can book once you are onboard the ship. However, the best excursions sell out ahead of time.
Thank you for the great videos! Good information. I gotta say though, you certainly do not sound like your from Atlanta. I am from Canada and anytime we go that far south, most people have quite the accent! lol
Oh I wouldn't say that at all!!! I think the Music Walk is great. Totally agree that the entertainment is worse (I hope it gets better soon!) I'd say that the staff is AMAZING, the cruise is SO relaxing, the cruises have great itineraries, are affordable, and that the food is good too and the staterooms are clean and pretty nice! 😃
You're done a great job identifying what's going on with HAL recently. . Comments below, pointing out Danish vs Dutch, are focused on minor mistakes rather on any key points. Carnival Corporation will continue to empty our pockets until more competition shows up. For the few of you that don't know, CCL owns HAL !
Awww...thank you so much for the kind note!!! Yes, sometimes I do make minor mistakes with my word choices! Thankfully Holland America is still relatively affordable and a good value vs. other vacation options (like all inclusive resorts) or other cruise lines. 😀😃 You must cruise with HAL a lot then?
Hi Christina. Only four cruises with HAL. All inclusive resorts are better value and here's why: There's A LOT more competition than the three major cruise corporations. No free booze cruise.@@cruisetipswithchristina
We will be on Oosterdam for transatlantic in April …. wondering if we need to download movies or does HAL have a Netflix-type offering? ❤ love your videos!!
Not at all!! They have 100+ videos in the room (they said that...and I counted!) And thank you so, so much for subscribing!! I have like 10 more videos that I need to upload at least...it's just a matter of finding the time!
@cruisetipswithchristina Two things that have lessened our opinion of Holland America lately. HAL has been removing the fabulous BB Kings band from more of its ship - As of April 2024, BB Kings band is now only on three Pinnacle Class ships and not on any of the remaining 8 ships! Also their main stage entertainment is definitely lagging behind comparable cruise lines such as Princess - E.g. the Main Stage entertainment should be more than say a documentary film about HAL's history, or a lone standup comedian in a theater of 800 people
Thank you for sharing!! Do you like the BB Kings Band more than the Rolling Stone Rock Room then? I think they got rid of BB King, but replaced it with Rolling Stone on the non-Pinnacle class ships. Totally agree that the main stage entertainment is LACKING!! I'm so disappointed when they just show a film or do a lecture at night...and on my last cruise one of the comedians was not good at all! 😮😧
@@cruisetipswithchristina Not long ago, most of the HAL ships used to have BOTH BB Kings and the Rolling Stone Rock Room and they filled different niches: BB Kings was R&B, Motown, Pop and Disco with great vocalists and true band instruments, whereas RS Rock Room was classic bar band instruments and lesser vocalists doing classic Rock and Pop/Rock. NOW on all except the 3 Pinnacle class ships, HAL has cut costs by getting rid of the BB Kings band and asking the RS Rock Room band trying to play all those other genres of music - many of which they are just not good at.
Hi Christina, in regards to shows on Holland America, I think I speak for many of the guests I had the pleasure of cruising with when I say they have some guest artists who are truly outstanding for example, they had a Chinese accordionist who absolutely thrilled a full house audience who gave her a well deserved standing ovation, her material and banter was fresh and funny, and the music was beautiful from the classics to pop so please don't paint all the entertainers with the same brush just not fair. Great Video
Good point!! Each ship is slightly different in what they offer and how they do things, and it probably depends on the cruise director and the captain as well. Thank you for pointing this out!
Still have the cooking shows. Still have steak and lobster. Not all HAL ships are like the one you are reporting on. Still have turn down without requesting it. Maybe you should qualify your 11 things to a specific ship, not the entire HAL fleet. One item that IS across the fleet is the internet improvement. They went to Starlink.😮
Which ship and when did you see the cooking shows? I haven't seen that for at least 2 years! I'm curious when you saw the steak and lobster. They had steak when we sailed in October, but no lobster. This January they had neither...unless you paid $25. Yes, they JUST returned to having turn down service without requesting it. A year ago they didn't unless you asked😃
@cruisetipswithchristina I am on the Volendam now. The surf and turf was offered on a gala night. One of several cooking shows is today at 10AM. They have brought on guest chef's to add to the content for the cooking show. They have also had special meals in the pinnacle featuring their specialty items. I realize some these items might not exist on a 7 day cruise. We are on a Grand Voyage. The 3 classical musicians perform 3 times a day on Sea days. Maybe the length of the voyage can determine how many of your 11 things have changed. The wifi is one thing that did change across the whole HAL fleet. It is very much improved.
FYI! Danish refers to the country of Denmark. 🇩🇰 Not the Netherlands 🇳🇱! Holland refers to the country of The Netherlands. Orange refers to The House of Orange 🍊 which is the family name of the Royal family of the Netherlands! Holland America Line’s “Orange Party” started out as a celebration of the King’s birthday, once a year! Now, I guess, they celebrate him every night with a party! The Dutch are super monarchists and love their Royal Family AKA The House of Orange! The British Royal Family are called the House of Windsor! Hope this helps!
Better pastry at Tea times & paid coffee counter. (Celebrity better pastry) Found dressy night nothing interesting only add to our luggage, should come w entertainment. Just diner & back to cabin.
Thanks so much for the comment!! So Celebrity has better pastries? 😃😄 That's too bad that you have dinner and head back to the cabin....you aren't a fan of the live music at night or playing games up by the Explorations Cafe?
It’s all good, Dutch food is a type of food that could possibly be served. I think some people love to correct people & be rude tooooo much. You do a great job 👏
Yes! On ships with only 1 dance floor - that is the case. If you are on one of the Pinnacle Class ships....you still get both options! 😄😃 Do you have an upcoming cruise with HAL anytime soon? 😃
Gala nights used to be so classy. Is it so difficult for folks to wear more dressy attire one night per week? Last time we sat next to a group that were wearing cowboy hats and faded jeans. I know I'm a boomer but I like to dress for dinner.
Oh gosh!!! Maybe where they are from, Cowboy hats and faded jeans are fancy?! Who knows 🤷♀️ I do like to dress up too! Especially since there aren't that many occasions to dress up anymore! But on the other hand...I do like not having to pack a formal dress and heels for each cruise. What do you usually end up wearing for dinner? Do you go all out in a suit or a tux? 😀
@@cruisetipswithchristina When cruising in warmer climes I generally wear a white jacket, a black or mauve shirt with a Italian white tie, pale yellow or off white slacks. My wife wears a long floral dress with tasteful jewelry. One of our joys is Gala night. Alaska lends itself to a sport jacket. Wife dons a skirt with a colorful top. I suspect we know where the party came from but in respect to our southern neighbors I prefer not to say. We are 4 Star Mariners so we get complimentary laundry and pressing. The concierge told us that HA has decided to close an eye because although they have a rule the don't wish to alienate anyone, except for those who wish to dress for dinner on those occasions. Welcome to the new world. Cheers.
@@cruisetipswithchristina Thankyou Christina! Go on google and look me up. I am the author of the Refuge Trilogy. Look under Wayne Miles-Underhill. You can see my tie. Rosie and I are cruising to Hawaii October 5/24 Maybe we will see you on board? Keep up the look works.
I used to prefer HAL. But their food has gone downhill post pandemic; and why does ALL of the entertainment have to be some kind of music? I am not a huge music fan (of any genre) and prefer shows and comedians, etc... So we have moved to older ships on Princess. They too are smaller, but have EXCELLENT food and entertainment, and the staff is AMAZING! (As is HAL's to be honest). But we are happier overall on Princess- on the older smaller ships.
Thanks so much for sharing this feedback! This is SUPER helpful. I haven't noticed the food going downhill...but I have heard AMAZING things about Princess. That's good to know that you prefer the older Princess ships too...sounds like I need to give them a try! 😄😃 I think Princess is quite a bit more $$ though, right?
One thing I miss, are the departure BBQs.. Ribs, steak, or Chicken.. Secondly.. I wish they would improve their breakfast scrambled eggs.. How about using real eggs, and learn how to properly scramble them-- American style.. Their scrambled eggs look like cottage cheese.. Tasteless, and basically raw.. Terrible.. I wish they would take some lessons from the Pan Pacific buffet breakfast in Vancouver.. During my pre-boarding, for the Alaska cruises, that is the best breakfast on the whole trip. Thirdly.. . I miss the formal nights.. I love seeing the women dressed up like royalty, instead of the usual plain jane.. Finally.. The room service.. How many times it arrives stone cold.. Especially the lobster benedict, which you have to pay for.. It's not like the deliverers have to travel across town.. It should take about 2 or 3 minutes from kitchen, to your table
Gosh...it's been SO long since they did the departure BBQs and what-not, I don't even remember that! That sounds like it would be REALLY lovely and fun (and not cost HAL too much!) 🍔🫕🍲 I guess I haven't tried their scrambled eggs...I always get a hard-boiled egg (and I heard their omelet station is great!!). Is the Pan Pacific buffet a hotel buffet? It sounds fancy!! I miss the formal nights too! Although I do enjoy not having to pack 2 extra pairs of fancier dresses and heels. Now I pack 1 fancier dress and sandals that are classy. That's weird that the room service food is cold. That's too bad!!! Hopefully things get better again.... P.S. Please subscribe if you haven't already to be notified of new videos, and thank you for the helpful comment!! www.youtube.com/@cruisetipswithchristina?sub_confirmation=1
If wearing orange clothes and eating Dutch food is your idea of entertainment, take a Holland America cruise. That way, all the people with lower expectations won’t be on the cruise lines that have good entertainment which is where I will be from now on. Many HAL cruisers have never been on any other cruise line and perhaps they “love” Holland America because they don’t know better? HAL has good food but bring a book if you want “entertainment.”
Awww...I wouldn't be that negative!! My idea of entertainment is a show and dancing at a club....but I still like Holland America! And I think lots of HAL cruises have been on other cruises...and they just keep on going back to HAL because they love the service and the price and it's a good fit for them. 😃 What's your favorite cruise line? Maybe Virgin? I know people LOVE that one!
@@cruisetipswithchristina I have not yet sampled Virgin. I have enjoyed Princess, RCCL, Celebrity, Windstar, NCL, Regent and, more often than not, Carnival has been nice. I went on the new Rotterdam back-to-back after Princess for a total of 25 days and HAL was the biggest disappointment of any of my 35 cruises. Dining room food was excellent but the lack of “shows” was a big disappointment. HAL acts like it is still the 19th century and they are doing you a big favor to have a string quartet as entertainment. Geez, even the Titanic had a band in 1912. This is the 21st century and it is nice to have a top tier comedian, a singer that I’ve heard of, a production show or even a good juggling act after dinner. Windstar ships only have 200-300 guests so their entertainment isn’t “big” but HAL’s was about equal to those little tiny ships imo. It’s just not my cup of tea but good for the HAL fans.
@@SC-ie5bm Wow! Sounds like you have done a LOT of cruising!! They do lack in the nighttime entertainment shows...I'm surprised they didn't have a comedian on your cruise? Usually they have 1 or 2. But I do agree...they need to do a better job with the evening shows. Is Princess your favorite cruise line then? I have yet to try it and it sounds like you know the best of the best!
@@cruisetipswithchristina Princess is VERY good. I highly recommend it. Good entertainment, good food (formal AND informal) and great ships. HAL has good formal dining food and good ships so they are half way there.
@@SC-ie5bm Thank you for the comment! Yeah I agree...their lack of shows it a disappointment...and now they have even gotten rid of the string quartet! HAL usually has 2 comedians per 1 week cruise, so I'm surprised you didn't see one! I'll have to give Princess or Celebrity a try one day. I'd like to see them!
Danish food?!!! You need to hire an editor. Among other things that has changed on HAL No HAL branded chocolates on your pillow as part of the turn down service except on Dressy/Gala Nights which used to be called Formal Night. Room Service Breakfast Menu selections have greatly been reduced. No more room slippers. The resident band, The HALCats, are no longer around. The stage shows/productions all use canned music so no houseband required. And with the HAL Cats gone, there is no impromptu music entertainment on the Lido Deck or by the SeaView Pool. Last October, we were on the Rotterdam doing a two segment (28 days) Amsterdam- Amsterdam, Amsterdam reposit to Fort Lawderdale cruise, the first two week segment there was no trio or musical entertainment of anykind in the Ocean Bar. Disappointing. The list goes on but I won't.
Yes, sometimes I do make mistakes 😅😂 I do this as a hobby, so in no way make enough money to hired an editor. If I did, my videos would be WAY better quality. Maybe some day, but not anytime in the next 5 years! 🤣 And I agree that it's such a shame that HAL has cut so, so many things. 😭 Have you switched to another cruise line instead?
Dutch!! I don't use a script, so sometimes I use the wrong word or phrase things in an awk way 🤣😂 Have you noticed any changes on HAL recently? Maybe I missed a few things 😁😃
Aww...I actually like the Orange Party! And last time I was on the cruise, the Bar Crawl people were younger!! And yes...I sometimes make mistakes. I don't use a script, and I am a rookie at RUclips! 😆🤣
I'm actually quite smart if you were interested in my GMAT scores or SAT scores. I don't use scripts for my videos, so sometimes I use the wrong word. Once you have a RUclips channel that you manage on the side on top of your job for fun, you can complain 😀
I've cruised 7 times and only with HAL. After my Jan 2024 cruise and the totally terrible "entertainment" I sadly have decided that I won't be cruising with HAL again. The night time shows were abysmal and I only went to 3 of them. Even those were not very entertaining. They used to have two "production" type of shows each cruise, previously. Now that has gone and replaced with the not very interesting dancing. Very disappointing.
Oh gosh I haven't heard about that yet!! But today I saw something on a Facebook group about a waitlist to be upgraded...is that what you are referring to? I don't think the Waitlist existing earlier on this year?
@@cruisetipswithchristina its new. You pick a sailing from a list they post. If there is a cabin category you requested available 2 weeks to 5 days prior sail date, then they notify you. Accepting it, you pay only $49/day pp.
@@seastheday956 Wow!!!! That is CRAZY cheap! So you could theoretically get a balcony room for only $49/day? That is crazy! I probably eat that much worth of food in 1 day! 😃
I had to laugh at "this and that wasn't good, but it was no big deal." Well, you add up all those "no big Deals" and it becomes a big deal. They are supposed to be making you happy and entertained. If you are not happy and entertained, then why go on a cruise? I went on a long expensive Princess Cruise one year and got burned so bad by poor service and not keeping me happy, that I did not cruise for about 6 years. I found other entertainment. So service, food, and entertainment must be tops. I think loss of the Lincoln Center Stage is a big deal. I think no Kitchen shows is a big deal, my wife always attended those. I remember when facial recognition just started in the cruise industry, and it was a bit rough to say the least and aggravated a lot of people. Funny what you said about the hats and sunglasses -- I got nailed on that myself. I remember being really pissed at the time because they were nasty about it. I think that was on Princess Line. Hopefully it works now. In my opinion, keep things simple. They keys or Ship IDs always seem to work well and fast. Good news about the Wifi -- but is it affordable? Turndown service at night is great. No Filet and Lobster??? OMG. What a fall from grace for a "premium line," but I could live with it if they bring back the Lincoln Center.
Thanks for the comment!! I suppose for me...the main thing about cruising with Holland America is the nice staff, the relaxing atmosphere, and the warm places that the cruise line takes me when we go to the Caribbean 😃 So although I'm disappointed with things, the main things that are really important to me Holland America still offers. Although I do really miss my filet!!! Hopefully Holland America does bring back the Lincoln Center...I heard rumors that they may be bringing it back!! So do you still cruise with Holland America cruise line then, or have you moved to another cruise line?
@@cruisetipswithchristina The Noordam is the only Holland ship I sailed on numerous cruises. So far it's my favorite. I felt like I was back during the Titanic White Star Lines days when I cruised in that. It was classy, not many kids. Today it's probably a medium class ship, but it certainly is not small. When I circled it with a Jet Ski, it seemed gigantic. But I have not been on it for many years. I spent most of my vacations in Asia. I tried Princess and didn't like them, although the ship was ok. I would like to get up to date and try the Holland MS Nieuw Amsterdam. After 43+ years of working for the U.S. Government, I finally retired to the Philippines with my new Philippine wife who never cruised. So I am thinking of flying from the Philippines to Florida in 2025 or 2026 for a 7 to 14 day Cruise. I hope Holland is still a good line and the New Amsterdam is still a good ship. However, I normally focus on the itinerary, not the ship, so I'm not sure what line/ship I will take.
@@user-DrJoe-Future If you've only been on the Noordam before, I think you will really like the Nieuw Amsterdam!!! And how cool that you moved to the Philippines for retirement and to be with your wife!!! How is it?

I know I know...sometimes I mis-speak 🤷♀️ I guess my cell phone can sometimes unlock with a hat and my sunglasses on...and it's such a pain to have to remove them when getting on and off the ship!
Not everyone loves my videos. And I'm okay with that! 😃😁 And yes, sometimes I don't use the right words. I don't use a script, and that means that sometimes I mis-speak 🤷♀️
Ya know, some thing are never going to change. I refuse to buy a Corvette becouse....ONLY old fat bald guys drive Corvette's. Same with cruise ships. Family's for the most part either can't get the time off, or cant afford it, or one or more of the familey members just don't want to go. That leaves us later in life people to cruise. If you look at some cruise lines they only do 4 or 7 day cruises for that reason. It's not a bad thing. I'm looking forward to my 53 day cruise on Holland America, and no kids is ok by me. Thanks for the video.
Oh it's not that bad!! Last cruise I was on I actually saw quite a few couples in their 40s/early 50s!! I don't plan on dying until I'm past the age of 95...so 40s/50s/and even 60s is far, far away from that!! 😂 But...still not anything like Virgin or Royal Caribbean 😃

Regarding Lincoln Center: I talked with someone on the ship (I was on the late January trip to the ABC islands on the Rotterdam) who said they were negotiating with Lincoln Center to bring it back. We shall see what happens.
Thank you for the update!! Yes, that would be AMAZING!
I hope so. It’s such a special offering.
I hope they are successful.
This is great news!! Which ships will be bringing back the Lincoln Center Stage, and when? I'm sure people will want to know!
Great to see another video from you. Nice that you incluided a list of things that stay the same along with the changes. Very much looking forward to my first Holland America cruise in May.

3 chocolate extravaganzas?!! Wow!! I'm so glad to hear that you have more HAL cruises booked. How many did you end up booking?!!
Main dining room definitely has suffered a reduction in service delivery time. Sadly.
Was this for the open dining or assigned dining? I didn't notice any differences in assigned dining for dinner, but I did notice it being slower for breakfast in the MDR. Thank you for the comment!! 🙂

And the excursion descriptions are so vague...you really have no clue what you are getting!
@Eric-ii9ce yikes!!
We agree with you, plus on our trip on HAL Jan 24, no captain’s night and yes shows are bad
Terribly bad!!! I hope they get better soon!!! It's so, so boring and disappointing to not have a fun show to look forward to after dinner!
is purchasing the Orange club worth it?
Thanks so much for the helpful comment! 😀😃
I agree. Lots of working people
Do you mean they are bringing back the production style of shows they used to have twice in a 13night cruise. With the singers and dancers etc ?????
I'm disappointed about Lincoln Center Stage. I'm a classical musician and was really looking forward that. Not extending the contract means prices went up. Such a shame.
Hopefully they bring Lincoln Center Stage back! Even if prices went up...I think it would be worth it to renew the contract given how popular it was!
Great topic and very well presented. My wife and I are sailing this Thursday so this is useful. And, yes, we're retired 😀
Yay!! So glad to hear that you found this helpful. And I love the retired people! They are all happy and so nice.
Where are you guys sailing?
😃😄
My wife and I don't drink a lot of alcoholic drinks. We drink mostly sodas, coffees and juices. What is the charge for sodas, regular coffee and juices other than at breakfast?
Regular coffee and juice (orange juice, prune juice, apple juice) is free. For the sodas...I'd have to look at the menus. It might be $3? $4? I'd have to check!
It used to be free with meals (MDR) or lido. But specialty coffees always cost extra.
Sodas cost money anywhere outside of those two areas.
So the main reason I booked a Christmas Cruise was for the Lincoln Center concert series. Now...I am bummed to the brim.
ALL cruise lines have fewer workers since covid…….they are all operating with far from a full staff…….hence, the delay in the dining rooms.
Maybe! But I didn't notice slower service in the main dining room for dinner...or slower service up in the Lido or elsewhere on the ship.
Thanks so much for the comment and the observations! This is helpful for other cruise travelers to read. 😀😃

Yum, yum, yum!!! The Lido buffet has much better food now then they used to!😄🥳
Note that not all ships have the same venues on the Music Walk.

Ok ty!
Usually the Orange party is on the last sea day...at least that's how it was on our cruise!
So glad that you enjoy the videos! I'd LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it if you subscribe to my channel too! www.youtube.com/@cruisetipswithchristina?sub_confirmation=1
and yes to this! It's not on Dressy night and it is in the evening! It's on a Sea Day!
Ty all!
Are mobility scooters allowed on HAL? If so, can they be parked in hall ways outside your cabin?
No. In your room for safety. One person said theirs was taken charged overnight and returned
Their yellow chicken curry with mango slaw was the best I've ever had
@@saffloweroyl3663 Yum!! That does sound delicious! I'll have to try that next time! Was it over in the main dining room or up in the Lido?

Wow. Danish? Are you doing a video about Denmark America Line??
LOL...I know, I know!! Sometimes I use the wrong word 😬😬😬
I'm sure if Denmark had a cruise line it would be lovely!
hello Cristina. we are goiing for the first time one a cruise with HAL. cab you book excursions abroad the ship in a harbour or something. is that cheaper?
Theo from Holland
Hi Theo! It's usually cheaper to book excursions NOT through Holland America. We usually take a taxi to the beach and just do that. If you want to book an excursion, I'd check out Trip Advisor or Viator.
However...YES - you can book once you are onboard the ship. However, the best excursions sell out ahead of time.
Thank you for the great videos! Good information. I gotta say though, you certainly do not sound like your from Atlanta. I am from Canada and anytime we go that far south, most people have quite the accent! lol
Hello. Wi Fi fee is per day?
It changes...I'd look at their website: www.hollandamerica.com/en/us/onboard-packages/cruise-ship-wifi
It sounds like worse service costs more. Music walk & entertainment is worse. Is there anything good about a Holland America cruise?
Oh I wouldn't say that at all!!! I think the Music Walk is great. Totally agree that the entertainment is worse (I hope it gets better soon!) I'd say that the staff is AMAZING, the cruise is SO relaxing, the cruises have great itineraries, are affordable, and that the food is good too and the staterooms are clean and pretty nice! 😃
If you don’t like it, I’ll take your spot! We love HAL!
Doesn’t sound like you’d like to try.
@@deekang6244 I do like it!!! 🤣 Just wish they changed some things...that's all 😀
You're done a great job identifying what's going on with HAL recently.
You must cruise with HAL a lot then?
Hi Christina. Only four cruises with HAL. All inclusive resorts are better value and here's why: There's A LOT more competition than the three major cruise corporations. No free booze cruise.@@cruisetipswithchristina
We will be on Oosterdam for transatlantic in April …. wondering if we need to download movies or does HAL have a Netflix-type offering?
❤ love your videos!!
Not at all!! They have 100+ videos in the room (they said that...and I counted!)
And thank you so, so much for subscribing!! I have like 10 more videos that I need to upload at least...it's just a matter of finding the time!
thanks for these info ❤
My pleasure!!! I hope you have a fantastic weekend! ♥️
@@EquusIV Interesting...I've only seen two music venues/bands on the Pinnacle class ships, and then ONLY BB Kings on the older ships? Interesting!
Our first HA cruise happens in mid-April thru the Panama Canal.
I'll wave to you from the Island Princess if we see you there! We are doing Princess through the PC in late April also
You will have a great time on Princess! People LOVE that cruise line as well! 😃😄
Yay!!! You will have an AMAZING time! People LOVE the cruises that go through the Panama Canal. Many people say it is their favorite! 😃🥳💃
Great Video
They still do have classical groups. They are just not from Lincoln center
What has replaced Lincoln Center entertainment?
I think it's just an empty space now!! I think during the day they have arts and crafts in that space sometimes 🤷♀️
About wifi. They upgraded to star link. So the internet service is way better
100% agree!! I was VERY happy with it.
Thank you
Your welcome! I hope you found the video helpful 😃
Thank you
My pleasure!! Please let me know if you have any questions.
The experience on the Rotterdam is not the same as one will have on the older HAL ships.
Good point!! Each ship is slightly different in what they offer and how they do things, and it probably depends on the cruise director and the captain as well. Thank you for pointing this out!
They are going fully "non-US" for their customer service reps, so be prepared for lots of repeating yourself and other frustrations
Oh gosh...that would be horrible!!!! I hope not!
I'm used to it, with all the first generation Canadians in my locale. We know to pack our patience, no matter where we've been.
CRAZY!
Crazy indeed! 😂🤣😊
(Celebrity better pastry)
Found dressy night nothing interesting only add to our luggage, should come w entertainment. Just diner & back to cabin.

Do you have an upcoming cruise with HAL anytime soon?
Who knows 🤷♀️
I do like to dress up too!
Cheers.

I think Princess is quite a bit more $$ though, right?

Times for each part? Not what you mean. 😃 Would you elaborate?
did you mean dutch not danish
Yes, I do 🤣 I make mistakes sometimes. 🤷♀️
@Eric-ii9ce 😆🤣
That sounds like it would be REALLY lovely and fun (and not cost HAL too much!) 🍔🫕🍲
I guess I haven't tried their scrambled eggs...I always get a hard-boiled egg (and I heard their omelet station is great!!).

Danish?
Oh dear...what did I say instead? 🤣
@@cruisetipswithchristina lol, you said danish instead of Dutch
What's your favorite cruise line?

Danish, I think you mean Dutch.
Yes!!! Whoops!🤷♀️🤣😅

For gods sake. It’s HOLLAND America line. They have DUTCH food during Orange Party not DANISH food from DENMARK
How can you get Dutch and Danish wrong?
