What a grand old cemetery. All the overgrown vines, bushes, trees. This gets a thumbs up......

    Jefferson Lester,
I never realised Bristol had such a large and “could be” beautiful Cemetery! But it’s so overgrown in parts it resembles Highgate cemetery in London.I deplore a place with such wonderful memorials and the once very famous names like Wills tobacco company being neglected so badly and left to nature to overgrow, take back, and gradually destroy and pull down, when I doubt we will ever see the like of such wonderfully built,
EXPENSIVELY built creations again, and the names and graves of Bristols famous fathers surely should be looked after and kept free of overgrowth and weeds for future generations to come and look at and learn about too.
You say you used to do graveyard maintenance, so would be the ideal chap to lead the way to a team of volunteers, but I get the feeling you have since retired from that type of work, plus like myself, live quite some distance sway to prevent your just popping round for an hours work!
( I am disabled now and in Norfolk!) we can only hope the fitter people of BRistol read this, and can pursuade the Members of the City Council to take immediate action in sprucing this remarkable cemetery, and getting it back on the map as a special place of interest to all who live as well as.
Visit. A lot of those tall elaborate memorials are really beautiful, and no longer built today as the cost is so prohibited. And then hidden up the top of that hill one small war grave belonging to a serviceman who died in his 30’s after the First World War, which was humbling to see, especially just after Remembrance Sunday. Gif bless him, and thank him for his service.
I believe I heard the gentleman showing all of this too us, mention another cemetery across the road, which no doubt will be a copy of the state of this one, yet so much hidden history slowly being swallowed up and lost forever. So come on you Bristonians reading this! Your initial Heritage and the rest of the Countries history. , which must be cleared and tidied up before it is lost for good..! Thankyou Jefferson…you woukd make a good team leader!!!🙋‍♀️🥰☕️🙋‍♀️👍🙏xx

I agree with some people’s remarks about it looking a mess and over grown. However I would like to point out this cemetery was privately owned for some years and just left. The owner then tried to sell to developers to build houses, the local council stepped in and bought it. They now have lots of volunteers to help look after the cemetery, but it is so big. Also families of the buried planted young trees in the grave that have now grown and have taken over the plot. There is a lot of wildlife that live on the grounds and they’re not allowed to destroy the habitats. My husband used to live in a house that backed onto the cemetery and would often get deer in his garden from the cemetery. It is such an interesting place, I have been on a couple of there tours that tell you interesting facts.

So much history and gorgeous memorials. It is too bad the overgrowth is taking over. Just enjoying what we can see and the tidbits of information. Thank you for taking us on this walk.

How do you manage to remain so calm during these walks Sir? I'd be all over the place, "look at this one!, OMG look at that, etc". Beautiful memorials and stones. Thank you so much.

One thing I would just say, is please don’t anyone be tempted to try to clean the dirty writing on the stones with bleach abd a scrubbing brush.
Sounds a good idea initially, but depending on the type of stone used, can sadly be damaged even more , and ruined. It needs to be done professionally by people who know what they are doing, sorry, 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 clearance can be done this winter while weeds are low!
