  • Are you a little confused about the differences between Grappled and Restrained in Dungeons & Dragons? They sound almost the same so what exactly does each one do? Today's video breaks it all down and makes it easier to figure out.
    Be sure to answer the EPIC Question of the Day in the comments below - Do you often try to grapple or restrain monsters or creatures (NPC's included) in your games? Now that you know what benefits these conditions provide, will you try to do it more often?

    I remember having to explain this to my players more than once after the 5e launch. Very informative!

    Great video! This is a great video for people learning the game, really well explained!
    I noticed that you said Evard’s Black Tentacles was just a wizard spell but it’s also a warlock and sorcerer spell too, the arcane pack cards from gale force nine are for multiple classes and you can see the classes the spell can be cast by on the back :D
    Also another point interesting point, if you grapple a creature with the prone condition they can’t stand up as their movement is zero. Pretty neat huh!
    Keep up the great work!

      Thanks so much for this info! I was going off D&D Beyond and it just mentions Wizards and the Pact of the Great Old One (which I missed) Awesome to know that the cards have those markings on the back! I never noticed it! Thanks so much for watching!

    Great video as always! This just came up in our game last Friday. Much learning took place after a disagreement and each of us looking it up in the rules. I don't graple creatures much when I play as a PC, but monsters definitely like to grapple.

      I think the next time I make a melee PC I'll try grappling more and see if it makes a big difference! There are some good grappling and restraining spells out there too - anything to beat those monsters! LOL Thanks for watching!

    Great video! This is definitely a confusing thing for new players, but restraining and grappling are great ways to control what's going on in combat. My only note would be that you can grapple creatures up to one size larger, so that gnome can also grapple other small creatures too!

      Great point! I forgot to mention that you can grapple your own size! There are so many conditions that I find it can be hard to remember how they all work. Thanks so much for watching!

    You can restrain someone using mundane items like rope or manacles, but will likely take more than one action, or require the target to be grappled or invapacitated.

    You can grapple someone, use the push action to make them go prone. Now they are proned and grappled. Which is restrained. You dont need the feat grappler for this, which is why the feat is universally known as a junk feat. All this gives is a second check via grapple to make them restrained which means it's not terrible for early level chars. However, you can do the same thing by forcing them to go prone. It gives you advantage on people you have grappled! Wow... cool. Once they are prone on the ground I get that too. It's basically a very big and wasted feat or Asi waste. If you actually want to be better at a brawler/grappler character then you take a skill boost feat for athletics and or tavern brawler. I play a level one monk/fighter 5 (battlemaster)/rest into barbarian (totem) dwarf. I use grapples all the time ;)

      @@KristensEpicAdventures should be in chapter 9 of the players handbook, making an attack section, page 195 for both shove attack and grapple. The biggest difference between restrained and grappled is anytime your chained, roped up etc, that's being restrained without the use of a grapple. Otherwise you just replace an attack with a grapple or a shove attack until you get what you want. Basically you're doing the high school bully or the mma fighter.

    • @cdezelah2958
      @cdezelah2958 2 года назад

      Let me edit this: you need to have a successful push/shove to make them go prone as well as a successful grapple check to get the same results as restrained (only it's way worse then being restrained normally imo cause you've got some weirdo sitting ontop of you keeping you there while he or she beats you up) once your character has bullied the target into submission like his or her name was Mark "the hammer" Coleman and you're fighting for that sweet sweet UFC's title, you take em to pound town and use all attacks and bonus attacks on them. If you're like me you've taken unarmed fighting and have a claw tattoo so your fists are +1 d8 weapons... three attacks a round with advantage with an extra 1d4 at the start of your turn. It's basically like playing a control support but you only control one person at a time till you've beaten their face into a shell of its former self.

    What are your thoughts on incorporeal creatures? I have the Idea to use Entangle on a wraith but sense it has the ability to move though people and objects would is still be feasible? technically they less damage through regular means, but full on magical. Sense entangle is a magical spell does it make sense that it would restrain them? So confusing!

    • @KristensEpicAdventures
      @KristensEpicAdventures  Год назад

      That's a really cool idea! I'd say you could decide to homebrew this and modify the creature to make it what you want for the sake of a really awesome encounter. Maybe mention to your players that you've modified a few things so they don't mind. Thanks so much for watching 🤓
