The Lion's Tail - a perfect fall cocktail

- In today's video, I mix up a perfect fall cocktail, the lion's tail! This drink dates back to the 1930's, and at the bar has attracted quite the following. Here, bourbon''s paired with lime and allspice inching this cocktail towards the likes of tiki. Perfect for a fall afternoon, this spicy/snappy sour is honestly wonderful every season of the year. Cheers!

This drink has big flavors that would hold up to further dilution. So if you like your drinks on the rocks, feel free to go that route!

So what is it called when you swap the demerara syrup for honey syrup and the bourbon for an aged rum like el dorado 15 year, or what should I call it?
Let’s hear more about making Allspice Dram one day soon!
I regularly make these when I have friends over. Went to make a round last night and realized I was out of bourbon. I subbed an Appleton estate run and it was very good that way too
I love it when cocktail folks use Eagle Rare in a drink. It sends some of the bourbon geeks into a tizzy :)
Haha! I say if it’s your bottle, you should drink it however you like. Cheers!
Why? Since it means there's less in stores? I guess since I fall into both camps and live in an area where almost nothing is hard to find it just makes me happy to see!
Made this with Whistlepig Piggyback Rye and homemade allspice dram and it was DELICIOUS, my new favorite cocktail
Whooohooo!!! Just saw this! Can not wait to have one of these again. Thank you!!
You guys have sustained me through isolating quarantine. Keep up the good stuff:)
Cannot wait to make this for my dad and me on a fair fall evening -- thanks for the recommendation!
Love it! I kept forgetting to add the allspice dram to the booze shopping list. Grabbed some this weekend and this was the first cocktail I made. So good!
Very pleased with this recipe, along with every other we have got from Anders. :)
Twist a tail! Make it snappy! Thanks for launching a beautiful weekend, Anders.
That Allspice dram is a rare sighting in these neck of the woods, but I will keep an eye out for it. Seems like a splendid recipe! Thank you
This sent me down the rabbit hole of making my own allspice dram. Well, 15 days later I'm enjoying my first (and definitely not my last) lions tail. Thank you Anders!
I was searching for how to provoke a lion and came across this cocktail recipe, the message at the end could have very well saved my life, and as a plus I’m having a drink
I see why so many people requested this, it’s excellent!. Thank you.
Made this last night - one of my favorites now!
Thanks for the recipe! Just made it and it’s delish!
WHOA! DEFINITELY MY FAVE SO FAR!
Oh my god! Just now finding this in the future year of 2023! So delicious!
Just imagine, the videos you are putting out today will still be blowing minds years from now into the future!
Whoa.
It's like time travel...
Love the channel! Cheers!
This channel is awesome. Every video gets me fired up and takes my mind off of college for a second. Merci Beaucoup !
Happy to help! Cheers!
You’ve inspired me! I’ll be making these as welcome shots and dealers choice for my guests tonight.
I love to hear that! Sounds like a good night ahead. Cheers, Mike!
My god, Anders! I tried this with some Allspice dram I made with Wray&Nephew , used Maker's mark as the Bourbon and left some
rocks in the glass and goddamn this is my new favorite drink!!!!!! Also 0.5 oz on the demerara syrup was a game changer for my palate
Made this tonight and it was wonderful
I watch this video if I am having a bad day. Just cheers me right up.
My favorite cocktail!
I’ve always loved the Lion’s Tail. I make my own allspice dram, which tastes fuller than the St. Elizabeth’s. This drink tastes like Christmas in a glass! Thank you!
you should share your recipe for your allspice dram ;)
I am so excited! Making Demerara simple LIKE NOW! Yippee. Thank you!
Haha! That’s amazing. Cheers!! 🥃 🦁
You and me both!
Would love to see ‘my fav fall/winter/spring/summer’ vids!
Just made this with my winter spice infused bourbon and homemade allspice dram. Delicious! Thank you, Anders!
Would love a good recipe for allspice dram…..
I live in Vancouver,Canada and allspice dram simply doesn’t exist…..
Mmm that should be delicious. I really like the contrast in colors between the drink and the green "tail" on top. Cheers and enjoy your weekend.
Thank you so much! We drink with our eyes first, so we’ve got to keep it pretty 😂
@@AndersErickson definitely. First impression is very important for the whole experience of the drink. 👍
had this drink last week where they used Maple Syrup and lemon juice, it was good too! I like it both ways
FWIW, when I shop for limes I select based on their use. Juice limes are better with thinner skins, very smooth with light pores. Zest limes are chosen for heavily pored/rough skins which are generally thicker and more appropriate for zesting/garnishing. And yes, thumbs up and saved to try! Thanks Anders!
Damn, that beat sync'd with the hit on the shaker at 3:01 ! That did things to me
I thought I knew a decent amount about liquors and liqueurs, but that allspice one really surprised me; I never knew such a beast existed.
The allspice dram in this comes through perfectly. I'm using Blanton's. Totally worth it!
This is a new one for me. Looking forward to trying it.
You're gonna love it! Cheer!
What an amazing cocktail. The allspice dram gives it a nice kick. Definitely has a tiki feel.
It's that allspice "snap" that makes you want more! Cheers, Peter!
By far one of my favorite flavors to mix with rum! Jamaicans use pimento/all spice in so much of their cooking. It's in everything!
Anders, you are our Cocktail Sherpa!
I'm combing through your playlist of classics and just realized that Disney's "Tempting Tigress" at the Nomad Lounge in Animal Kingdom is literally just a Lion's Tail with Tamarind Syrup instead of Demerara. I fell in love with it at the park and Greg from HTD did a really good copycat recipe; I thought it was a Disney original, so imagine my surprise when I get to this video and learn that of course it wasn't. Lol.
Never heard of this one... but I'm going to try. it... Merci
Awesome video as always! Everyone’s doing this drink lately! Haha... it’s actually in my queue for late November! Lol.. but I have to make my own allspice dram since I can’t find any here! Keep it up! Cheers! 🥃🍹
Yeah it's a great cocktail for this time of year. Love that you're making your own allspice dram! Cheers! 🦁
Блин, ребят, обожаю Вас! вы классные. Просто смотрю нонстопом 😂 не спиться бы
This will go great in my new Nick and Nora glasses!
This looks awesome. Would love to know about making my own allspice liquor, and and cocktail cherries while you’re at it :)
Love eagle rare neat or in a cocktail. Really subtle green tea note. some people say grape too but I don't pick up on it
I think a ward 8 is also a great drink that deserves to be mentioned
This looks fantastic. I need to find a bottle of that all spice. Not sure I’ve seen it around (or I wasn’t looking). This has fall/autumn written all over it. 🦁 🥃
Absolutely! Seasonably appropriate 👍
Looks like a nice option for fall. Thoughts on starting like an old fashion, muddle a sugar cube in the bitters. Cheers.
I actually searched for a Flannel Shirt and this came up, they are very similar
Possibly my favorite so far. Score one for all spice dram.
Ah, my first drink at Ward Eight...You ruined me for all others, Anders with this perfection. I’m all recursive meta: making a Lion’s Tail while you were making a Lion’s Tail and drinking a Lion’s Tail while you were drinking a Lion’s Tail. Cheers! We miss you. See you soon!
Cheers, Lea! Love that we could have a lion’s tail “together” 😂
A wonder cocktail. If you like this definitely try a Nui Nui cocktail.
I dusted off a bottle of Lemon Hart 151 for some homemade allspice dram a few months ago. Time to break it out! Thanks, Anders.
Oh excellent! You're going to have a very special lion's tail. Well played. Cheers!
This is a favorite of Black Liver Project's researcher Jay. He also likes this because he likes to talk about Irish Independence a lot
Haha... it’s good to have a hobby!
I, surprising no one, did not have eagle rare on hand. So I used this pretty nice Elijah Craig single barrel. Came out very good. 🤝
I'll be trying it with Maker's Mark. I'm sure it'll be good either way.
Angus! So glad I found your RUclips classic drinks. Now, do I try to get thru all of them alphabetically or chronologically? Cheers
Steve! So glad you found the channel! Feel free to work your way through them however you'd like. Happy to have you!
A perfect twist (not counting the lime 😂) on a delicious cocktail! Can’t wait to try to make this one at home 😊
Yeah those limes can be tricky! 😂
Need it
Back in the day, when you could get Eagle Rare for $30, anywhere.
I would associate orange being more a fall flavor than lime especially coming off a summer of lime forward drinks.
Anders, love your channel. Just tried making this drink. It tastes fine, but mine doesn't have as much of a foamy head on top as yours does. Does that mean I need to shake harder or is it my strainer? Perhaps I need a smaller/finer mesh?
What is the purpose of double straining when there's only liquid ingredients in the shaker? Just to keep out small ice chips?
Every time I see this thumbnail I read it as Lil Jon's tail and I'm confused for a second.
Drink found for tomorrow night. Using Hamilton Allspice Dram and Blantons.
Excellent! That is going to be one delicious lion’s tail. Cheers! 🥃 🦁
Wonder if you could use Falernum ( I have) instead of Allspice Dram (which I do not) ?
ok…. gotta ask what ice maker are you using?? im an ice nerd… love the channel!!!
Hey Anders! Have you used Tuaca much before? I made a Lion’s Tail and replaced half the bourbon with Tuaca, and it was delicious. It seems like an ingredient with lots of potential, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!
Salud🍻
Any ideas how to jazz this up even more? Nutmeg or cinnamon? I want it to really scream holiday
Hello Anders, can you also use drambui instead of Allspice dram?
wait you can MAKE allspice dram??? I can't find it at any liquor store around so that is a game changer!!
@AndersErickson,
Do you use clear ice in a shaker?
Could you sub Drambuie for the Allspice Dram?
Try with grapefruit juice
Why the double strain?
My liquor store will love you. They love me already, but I'll spend quite a bit on liqueurs soon.
I know the feeling!
LOL....My wife loves and hates me for similar reasons I'm sure😂
Thank you for including the booboos - helps me feel better.
I can't find Allspice Dram. Is it possible to swap it for Bitter Truth Pimento Dram?
Absolutely 👍
@@AndersErickson thank you.
@anders erickson, the Lion's Tail is delicious.
You ain't lion! This is snappy af!
😂 nope! I ain't 🦁

this is like the only cocktail i dont really like it was over powered by the allspice. good vid though.
Understandable. I’m glad you gave it a try! I hope you find a ratio you’re happy with. Cheers!
Wow ! Thanks for sharing your video!
I need to try it.
