11:42 This is a side view of one of the movie theaters wide open ripped in half!!! I didn’t realize until watching again… that’s awesome seeing the seats angled down toward the screen! 🎥🍿🎞️
Yea! Those rings are some unique features of this mall. I wonder if they hold some secret powers that a superhero can unlock? It’s like a marvel movie … Avengers: Rings of Richland! 😂😂😂
Thanks for the great video. I drive by the mall several times a week to check on the demolition progress. Your video highlights the unseen progress from my point of view. The Parisian building is completely gone. The structure that straddles the neighborhood was the Verizon call center. The 3 level part was the movie theater. You can see the seats still in place. The Belks building will be taken down as well as the Dillard's building. The developer tried to convince Belks to relocate into the Parisian building but they declined and the building is gone. I do believe that the developer intends to keep the peripheral parking garages. There is no basement to the structure. The original mall was built on a swamp area. A lot of the underlying support was built up to put the mall above the water table. I would imagine that it will be retained for the future development.
@@thatpart yea, it’s good and bad. It was past due for the mall to go, but sucks to lose such a unique building. Thanks for always watching and jumping in the comments!!! 👍
The Dillard's building was originally Bonwitt Teller I believe. The Belk store in the middle was a JB White before Belk. A shame Belk decided not to go in the former Parisian building in the new development. That was a really nice store.
@@vistatiger7493 hi vista! I believe the Parisian might have had some major mold issues. When I was talking to a guard during my visit a few years ago, he said they were not allowed to be in that section of the structure for more than a few minutes due to mold in the walls and air.
One thing I always loved about this mall was the amazing McDonald like play place near the food court that alone made this place unique. Can’t recall another mall that had a McDonald’s type playplace inside a mall
Oh, wow, now apartments and a grocery store or two will be there. Whoopty doo. This place was amazing but never took off. It's been dead for a quarter of a century. It's amazing that it stood and stayed up for as long as it did. I think the answer and or answers pertaining to that was that there just wasn't the money to tear it down in the first place. Someone in my father's Sunday School class said his company bought it a few years ago because it was dirt cheap. Not sure that's a good reason to buy something.
Hey Alex! Thanks for watching and jumping in the comments! I really wish I could have gone in the mall when belk and Barnes were still open. When the mall was bought for dirt cheap, the idea was possibly to sit on it until a developer wanted to buy it or partner with the town to get some tax incentives and loans to redevelop the property… or just sell it at a higher price when the time came. I’m really surprised at all of the new stores and small retail buildings that have popped up in the area around the mall. I still need to stop at that drive thru coffee place across the street. ☕️🚙
None of the mall is being kept. Originally the Parisian building was going to stay because Belk was going to move into it, however when Belk announced they were just closing instead of staying as part of the redevelopment, that sealed the former Parisian's fate. That three-level part was Belk. The J.B. White that originally stood there had three levels. A fourth level was built directly on top for the Regal (original Litchfield) Theater.
Thanks TNGL! I’ve watched some vids on this mall but never seem to remember what was here back in the day. Some brands I never got to see. Yes! Thanks for confirmation on the whole building coming down. I’m wondering if the new owner was going to jack the rent for Belk or if they came to a silent agreement to just let the entire property move on to its new life. Thanks for watching! 🎉
@@charlestonpinballarcade Gotcha! I thought it was a little too early for a dead Buc-cee's LOL. I'll be visiting the Buc-cee's just outside of Auburn, Alabama this afternoon.
Everything except the parking garage, or part of it, is slated to go. Dillard's occupied what was a Bonwit Teller, as well as some other space in that wing.
Yes, there were fountains around that elevator. No, no basement. The original Richland Mall was built on a somewhat swampy parcel. Belk had a third floor added at some point in the past.
In the redevelopment plan, the Parisian building was to be renovated for a smaller Belk. Belk then decided they were calling it quits there. The Belk had become a last stop for merchandise. As it was, there was no loss of it closing. Unfortunately, there will be no department stores left in a broad section of Columbia.
This was the mall that got away from me. I picked the Columbiana Center while visiting there in my previously mentioned 2004 trip to SC. I should have picked Richland and Columbia Place, or even Dutch Square over Columbiana. Even back then, I loved visiting dying malls. Columbiana was also out of my budget at the time.
Dutch Square still calling your name! Just make sure you watch out for the random guy slamming himself into the doors of the closed Chinese buffet. I was at Dutch a few months ago for another visit. Nothing new to film because it’s just sad. Supposedly the church across the street near the abandoned Arby’s, abandoned Church’s chicken and abandoned True Value hardware bought the mall. 🤣🤣🤣
If you and everyone else doesn’t mind, please keep my family and I in your thoughts as my dad who’s a Vietnam veteran just had emergency lung surgery Tuesday morning. He contacted “Agent Orange” while he was in Vietnam on his one and only day tour because he was drafted and got injured. I was heading up to Florence to visit the comic book shop, but I had to cancel my trip until next week because of my dad. He’s recovering nicely, and hopefully he’ll continue to do so. He had a lobotomy surgery, so we’ll see what happens next. But he’s tough like Optimus Prime 😊
I was just there this Saturday but decided not to go look at it csuse it was so hot outside but went to the new Barnes and noble and it’s ok, I don’t like it as much of the Richland mall store the new one has no character
I could tell you were there! There were two busted monitors in the parking lot where Laserbeak took off from. You probably brought your Nintendo to play there and then you lost a few games of Mario Bros and hulk smashed the screens! 😂💥

I was about to comment that lol that you missed the theater seating
@@bellebrown3603 yea! After I spotted it I was like whoooaaa!!!! 👀👀👀
That one seat hanging on for dear life! 🤣
That view at 4:50 is insane! They should've salvage those cross rings they looked really cool.

Thanks for this update. Spent a lot of time in that mall way back in the day. Bittersweet to see this footage.
11:39 thanks for the good words and info on the property! Check out this one shot in the video of the movie theater ripped open! That’s crazy!

Side note -- In your intro, you show a Buc-cee's. Is there something special with that location?
No, just the location here in SC from an earlier video.
