Uprooted by Naomi Novik is my favourite book of this year so far! About a girl who lives in a village bordered by a dark forest that is slowly consuming the land. There is a wizard who protects the village by keeping the forest at bay, but in return, he requires a girl from the village every 10 years to live with him in his tower. I love love love the dark forest aspect, and its such a beautiful book!
I've heard so many people say this about Uprooted, but though I found the vibes and some of the world building so so cool, I found the plot a bit ... everywhere? It just seemed to drag on and on a lot of the time and I didn't really get the direction anything was going in. Like I felt there were too many little things going on that didn't end up really having anything to do with the main plot as a whole? Idk how to best explain, haha. I also found the romance in the book very strange, but perhaps that's partly because I felt very distant and disconnected from all the characters. I just did not understand them half the time or what their motivations or feelings were 😅
I still have Spinning Silver by her and I want to give it a go, but I'm a bit nervous perhaps there's simply something about her writing style that I don't gel with? Not sure. Did you happen to read that one? If so, was it very similar to Uprooted for you? I've heard that some people seem to love Uprooted and hate Spinning Silver and vice versa so I'm wondering if maybe I'm just a Spinning Silver over Uprooted girly 😂
@@storieswithskye I did think the start was a bit slow, but I think it got better and better the more it went along. I’m not someone who enjoys romance very much (crazy to say) but I get what you mean, it was a bit sudden. I think a lot of the time I overlook the romance! I definitely tunnel visioned the forest part because I love forests 😭. I haven’t read Spinning Silver, but I’ll look it up and see if I’m interested! I haven’t finished A Deadly Education yet, but I’m looking forward to reading it :D

When I read the scholomance trilogy at the end I felt so like "okay guess that's that" and now 9 months later it's one of the series I think most about from a concept standpoint.

I LOVED Hello Beautiful. I think it is a super underrated book. I’ve never read more realistic characters, ever. I love to see that people are reading it finally!
The Spectacular was in my top 10 books of 2023. Fiona Davis writes historical fictions based on different historical establishments in NYC! 😊

I felt the same way about Hello Beautiful! It was so good and yet at the same time such a complicated reading experience 😅 it’s definitely one I’m glad to have read but I also was very frustrated by the way it was made to seem like the characters choices were good/right. Still such a good read though; it’s so hard to explain!
I have loved a deadly education trilogy, I just finished the second book and need to start the third. so far it's a 5 star book series for me.

Naomi Novik- I really couldn’t get into or like deadly education, but I absolutely loved both Uprooted and Spinning Silver. They give fairytale, romance, magic, very good! Hope you give them a try.

Honestly I will blur people out if I haven’t actually asked them to be on camera if I’m filming even if they’ve been on the channel before. Which can sometimes include just their name
Maybe it is because they were talking and it will be distracting if you see other people talking?

I read the Spectacular earlier this year! I loved the Rockettes storyline & the “following your dreams” and gender norms social commentary. I really enjoyed the romance, even if it wasn’t exactly what I expected. The ending of this book sat with me for a long time. I also enjoyed learning more about NYC history. It’s my understanding that all of Fiona Davis’ books include elements of NYC history :)
