This is hip hop royalty regarding the Bomb Squad, Hank Shocklee, Keith Shocklee, Eric Sadler, the Bomb Squad. This was critical for the formation of PE; but understand this...they were critical in the shaping of the ICE CUBE sound after he left NWA. Ice Cube was basically frozen out of the West Coast studios and help after leaving NWA and he had nowhere to go. Ruthless Records was riding high and he had no one he could trust and nowhere to go to produce his vision. He approached the Bomb Squad through mutual links and the Amerikkka's Most Wanted album was done. This is without a doubt (real hip hop guys know this) his best and most complete album. There was not a single weak track on that album. Every single that came from that album was a hit. This also came at the time that the buzz attracted him to act in Boyz N the Hood. This album gave CUBE his signature sound, a voice to his greater vision and the direction he wanted to go in which was apolitical. We have the Bomb Squad to thank for all of this!
Woah and don't forget about one of the other greatest of albums of all time imo only 2nd to it takes a million - death certificate.. Definitely influenced by the jewels dropped by Chuck D and Professor Griff...Classic Material..
Absolutely 2000% correct! Cube needs to acknowledge this information/facts in every interview he does in regards to his solo career! All due respect to these producers but The Bomb Squad influenced Sir Jinx and DJ Muggs as well, who helped shape Cube's sound( Sir Jinx worked on "Amerikka's Most Wanted ") He's a good producer too!
They have a nice three-part energy going on. They could really start competing with The Breakfast Club, Ebro's show and Sway's Universe if they had better sound and improved their audio and camera editing. But they're improving slowly but surely. I wish they would make real podcast episode so I could listen to this show on Spotify or download it as an mp3 when i'm driving or on the train. RUclips video is the only way I can hear the show
The GodCast be having all the pioneers coming through, I enjoyed this Keith Shocklee interview. It was just too short for me, because I am big Public Enemy fan. #YoBumRushTheShow
When i was a teenager, I could have sworn that I heard Bobby Byrd's " I know you got soul" sampled on damn near every song on " nation of millions" but I never bothered to check the credits but I can hear it. If I'm right thats super innovative. If you cleared the whole song you were able to break it down and make ten!( if that's how sampling works. I don't know) Either way, " nations..." was a work of art!
Great Interview guys! I love this hip hop history session. I was listening and just loving the interview just like you guys! I'm glad you all just let Shocklee tell his story. Bravo! Such a great vibe!
They did 3 albums that if I heard someone say either one was the greatest ever I wouldn't argue with them Amerikkka's Most Wanted It Takes a Nation The Great Adventure of Slick Rick
Love the fact that Keith delves into the background story of Public Enemy, Spectrum and WRYC, which begin in September-October 1976. Actually, I came up with name "Spectrum" when i came across drummer Billy Cobham's album by that title as well as the group Ace Spectrum (which featured Rudy Gay, Sr.)'s first album "Inner Spectrum." Though I didn't work directly with Frankie Crocker, I did work with his fellow DJ's Vy Higginsen, G. Keith Alexander and Ken Webb. When I hooked up with Keith's brother Hank that January, Spectrum evolved from us trying to promote the Youth Center's programs at various parks and venues outside the center. I love Keith's sense of humor and his ability to keep it real, which is reflective of the Roosevelt community vibe in general. Eric Sadler, by the way, was one of the musicians featured in one of the talent shows I gave when I was managing Eddie Murphy and his partner, Mitchell Kyser (before King Broder)! Because I couldn't do everything, I had them host the talent shows, which is what Keith is talking about.
The Bomb Squad were underrated in terms of being mentioned in the upper echelon of hip hop producers. They are hip hop royalty. Much respect ✊🏾 to Keith & Hank Shocklee
You guys just keep on doing what it do... only compete with yourself and no one else... try to top the last thing you did.... don't look at nobody else just compete with yourself!! When we look at others we tend to get confused ...now if there is something to learn okay but just keep watching yourself and always make room for improvement not based on what other people say but based on what inner self say!!!!! Compromise your morals for No One...
T Tha Vizion of 78 when that song came on the only thing I can do is just sit down and listen... heck it became my life when I had to write letters to get my son out of solitary confinement when I had to write pardon letters... "eventually I got a letter from the government the other day"... Chucky used to worry about serious things... people out here worried about somebody not commenting on their Facebook😞
There are also another dozen or so albums they were instrumental in as well. But CUBE's one was huge as they basically crafted him into a solo artist. They even changed his cadence.

Hip hop royalty. Public Enemy truly set the bar
T Monique Chuck D didn't switch his style for anyone I guess when you remain true to yourself that's what makes you a legend
YES THEY DID...
They set the bar, took said bar and threw it as far as they could, and then went in the opposite direction.
