Chuck D needs no introduction. As the lead voice of Public Enemy, he has repeatedly made hip-hop history and possesses one of the best-known voices in the genre.
In this extended lecture at the 2008 Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona, he talked about the making of the seminal album It Takes a Nation of Million to Hold Us Back, his path to fame, the changing nature of the music industry, politics, art, and plenty more.

Because, they are drunk in love on Red Bull. I stopped paying attention to Hip Hop when Public Enemy came out. Because I know that Public Enemy to me is the best thing that ever happened to the Hip Hop game period. I consider myself just like Chuck D. a citizen of the planet. My connection to the group is a personal one. I was discovered years ago from a member of his DJ Crew Spectrum City. My dance crew had a chance to preform with them on a couple of their events. I went on from 1987 traveling when YO BUM RUSH THE SHOW CAME OUT. It was my sound track that year along with Sign O the Times from Prince that year in Europe. So hearing this lecture is a trat for me. I grew up as a teenager watching the genesis of Public Enemy ,the whole WBAU radio show he talked about. Chuck D. was laying the seeds of what he would become today way before Public Enemy. So what he's doing as an advocate for the Hip Hop community and the restitution of Art.

I think sometimes they are just star struck..and sitting their like. Chuck D. is really here. Plus it's a new generation who probably feels they seen it all..You know young people. I worked with Chuck D. and his crew back in the early 80's on a few gigs. They were innovative at the time, and when I heard Chuck D. who was called Chucky D. at the time was awesome back then. His voice is what stood out to me the first time I heard. Powerful. I always wondered the day he would start making records. They did. The rest is history. Oh yeah, I grew up on Long Island as they did..

    Dope interview/conversation! :)
But I totally disagree when he talks about "how come it can't be a hot 13 bars or a hot 15 bars".... I'm a hip-hop head and beat lover since 1982, I used to DJ from 1995 to the early 2000's and now sometimes still do it as a hobby & for the love of it and I also make beats as a hobby & for the love of it... the reason for mentioning that is to point out that I love beats and know how they work and how to work with them AND I think it's wack for hip-hop or Electronic Dance music to have weird patterns that stray away from multiples of 2 or 4 bars, or beats with weird timings other than 4/4.... those weird patterns & timing fucks up the vibe when nodding your head and expecting a change, pause or break and it also fucks up the vibe when you're DJing, mixing, cutting & scratching records.
I hate when a record just decides to throw in an extra bar break or even worst just half a bar while I'm mixing 2 records and it fucks up the whole mix. lol :D

1:18:00 That's like asking "if men only make up about 50% of the population, how come men are 90% of the prison population?"
The fallacy here is looking at the percentage of a demographic, as if prisons are supposed to reflect all demographics equally. No, STUPID. Prison populations represent people committing crimes. If men commit many times more crimes than women, expect many more men than women in prison. Chuck says black people are 12% of the population. It's far worse, Chuck. Most of the violent crimes are committed by young men. You're talking less than 5% of black people committing a vastly disproportionate number of violent crimes. That's why they're overrepresented in prisons. And as long as you're blaming it on human rights violations or white supremacy, it will get worse for black America and society as a whole.
