    My model oven is JBP46GV1WW Part-WB44K5012
    I recently had a major oven problem, which appeared to be a fire coming from the bottom bake element. I discovered that the element cracked and was arcing, like a welder. I shut the oven off and unplugged it to finally get it to stop. It went on for several minutes. I researched how to repair it and made this video to show you how easy it is.

      @@MarkThomasBuilder I heard you say it was $45. I had stopped at a local appliance store and they were in the range of $25-50 (I didn't find out about mine in particular). This video was very helpful. My heating element went out on Thanksgiving day while I was cooking. I had everything cooked except my sweet potato pie. I saw a small orange spark and at the time I didn’t know what was wrong but I turned off my oven and let it cool that way but that didn’t really do much but when I unplugged it that seem to help cool it down faster. I left it unplugged and went to Lowe’s only to be told they didn’t sell them in the stores anymore so I found a place online up in Philadelphia that sold it for around $12. My total cost was $24 and some change which was cheap considering trying to find that part online at other places they were asking $39 and $58. I ordered my part on Saturday and got it Tuesday. Installing it was simple and quick just like in the video and it help that I have the same stove too. It started smoking a lil bit but that was normal. I just put it on 200 and let it warm and after the smoke faded out I was good to go. Thank you for sharing. Much cheaper than calling a repairman and paying an arm and a leg to get it fixed lol.

    I am sooooo glad to have found this video. THANK YOU!!! Mine is in a tight spot so I was contemplating how to get my tiny (adult) niece behind it in the hopes of getting to the wires. Three things I will try/do is 1) turn it off at the fuse box because I am unsure if the outlet is reachable 2) clean it while the bottom element is out/broken and 3) use clothes pins to try to stop any wires from escaping into the cavity from which it came. My oven will be alive again properly in no time. PS...I remember there being extra smoke the day I think it died.

    Avoid using self clean. It pushes the oven to its limits and often results in a service call. The worst result I ever saw from an oven where the customer ran self clean was when the 900°F temperature deformed the bottom of the oven such that the oven door would no longer seat right. The range had to be replaced.... Better to put a pan inside with water and then bring it to a boil for a steam clean...

I've done it for years, today I learned the hard way it's a no no. Well first do a little research to make sure you get an oven heating element that matches your range/oven. the name and model number can usually be found on the lower right hand corner of the door. Either unplug the oven or turn off the power at the circuit breaker. And it is usually easier to access the back of the oven if you first remove the oven door. A lot more information can usually be found by visiting the manufactures website under support.

    Are the GE heater elements a standard size? If not, how do you know which which replacement part to get? Is the model number on the back of the stove?

    • @bethteer1509
      @bethteer1509 3 года назад

      The Model # of your stove should be on back along with other useful info. Or you can put the Make of stove in your search & compare the elements that look like yours. That's what I ended up doing.

  • @oneundecided

    I replaced the burned out heating element and measured the resistance of 19 ohms at the terminals when I connected it, but both heating elements do not work and do not heat up. Apparently, when the heating element was shorted on itself, some element inside the firebox was damaged too, although inside the oven the light works and backlight of the mode switching buttons also functional. I have to figure out now how to remove the oven from the cabinet.

    ok... what he didn't tell you was that the 2 black wires on the left side of the element... that wire has 120 volts constantly to it, no matter if the oven is turn of or not. The yellow wire is 120 volts coming down from the replay and is only energized when you turn the oven on bake or self clean. But... power is always there if the appliance is plugged in on the black wires bottom element.

    • @MarkThomasBuilder

      Thanks for sharing. I recommend unplugging the oven from the wall before doing any work on it. It's a good opportunity to clean all the junk that ends up underneath and behind it.

    Ordered the baking element from Walmart. $13.25 to pick up in store, $20 to ship to the house.. Amazon had it for sale for $19 but that did not include shipping and was going to arrive a few days later than Walmart had guaranteed.

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  5 лет назад

      I bought it locally and think the price was over $40. If you can wait a few days, then having it shipped is the best bet for savings.

  • @lindseysummers5351

    My element just started sparking and then went out. It's likely that my element had a split like yours did and started arcing (I need to look at it again after it cools down completely). Here's hoping that I only need to replace the element and it's not something more serious, like faulty wiring!!

    Awesome vid! When I was hooking my element up, the right hook up wire was short. I had to unscrew the back part of the stove to reach the wire. The wire was going through a silver ring. When I took the wire out of the silver right I was able to connect everything. I tested The stove out and everything is working correctly. For caution reasons Do you think I should go back at try to put the wire back through that silver ring?

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  5 лет назад +2

      It's hard for me to answer that question without seeing the silver ring you're talking about. My advice is to put it back the way the manufacturer installed it.

    This happened tonight at my sister's house. I baked a pizza in her oven. Afterwards, the element starting making a noise, then started on fire. She blamed it on me, but I guess it happens eventually. It's a built-in wall oven that's been in her house since 1991.

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  6 месяцев назад

      Yes, I was surprised when it happened to my oven, but I guess it's more common than what you might think. It's definitely not your fault.
      I'm not sure if the self cleaning ovens wear out faster, but I'm guessing that they do.
