I guess this is another instance of the square-cube law? Probably the strength of the spring goes up with the thickness of the wire, which is the square of the 'scale', but the weight of the springs goes up with volume of the metal, which is the cube of the scale. So as you get bigger, weight grows faster than strength.

Large ‘clock type’ or shutter springs allow for quite a lot of energy to be stored. Due to available material 3mm x 50mm is about as large as they go. 30 revolutions is about maximum, could be geared.

I was thinking that one of those self propelled train cars might be more of the idea to look at. the biggest thing there is making it work without the tracks. wikipedia says it was known as a pump trolley or velocipede. it would seem to me that this idea would be more of what you are looking for, but how well it would work on rough ground or paved roads is beyond me.

You can use compressed air. I imagine if you find kind gas can be liquefied under ambient temp can store even more energy. However, I do not expect you to find better than electric motor and battery. I am sure you can find way to resource them for free ;-) . Or you might salvage broken electric bicycle or scooter. Subject of storing energy is a big one and associated with utilizing solar energy . you can find a lot of literature.

You should look at an antique Victrola record player. They use a spring and a weighted spinning device to keep the spring from unwinding too fast and it allows the turntable to spin at a constant speed of 78 revolutions per minute. Or you could use the spring to pressurized hydrolic fluid and use that to power the vehicle.

    • @WayOutWestx2

Your spring box exploded. Try again (Y/N): _ haha yep theres a lot of power in stored energy. Perhaps wood is not the best for storing all that pent up energy. An alarm clock contains some pretty powerul flat spiral spring and they don't explode to bits once wound.... ;)

@@WayOutWestx2 Not sure,, I was thinking if it was more medium pressure, the tank becomes the car frame as it were..... I watched an old documentary from Bath about compressed air motor powered bikes years ago (useless they were), you get more from a liquid as it is denser. You can get nitrogen bladders for house fresh water system - 2 bars and about 30 liters.....

Now Tim, hear me out, Put the upper bathtub (from the two bathtubs idea) on springs, that way you can vary how you release the energy through the pipe against the energy stored in the springs. By letting the water out slowly you can regulate how fast the car goes! And because it is a bath it can be considered clean transport.

He so I want to do something very similar to this. But my energy needs are far less. I don't need to move a vehicle juat charge batteries. I want the excess energy I get from my solar panels to turn a motor that loads the spring. Maybe if I got a large clock spring?. I'm sure its possible to do.
