DIY KINTSUGI

- What do you do when your project "fails"? Fill it with resin and dust it with gold! When one of our concrete slabs cracked, we used the opportunity to try something which neither of us had done before. Kintsugi is the art of repairing a broken item (mainly pottery) with lacquer and gold dust. While this was not exactly the 'proper' method, it was fun to give something new a try. There was a lot of room for improvement and I'm looking forward to giving it another shot in the future.
Here are the links to the resin ( amzn.to/2nFWw9n ) and gold dust ( amzn.to/2mKc90p ) that I used.
If you're interested in seeing what I'm currently working on, where I'm traveling to, or what I've spilled on myself then you can follow me on instagram @ijessup.
Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the Verse
What I like most of this video over Ben's one is that it actually takes the "Kintsugi" philosophy of aknowled the beauty of "broken" things. It's such a beautiful project by itself, but it's even more beautiful cause you gave life to that crack that many would've thought was a flaw or something that ruined the table. Really amazing project :)
thanks, luis!
Luis Ramírez I was thinking much the same thing. I first learned of Kintsugi while watching a video on Japanese furniture making and fell instantly in like with the premise. Since then, I've found a slew of old, broken things to resuscitate. It's been absolutely joyous to present those things to friends as gifts, explaining the concept in the process.
The gold touch makes it look slightly like marble. Looks good Midas!
I like the veins of gold coursing through the concrete. It gives it a sense of living.
I saw your recent interview, and the comment from the guy who said you weren't even pretty or talented?
NOT PRETTY???????? She is absolutely adorable! Beautiful, goofy, great personality, and beautifully simple designs. If I had room to put them, I'd try to recreate all of her work I've seen so far.
your designs may be simple, but they have their own special charm and just about anyone who wanted to could use your videos as a teaching tool to try to recreate them. Thanks for the heads-up on sprinkling the gold dust on top instead of mixing it in. This will use a lot less gold dust, and you're right, it does look better. Sub'd for sure. Can't wait until I get to see the next one.
Wow Jessie, I didn't know what Kintsugi meant till this video.....thank you. nice touch with the gold flakes.
I really am not excited about working with concrete, mostly because it's bulky heavy and messy, but the end result is very compelling. Every time I see you and/or Ben work with concrete to create something cool it makes me want to overcome my reservations and step out of my comfort zone. This gold vein effect you created running through the damaged slab was genius. Great way to save a project that would have otherwise been a pain to get rid of. Also I really enjoyed listening to your interview on Waylight Creations Podcast. Very interesting back story.
thanks, chad! i totally get what you're saying about concrete. it seems so permanent because of it's heft and, in the event that there is a problem, it really makes a heavy pile of trash :D having said that, it can be a lot of fun. thanks for listening to the podcast! i had a lot of fun with those guys
Great work Jessie! So many would just toss it if it cracked but you make better than it would have been... So good!
Love the build! Looks very eye catching and simple.
Love that tanle. Just moved and was looking for unique dining room tanle. Thanks
Great fix, Jessie👍 It turned out awesome!
you have a beautiful way of demonstration.
you can be a great teacher.
that is such a wonderful compliment! thank you, nader
Love this , you are so talented it’s mind blowing
I've always loved this concept.....Solid work!
Kintsugi - Now I know a fancy word for it. Very cool.
i am here to provide fancy words to the world at large :D
Cool little project!
You saved my life with this idea, my life is concrete
Really nice idea. It reminds me of my second home...
thanks, red :)
Cool table, I think you should have cracked it some more, the gold resin looks great. I do a lot of work with resin and metal powders, you can get some great results. My friend Nick Zammeti suggested I check out your channel. All the best, Jim
thanks, jim!
very nice gold line tabel👌👌👌 your work is GOLD👑
great!
that was an interesting method. I enjoyed learning something new
That really looks cool!
I've been waiting to see this. I saw some teasers on Instagram. It looks great!!
thanks!
I would like to use this method on our concrete floor which has cracked in random areas. How durable is it? Will it hold up to mopping and vacuuming?
Fine work!
This is GOLD I tell ya... GOLD!!! It looks really cool. What type of concrete did you use it looks very white in color? Thanks.
I like this. I wonder if putting the gold in the holes of the concrete would look good too.
thanks, justin! i had contemplated fill the the tiny holes with gold but, in this particular instance, i decided that it would be too busy. having said that, it IS a great idea and something that i want to try in the future
those jeans are getting so good!
Nice! I heard Ben talking about you doing this on the Podcast.
i LOVE that you're listening to his podcast :D
Aw you are so cute, your videos always seem more personal than other channels! xx
Awesome!!!
This table is just like me !!!!
A little on the heavy side, cracked, but pretty in its own way :-)

Love it!

what kind of concrete mix you used to make white color?
interesting!! and nice job too
Super freaking cool
damn, now i want to make a concrete table, crack it only so i can do THIS to it. so much better than without the crack. kintsugi for the win!
Lovely work. What kind of concrete did you use? I don't think there was anything about it
i used quickrete
Thanks jess for usefull video, i have a question is this gold dust safe for food thanks alot.
the one that i used is not food safe
nice result! cheers :)
When you turn a oops into something useful.. how long were the legs?
love it
omg!
never seen anything like this!
that was marvellous, Jess
*_*
what is this King Suit concept? never heard of it.
kisses from Brazil
Jessie, I came here from HomeMadeModern. How do you get a light concrete and what concrete mix did you use? In Canada, I can only get Quikcrete 3000 locally.
heya andy,
i used quikrete 5000 because it's the most readily available here and the least expensive. i'm not a concrete scientist but it is my understanding that the number relates to the psi. i don't think it should matter what kind you use
Looks nice :-)
UGGG! need more IJESSUP, all out of videos, going into withdrawal...................
Bell clicked, send notice clicked, Save clicked, now all I gotta do is WAIT?
This is a great technique. The other term for Kintsugi that I've heard is Wabi Sabi.
thanks, phil! as i understand it, kintsugi refers to the lacquer/gold repair while wabi sabi is a more broad term for finding the beauty in the imperfect. kinda describes all of us, don't you think? :)
ijessup totally!
Pittsburg dad music! 😂
Great little project Jessie, Charlie and I have been inspired by this one and will be doing a similar project with an old wooden table we found are we are going to refurb it. hope you can check out our chanels soon. All the best Nick
can't wait to see it!
thanks Jessie
The Man in the High Castle inspired or is this from your Japanese heritage?
no on both counts but now you've got me curious... is kintsugi prominent in The Man in the High Castle?
ijessup Kintsugi is actually the name of an episode in season 2. It is a fantastic episode.
good to know, thanks!
