You're very fortunate to have such a great mechanic that will walk you through the issues. I have one as well (Yuri Rojas at The Garaj in Dayton) and they are worth every penny for their expertise and service.
This is a really useful video. How many guys after losing their brake lights and blowing a fuse would think they had a much bigger problem? This illustrates the KISS principal in action...keep it simple, stupid! Thanks for the great videos, Will!
Hi Will; take a look at Classic Retrofit. They have the best fuse box upgrade out there IMO. I did it in my 1989 930 and haven’t had any problems. Each circuit has a led light that lights if blown. I did the installation and took me a couple of hours. It’s not difficult at all !! Great video 👍
Thanks. This video is a little dry compared to others but the purpose of the channel is to spread air cooled knowledge so it falls squarely into that category 👍🏼
I was actually super surprised to see a late 80s Porsche still use these types of fueses! To my knowledge other manufactureres started using blade fuses way earlier.
Great video. Thanks. I love watching masters at their work and learning their tricks. I will do the same to my 82 SC this week! From Bob (wife’s account). And yes, I love the 915 once you get used to it!
Another great video. This is a subject that I've never seen covered before. Good thing to do prevent a problem from happening. Looking forward to the videos on your 'new' '92!
The 964 threw me a BIG curveball yesterday during the post-purchase inspection. NOT good. Will make for some interesting videos and there are some valuable lessons about buying air cooled Porsches that I will share. The car is/will be great, but major setback. Stay tuned!
Which end did he start with #1 or # 21??? I had a 73 Mercedes 450 SLC and I cant tell you how many times I thought I had a major wiring issue, and turned out to be a blown or poorly contacted fuse. So Always start with the fuse box when something on one of these "Classic" cars stops working:) Great tutorial not dry Quite and helpful. Well Done and Thanks Mike
I have some weird stuff going on with my headlights… my high beams are stuck on… hoping it’s the fuses instead of the switch in the steering wheel! My fuses have for sure obvious corrosion and even a few fuses that I think are in the wrong spot. I wonder if adding a little die electric grease to the fuse contacts would help prevent future corrosion? Or would that just attract more problems?
you probably dont care but if you are stoned like me atm you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. I've been watching with my gf these days =)
My Running buddy has an 88 911 and he has had a few issues with lighting. We plan on replicating this cleaning process and fuse replacement. So thank you for posting this. Can you tell me Which end is # 1 fuse and which end is # 21 ?? Thanks Mike
I *think* the far right looking down over top of it from the driver’s side is #1. I believe Charles touches on it in the video though? Be sure to do your research on that though.
Not sure I’d use brake cleaner on such thin copper parts as the fuse clips; I think potentiometer (pot) washer would be better. I’d also suggest a brass bristle brush, it’s more gentle on the surface of the contacts.
Why would you recommend a nonconductive grease rather than a conductive grease? That makes zero sense. Also, the area is tightly covered so it should not need any grease at all.
Man…I remember the Rennthusiast. Back when he made videos, he used to have the best Porsche channel on RUclips…. ;-). Jk, hope all is well man. Miss the content!
Haha yes, I have taken a short break. I have some 964 videos already shot and will hopefully publish next week. The weather has been too nice to edit! Been out driving and hanging out at the lake house. Thanks for the support 🙏🏽
Have not used one of these yet but its on the project list. www.classicretrofit.com/collections/blade-fuse-panels/products/911-front-fuse-panel-1974-1989
Charles and his business partern are awesome, they fine tuned my 911sc very very well and they are honest !!!
My 1987 911 cab has been converted to blade fuses. So much better system for today’s world and less worry.

Thank you so much for sharing this walkthrough...super clear. So clear I did it tonight!

Me too. My ‘90 964 has blade fuses.

Great episode, Will! I love it when I learn new and simple hacks to keep my Porsches running well.

Upgrading those might be good collaboration content 😉
Thanks! Nice tutorial for those of us with minimal mechanical skills!
Yes, not the usual type of video but perhaps useful for someone nonetheless.

Charles seems a gread charakter!
Hey Will, where did you get the luggage/frunk cover. I have an ‘83 and it’s not nearly as nice. Thanks for the video!

I need an air cooled car soon. Maybe in Q4!

@Jonah Travis Yea, I've been watching on InstaFlixxer for since december myself :D

i stopped fighting with mine and just replaced both fuse panels with the ones from classicretrofit
You have the aux relays for the headlights, I don't see the battery tap fused.
You should also use a light coat of dielectric grease on those connections.
Why would you recommend a nonconductive grease rather than a conductive grease? That makes zero sense. Also, the area is tightly covered so it should not need any grease at all.
@@bigmacdaddy1234 Yea, bad advice. Don't use anything.

@@Rennthusiast we’ll be here when you return. Enjoy the fruits of your labor, my friend. :-)
Hey Will, what size wheels are you using on the 86?
17”
@@Rennthusiast What brand are they?
you need a nice 928 S4 and 944 turbo in your collection as well ... u are missing out big time.
