Farl is a brown bread made with baking soda as its leavening. Slightly bitter and crumbly in texture, lovely smeared with salted butter. There's also potato farl which is mashed potato mixed with flour and seasoning, cooked thinly on a skillet. Crumpets (what she originally thought were english muffins) are made from a yeast batter, thickly poured into a metal ring and cooked on a skillet, usually grilled and served with butter and toppings although I also like them fried in bacon fat at breakfast.

My comment was meant to convey that I found out the original pancake and it comes from England versus maybe Germany or France. In America there is an endless amount of possible origins for things we have. I was trying to piece to together in my travels.

As a country of immigrants, the US have adopted and adapted the Rest of the World's cuisine. It's the American arrogance about this point that is so off-putting. Where do you think your food originates from - apple pie, muffins, pancakes, buns, biscuits, scones etc etc - you did not invent them! Apple pie is an English creation dating back to 1390 - though some would argue that the Dutch got there first. I see from your bio that you are rightly proud of your Thai heritage - try going to Thailand and telling the Thai people that their Pad Thai is like something you can find in the USA! It's about respecting the direction of travel - Rest of the World goes to America, not the other way around.
Don't worry yourself too much over any negative comments you may get over this video . . . Yes, it's true that items are usually well placed and look neat by the stackers after it closes. However, go in any supermarket, no matter which one late evening or at night before closing, and you'll find things that were picked up earlier ending up elsewhere in the store when they change their minds to something else instead . . . I've seen a tub of strawberries (or other non-frozen items) just left in freezers - and kids toys or fridge items in with some fruit and veg. Sweets though (candies), you can find left in a lot of places, too. As kids may pick anything up, open it to try them, and then dump it if they don't like it. Whereas if the mother, father, parents, or whoever is with them see it, instead of buying what they've opened, will stick it up on a high shelf just to hide it to save paying for it . . . As for any cakes, buns, loaves/bread, etc - Americans don't usually like them while in Europe as they're usually not sweet enough taste-wise for them - (But, are far healthier though!) - typically because we either use a sugar type substitute if required, or none.in them. Cakes and buns can be different though because of any kind of icing used on them, which makes them taste quite sweet, to us anyway . . . Fyi…they were disheveled before I got there. Were like that when I got there. The packages arent perfect squares/they are soft and the plastic slides a lot so they naturally don’t stay perfect.

M&S are the 'Top-End' of retailers, classy but very expensive lol. I learned something from your video, so thank you. As a 70 ish English woman I had to look up what a Farl was!! I'm glad you like the produce. Did you get to taste anything? Some of those baked goods need to be toasted or heat up to appreciate. I saw an American trying to eat an untoasted crumpet once. This item is mainly a conduit for getting melted butter into your mouth and really don't do the job untoasted. Personally, I would toast hot cross buns, tea cakes and welsh cakes as well. Probably that farl as well, I would slice it across ways and toast. They look too cloggy otherwise.

London is fun for tourists, but it doesn't reflect the real UK. If you want to see the beautiful parts of the UK, you need to go to Yorkshire, or the Cotswolds, or Dorset etc.
Marks & Spencers is one of the most expensive major supermarkets, with only Waitrose more expensive. I lived and worked in the USA in the 2000s. US supermarkets were much cheaper than the UK, even Whole Foods Market. were cheaper. Marks & Spencers are unusual because almost everything is their own brand. Typical UK supermarkets sell fewer own brands. Marks & Spencers also pioneered food and clothing. They were responsible for the concept of 'chilled ready-to-cook meals', and perfecting the essential 'cold chain'. IIRC, they were the first UK supermarket with part-baked continental breads like ciabatta. They even perfected 'non-iron' cotton shirts in-house. If you ever return, maybe pick a couple of things and try them? It seems weird watching someone find half a dozen novel, ready-to-eat 'baked goods' and not try anything. Crumpets _must_ be toasted, and I always toast English Muffins, also I'd toast farl, Welsh cakes, and pancakes to warm them up. I'd eat fresh hot-cross-buns, tea-cakes, and spiced fruit buns cold. A couple of days later, I'd toast them. I'm fond of fresh spiced & fruited breads/buns with cheese, but that might be unusual. Anything with icing are eaten cold. If you stay in Airbnb you'd have no problems toasting things. If you're in a hotel with 'public toasters' you might ask if you could try toasting 'unfamiliar UK baked goods' before buying anything. It's a bit of a shame you didn't tack on a few seconds saying you'll go back and straighten the shelves because it was awkward to handle the packets and record video. That might have endeared you to viewers. American's don't have a great reputation in the UK, or much of Europe. So sadly, you maybe were too readily misjudged. You might even consider shooting something saying that's what you did (against a neutral room background) and adding it to the end of this video to reduce negative comments, and save yourself time, effort and stress, responding to negativity. I skimmed your channel, and you have Thai food connections. I've only visited about a dozen countries (USA [about 17 states], Canada, The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, France, Estonia, Gibraltar, Belgium, Norway, India, Thailand, Australia, South Africa, Singapore). I was fortunate to visit Thailand most months for more than a year. In my limited experience, Thai food is the best in the world. My simile is "like going from black & white to colour". I have just stopped the video at3.30 when you were looking at the Soda farls, they are very much an Northern Ireland thing, I spent 40 years working in a bakery making them. To have the proper Soda Farl experience, get your Soda Farl, slice it in two, put a fried egg on one of the halves, two slices of fried bacon and some HP sauce, Put the two halves together and eat along with a cup of proper Tea, life does not not get any better than that. That will set you for a few hours work on a building site but no bloddy baked beans.

I think I was mostly just curious and wondering what these baked goods taste like. We don’t have them in USA. In terms of the way i handled the goods I was actually gentle but it looked sloppy because I only had one hand and couldnt organize the other goods on the shelf to make it properly straight and the packages were slippery plastic. I went back after filming to straighten it out. Eat Travel Love, Joy. Its a food and travel channel. Exploring things I haven’t seen in other countries. ❤
I was making a video for people in other countries who also don’t know what these foods are so we can all look them up or learn about them from British people. I wasn’t going to buy ALL of the baked goods when I couldnt possibly eat all of it. I didnt crush them or open them. I just looked and then after filming reorganized it.

Do you not think it would have been better to inform yourself on these products before making this video? A number of them are traditional bakery products that originated hundreds of years ago. Marks & Spencers is one of the most expensive major supermarkets, with only Waitrose more expensive. I lived and worked in the USA in the 2000s. US supermarkets were much cheaper than the UK, even Whole Foods Market. were cheaper. Marks & Spencers are unusual because almost everything is their own brand. Typical UK supermarkets sell fewer own brands. Marks & Spencers also pioneered food and clothing. They were responsible for the concept of 'chilled ready-to-cook meals', and perfecting the essential 'cold chain'. IIRC, they were the first UK supermarket with part-baked continental breads like ciabatta. They even perfected 'non-iron' cotton shirts in-house.
If you ever return, maybe pick a couple of things and try them? It seems weird watching someone find half a dozen novel, ready-to-eat 'baked goods' and not try anything. Crumpets _must_ be toasted, and I always toast English Muffins, also I'd toast farl, Welsh cakes, and pancakes to warm them up. I'd eat fresh hot-cross-buns, tea-cakes, and spiced fruit buns cold. A couple of days later, I'd toast them. I'm fond of fresh spiced & fruited breads/buns with cheese, but that might be unusual. Anything with icing are eaten cold. If you stay in Airbnb you'd have no problems toasting things. If you're in a hotel with 'public toasters' you might ask if you could try toasting 'unfamiliar UK baked goods' before buying anything.
It's a bit of a shame you didn't tack on a few seconds saying you'll go back and straighten the shelves because it was awkward to handle the packets and record video. That might have endeared you to viewers. American's don't have a great reputation in the UK, or much of Europe. So sadly, you maybe were too readily misjudged. You might even consider shooting something saying that's what you did (against a neutral room background) and adding it to the end of this video to reduce negative comments, and save yourself time, effort and stress, responding to negativity.
I skimmed your channel, and you have Thai food connections. I've only visited about a dozen countries (USA [about 17 states], Canada, The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, France, Estonia, Gibraltar, Belgium, Norway, India, Thailand, Australia, South Africa, Singapore). I was fortunate to visit Thailand most months for more than a year. In my limited experience, Thai food is the best in the world. My simile is "like going from black & white to colour". You're lucky having such a glorious food heritage.

I have just stopped the video at3.30 when you were looking at the Soda farls, they are very much an Northern Ireland thing, I spent 40 years working in a bakery making them. To have the proper Soda Farl experience, get your Soda Farl, slice it in two, put a fried egg on one of the halves, two slices of fried bacon and some HP sauce, Put the two halves together and eat along with a cup of proper Tea, life does not not get any better than that. That will set you for a few hours work on a building site but no bloddy baked beans.

I think I was mostly just curious and wondering what these baked goods taste like. We don’t have them in USA. In terms of the way i handled the goods I was actually gentle but it looked sloppy because I only had one hand and couldnt organize the other goods on the shelf to make it properly straight and the packages were slippery plastic. I went back after filming to straighten it out. Eat Travel Love, Joy. Its a food and travel channel. Exploring things I haven’t seen in other countries. ❤
I was making a video for people in other countries who also don’t know what these foods are so we can all look them up or learn about them from British people. I wasn’t going to buy ALL of the baked goods when I couldnt possibly eat all of it. I didnt crush them or open them. I just looked and then after filming reorganized it.

Do you not think it would have been better to inform yourself on these products before making this video? A number of them are traditional bakery products that originated hundreds of years ago. Like our muffins, which I can tell you bear absolutely no relation to the ghastlyThomas's offerings so named in the U.S.
People need to chill out in the comments..there was a lot to take in so moving between product was a bit fast..don't worry M&S employs enough staff to tidy them up..😂 M&S source every thing themselves pick the best of Scotland, England Wales and Ireland gets them shipped all over the country under the M&S brand..it was soda bread you picked up which is an Irish form of bread were soda is used as the raising agent and a hot plate the cooking source rather than an oven..a hope this helped and that you enjoyed your trip.🌹
