Awesome author. Awesome interview. Bone Setter's Daughter was my first Amy Tan book. I have been captivated ever since then.

I love Amy's stories of her mother…they are always funny. At first, I thought her mother seemed controlling & needy. But the more Amy fleshes her character out, I now understand her mother never wanted to stop being a mother. She always wanted to be there for her, looking out for her. Maybe she wanted to be of value or to feel included, so she would not be forgotten by her daughter. I thought the fish market story was funny, "You were worried about me!" She was happy to know that her daughter cared for her. Amy noted that they had a love/hate relationship, but I can tell her mother had a place in her heart.
