Your form looks very good to me. Personally, I'm all about feel and making adjustments that seem to work for me individually. I've almost played 2 years now with my brother and I used to hate my form because my reach back was a high (Matty O) style of pull. When I tried to changed it I couldn't hit any lines for the next 8 months. Now I don't really care as much. I would say on a scale from Colten Montgomery to Matty O i'm at a Corey Ellis style. For a reference I throw 475-500 ft.
@@seekrdiscgolf Yeah Colten does have good form it's just the low pull that I was referencing. I used to film myself when I was trying to fix the many flaws in my form. I still have a couple of videos but now it's mainly feeling out what works. I don't think I will ever have a lower pull because I couldn't hit my lines at all when I was trying to pull lower. I think for me it's a matter of seeing what is comfortable for my body type. Anyway great video!
Dude I have to admit I"ve gotten to enjoying reviewing my form. Started over from scratch after 2 years of sucking with the robot drill, the progressed to one-step. It's still not pretty (I'm modeling after Ezra, similar body type but not 1% bodyfat like him), but it's really coming along. Snapping for the first time.
So, I’ve noticed something that will help get more distance at least for me. Part of the reason on how I can throw farther is the run up instead of just the X- Step. I wasn’t able to throw 400 before I did the run up but now with the run up I feel like I can still get even more distance than 400 if I try to get the nose angle correct
Regarding rounding, it isn't really an issue if the disc comes behind your body. Catrina Allen does that all the time and she's currently at that top-most tier of female throwers on the planet. The issue with rounding is if the angle of the upper arm to chest is less than 90 degrees. That promotes shoulder issues and also harms the efficiency of the throw. This is my biggest issue, personally. Regarding the disc coming up during the backswing, I also have this problem, but it's more pronounced. The disc basically comes up to almost neck height.
Blows my mind how far you step to the left front of the Tee Box and foot is nice and closed. I can't wait until I can send my video so yo can see how open my front foot is at plant. Quick question: Do you ever think about rotating your back shoulder(left) on reach back in order to get good shoulder turn? I turn back, but I think not enough. thanks
at the 9:00 mark you talk about your hips, consider looking side by side of you and drew at the point where left foot is down and right foot is about to step for the brace. your left foot and hip angle more turned than Drew's, your hip angle will cause intermittent rounding... food for thought
Your form looks excellent. If you forced me to nitpick, I would say you could take a longer final step with your right foot (see Paul Mcbeth, he reaches as far as he possibly can), and your brace leg is bleeding a little energy because it's not straight and fully flexed (see Eagle McMahan). But honestly, I recommend using a radar gun to get to the next level. I still look at the pro's forms to learn, but I've got the biggest distance gains by practicing with a radar gun and noting what changes I make actually increase the speed of the disc, and I got the biggest gains by fine tuning my grip. Basically the radar gun is teaching me things you'll never see in a form review. I've added 50ft+ in a month to my BH and FH using a radar gun.
Sabre, can you please share some grip tips? I tried to use power grip, fork grip, modified power grip, two finger grips, etc. I can't seem to settle on which one works best for driving. It varies from day to day.
@@mmarch1361 I'm not a professional, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt. 1) Your form is how you generate gross power. 2) Your grip is how you transfer that power to the disc. A lot of people are focused on their form, but if you generate 100 units of power in your technique, but transfer only 50 of them to the disc via your grip, you will gain a lot more by improving your grip than improving your form. 3) The stronger your grip the better. For BH and max power, I use all four finger pads on the inside of the rim, deep on the rim so they're pressed against the flight plate. I lose 10%+ speed with any weaker grip even if it doesn't feel weaker. 4) The release is just as important as the grip. The release is passive. The disc rim and your grip need to be on your throw plane. The disc will rip out of your grip (listen to any Drew Gibson throw) because as the disc comes out of the power pocket, your wrist lags behind, and then whips forward ripping your pinky, ring, middle, and then index finger off the disc in that order. I believe this last "wrist whip" of the throw is the most important part of the throw. It needs to happen cleanly on your throw plane so you get a clean disc rip out. If the disc comes out early, you'll lose a lot of power. If the disc comes out late, you didn't execute the "wrist whip" correctly. Everything you do with your body and form is to generate the fastest possible wrist whip just prior to release. If you are serious, you need to practice with a radar gun. What a radar gun says about your disc speed is more important than what anyone on the internet says about your form.
@@sabrewolf479 I think maybe my middle finger is too long, when I power grip with 4 fingers, sometimes I feel like the middle finger is going to rip clean off. From what I understand the disc should pivot off the index finger (rip point) last, with the thumb pushing down. I usually feel the rip on the middle finger, so I dont think my index is doing anything really. If I do a birdie grip, and extend middle finger toward center of flight plate, it solves the issue but I feel like I lose a bit of power.
@@mmarch1361 yeah, everyone’s body is different. That’s why I think you should get a radar gun and experiment. My arm doesn’t straighten all the way, and I broke my wrist in a motorcycle accident so my wrist range of motion and angle is different. My “ideal form” is going to be different than anyone else’s, and I think the radar gun is the only way to find what is ideal for me.
Couple questions for you on your breakdown. The plane change (side view) appears to be from the elbow bending into the power pocket, and because you throw natural hyzer, this raises the disc level. I would think this is not a problem except that if you watch your disc there is a slight change in the angle to then match the plane you intend to throw on. Is the intent to keep the angle of the disc from full extension through release matched with your throw angle? Also, watching Cole Redalen’s throws, he seems to round as well. Is that because he has his timing down so well that he gets extra power from that slight rounding? (This is something similar to javelin throwers who do a slight wrap move and pull against their body)
First point. Love your explanations. Yes, is my intent to keep it the same from extension to release. Yeah, Cole seems to round. The angle makes it seem more dramatic than it probably is. I’m not against his throw, but less rounding would be great. Sometimes full power shots end up that way.
Raise your elbow up slightly as your plant foot commits this seems to allow you that little bit of room needed so that the disc begins to return back Into that power pocket tucked in position right before it is slings out and away from your chest area. In summary your elbow is dropped causing that disc angle your referencing too.
Thanks for sharing your form breakdown! Re the bad parts: I highly recommend checking out the recent video by Overthrow DG with Christine Jennings. There they clear up some misconceptions on what line the disc should take during the throw with some detailed breakdown of Drew's form.
Hey man! Your form looks great. I hope to get to where you are soon. I noticed two things in you're video. 1. You mention your disc does not travel on a flat line from reach back to release and think that is a bad thing. Ezra aderhold may disagree. Watch this video because Ezra does the same thing. ruclips.net/video/l_ajpOY3Ohs/видео.html 2. One thing I noticed about your form, that I'm also working on right now, is that your right shoulder is too high when in the power pocket. Your arm makes 90 deg but your shoulders are leaned away and are not flat relative to the ground. Looks like you're shrugging a little in the right shoulder. If you take a look at the pros when in the power pocket they usually make a perfect box. Go check it out. Again your form is awesome and I wish my form was as good as yours. I just need more slow dedicated practice
