North Evia | The mines that became alpine lakes
A hidden alpine landscape is located in the heart of Northern Evia and is waiting to be explored just two hours from Athens.
Where for decades the area resembled a lunar landscape with the giant "craters" from the extraction of white stone from the Skalistiri complex, today nature is growing. Not only has she healed her wounds, but she has created a real "painting" of 12 lakes.
Most lakes are about 80 meters deep. At this depth the mining process stopped as the underground aquifer appeared. Over the years, groundwater has created a welcoming ecosystem. Wild reeds, oleanders, pines and plane trees compose the landscape. Many amphibian reptiles, birds, turtles and fish from the broods thrown by the inhabitants now live in the waters.
If you like to explore hidden paradises and enjoy unique natural landscapes, then all you have to do is dare a trip to the heart of Evia.
