- A huge piece of land in Northern Evia has been irreparably affected by the fire disaster in August 2021. A month later the images really cause shock, sadness and anger. Now the residents have to face heavy rainfall, floods, landslides and rock falls. The tragedy is not ending.

Following is an excerpt from an interview with the president of the Panhellenic Federation of Foresters at 2020mag.gr
"After how many years you will learn that fires are not extinguished on asphalt and by air. When will they finally learn that forests are dense and inaccessible. When will they finally learn that all the forests in the world have natural material turning into fuel for fires and are not parks and When will they finally learn to disperse cars well for quick intervention and in places that have visibility in the woods and not wait for the fire to be announced by citizens or volunteers. When will they finally get on a dirt road and hit the fire? When will all the unrelated people finally stop coordinating the fire because they happened to have an institutional role with the specialty of Lawyer, Economist, Doctor, Businessman, etc. When the fire for ten days goes unstoppable from the Evian golf to the Aegean. "Then all sorts of contractors rub their hands for good housekeeping and corrupted people to tear the logs, reforestation, etc."
In the current management of the crisis, did the evacuation of settlements help or not?
"There is no one-word answer to this, it is not yes or no. I will explain why. If you have an urban environment where people are unaware of fires, you probably need to evacuate there to avoid casualties. But you do not evacuate in Rodopoli, which you have turned off around. There is no reason, you do not evacuate in Grammatiko, which is five kilometers in a straight line of fire. Of course, you do not evacuate Northern Evia, where you have resin collectors who work in the forests, lumberjacks, farmers, shepherds, people who know the forest from the outside. There you have them "first hand", they are people who know how the forest behaves. You are not expelling this world. You definitely ask the weak and the women to leave with the children and you keep those who will support your work. The evacuation needs study ".
Do you think that no study was done and they evacuated en masse?
"The chiefs of the Fire Brigade, in their effort, fearing that one of them would burn, said" better evacuation. "It does not matter, let property and forests be burned."
Let's take the case of northern Evia - are we talking about an incredible destruction not only of forests and property and animals, but also of the destruction of 40 thousand families that lived from the forests?

We heard that they will put special trees that do not burn. What do special trees mean?
"I do not know what it means, but they are making a big mistake. Each area has what nature already holds there by itself. If you go to Penteli to plant oaks, logs, firs, it will not become a forest. Just the same pine will grow, you will have to pay workers every year to remove the pine and in 50 years you will have a forest. "But if you leave it alone, in 25 years you will have a pine forest."
If individuals come to Evia, what could this mean for the forest and for the work of the people?
"Destruction. For this they should listen to the expert foresters. I hope they listen to them. I will give you an example. Mr. Hardalias in June gave money to contractors to make fire zones around settlements, under the supervision of the service. So what did the contractors do? When they tried it, they cleaned from 20 meters to 50 meters. Whatever hindered them and was easy, they cleaned it. Then they went, cleaned plots of people, acquaintances and friends, taking pocket money, and the Forest Service had no jurisdiction to point out and say "here we have to clean, this is what we have to do". It was not even present. "

Θλίβομαι πονάω μέσα στην ψυχή μου Εύβοια μου αγαπημένη!!! Είναι ο άντρας μου από Βόρεια Εύβοια κάθε χρόνο είμαστε εκεί έκλαιγα όταν άφηνα πίσω μου αυτόν τον πανέμορφο τόπο!!!!! Τώρα εύχομαι να μην πετύχει το σχέδιο αυτών που φρόντισαν γι' αυτη την καταστροφή.
Όλοι οι ντοπιοι γνωρίζουν ότι το νησί αφέθηκε να καεί σκόπιμα. Έγκλημα. Ευτυχώς ολόκληρη η Ελλάδα και πολλοι άνθρωποι απο ξενες χώρες συμπαρασταθηκαν στην Εύβοια και η κοινή γνώμη δεν θα επιτρέψει αμεσα ή ευθεως να γίνει στην περιοχή οτιδήποτε αλλο εκτός απο δάσος
τουλάχιστον να αφήσουν την φύση να ξαναγεννηθεί ... ίσως σε λίγα χρόνια.. αλλά να την προσέχουν με νύχια και με δόντια να μην πέσει πάλι θύμα των επιτήδειων ..
Μεγάλη θλίψη και θυμό προκαλούν αυτές οι εικόνες.
Ολοι μας στην Ελληνική επικράτεια καταλαβαμε με θλιψη και οργή οτι η Εύβοια αφέθηκε στο ελεος της φωτιάς. Η προσφατη ανακοινωση για δημιουργία σωματος δασοκομαντο επιβεβαιωνει τις σκέψεις αυτές και μεγαλώνει την αγανάκτηση. Ελπιζω η φυση να κανει γρηγορα το θεάρεστο εργο της

When I was watching your video, I realized that there are many wounds that cannot be seen and that will be much harder to heal, those in the souls of those who have lost everything. I hope they find the strength to start over.👍
Thank you very much my friend for your thoughts and compassion. Greek people feel grateful for the help and support we received from Romania. The case of Evia wildfires hurts a lot. It was something that could be prevented and the fire to burn only a small portion of land. The state mechanism was absent at first and then was not effective. I do hope that the wisdom of nature will manage to recover most of the wounds. As for the locals... Time will tell.

Εκεί νερό, εδώ φωτιά 😞.. Still can't believe what happened there. We've been in Evia 4 years ago and we went almost through hole island. I remember how much firefighters and firetrucks like small fire bases we've seen among those pine trees, so how is possible something like this to happen?!
At the same time there was a big fire near the capital. So Evia was abandoned until the fire reached the sea. Tragic failure of the Greek state leadership

I remember that in that time there was a strong wind but it was really confusing why they don't react on time, now I know the reason..
