  • What would you do if you were sailing and you found an abandoned yacht drifting in the middle of nowhere? In this film, one of our crew boards an abandoned yacht that they found drifting.
They were on a yacht delivery from Greece to the Netherlands. They wanted to check if anyone was onboard and to see if they could help.

The same happened to us off the south coast of Italy as we were on passage to Sicily. The yacht was going round in circles, it appeared to have the engine running but no sails up. We did not board but tried to raise anyone aboard with our fog horn. Informed Italian Coast Guard who came out to us and then on to the abandoned yacht. Don't know the outcome but felt we did all we could.

What happened - did you attempt to salvage her?
If I'm not mistaken that is a Westerly 33 from the late 1970s. Greek registered going by the flag. A fine seaworthy design. Sad to see her like this. Looks like the person on board had to be airlifted out, possibly a destitute liveaboard or even a vagrant, unfortunately. I've seen one like this in a yard in Kalamata.

Seen the one in Kalamata. Shredded sails and very damaged. This one could have been used to transport illegal immigrants? Then ditched.

@lorenzoward946 Yeah, this was a couple of years ago. I recall shaking my head at the marks from the twin keels where the yard dragged her carelessly across the concrete and I saw some visible hull damage too. But its probably not the same yacht. Sadly you are likely right about the people trafficking angle. Would be interesting to know exactly where the yacht in the video was encountered. The name of the yacht is "She" according to the video? Nothing of that name in the westerly owners association yearbook, though hardly surprising.
A previous owner judging by the sticker at 0:53 may have been Turkish, the sticker says something about being a member of "Zipkin Paplasim" spearfishing group in Turkish.

Turkish then Greek--> illegal immigrants. There was a fellow years ago, hard up in Turkey with a Bavaria. He did the deed, only 10 NM to the nearest Greek island. It was rumoured he took 40 on board. At a $1,000 a head it would pay back quickly.

The date spray painted is from a coast guarrd or authority signifying the boat is abandoned witth no one aboard!?

Yes, that is what it is so that no one else feels they have to board her.

A boat should always have someone on deck. An adandoned boat will have poorly set or damaged sails. There is rarely sufficient crew to man a derelict. I'd radio the coastguard of the relevant country, in case something was amiss. If the distance to nearest port is short one can attempt salvage. i've never attempted towing under sail. Checking that no one is in need of assistance is the first prioity.

What happens if you find an abandoned yacht? Can you claim it?

Potentially, however salvage law is not completely straightforward.

Weird. The condition looks like a drug addict lived on it. Maybe it broke free from a mooring someplace and they couldn't sail it.

Could be, though there is a lot of dried food packets etc lying around and hardly any liveaboard gear, even the oven is missing. Used to traffic people and then ditched is more likely.

Suspicion: boat used to transport illegal immigrants. Then abandoned with crew in a dinghy ashore?

Makes sense. Sad to see good boats being used for such purposes or being trashed by penniless "liveaboards" who turn them into rubbish tips. A lot of those hanging around Greece.
